I just got one of these rifles, m28/76, and I want to know how you suggest that I slug the barrel? You mention that you shot bullets that measured .311. My rifle has a built date on the barrel of 1968. I tried to cycle some Prvi Partizan 7.62x54R with 150 gr. soft point boat tails and 2 of the bullets stuck in the chamber when I extracted the round from the gun spilling powder into the action. I have shot said rounds at deer with excellent results from a M39 that I built up like yours.
Cool, looks abit like the Valmet made 7.62 Tkiv 85 which was a M-Nagant based Sniper rifle made for the finnish defence forces, that was designed in the late eighties like the name would suggest. Although it was quite short lived, since it's being phased out by the .338 Sako Trg42.
Thanks for posting and sharing your Fin M28/76 and your custom Mosin Nagant Sporter. You have obviously proved that if you put your mind to it and do your homework you can get an accurize any Mosin Nagant vs a simple standard rifle. I really enjoy your videos and that you show the progress of your work and the end results.
Based on this video of Yours (this very one here), could it be You have a tendency to lean yourself (along with the stock) a bit on the right side.
I'm not saying at all it's bad, on the contrary. However, when facing a success by a shot (I guess You know what I mean here), how about keeping it even more cool, along with keeping the rifle and scope more vertical.
Plz post the vids of the surplus round at the 700-1000yrds that and which rounds u use would be awesome they both look like fun to shot, I'm looking into buying the m28-76...I can only find them at centerfiresytems(dot)com, where did you get yours? and was how the quality of the rifle? because I'm scared to invest the money into one that I cant inspect with my own hands and eyes. Thanks!
@EazyaccessMETV 91/30 90 dollars (normally bad condition ones are terrible like maybe 3 to moa on a good day 1.5 or 2 this is a marksmans rifle it's going to be under 1.5
love my 1967 Finnish m-39 great shooter with iron sights. Also love my mosin 91/30, getting ready to drill and tap it for a scope since they are a dime a dozen. The M-39 will stay just like it is, excellent condition. Heck mine has prob almost tripled in value.
@kingVillien Actually they are slightly different. 7.62x54 uses .310-.311 bullets, where as 7.62x53 uses .308 bullets. The cases are exactly the same though.
@No1118117 The two catridges are almost the same, but technically, yes. The brass I am using is marked "7.62x53r" but working in any mosin. No issues at all. It's funny because Midway still sells it as "7.62x54r" although it is marked as 53r.
Cool great shooting with both. Question does the Gun and pawn you work at do gunsmithing? For I'm looking for a smith here state side to do a barrel change any recommendations?
@Iraqveteran8888 Would that include putting a new barrel on a Mosin? The reason I asked is you considered it on the sporter conversion of yours, but obviously it doesn't look like it needs it. On mine I want to start of with a clean slate. Many smiths say no because their afraid of the unknown, I'd like to have the same barrel profile and sites remounted to have it look original, but shoot very well.
@TheRifleman336 If you want to rebarrel your Mosin with something liek an offering from Lothar Walther, it can be done, but reusing the original sights may be a little more tricky than meets the eye. It can be done, but I'd have to have a close look at the barrel and receiver. Also, with rebarreling with a surplus barrel, there is the issue of the extractor cut timing correctly. Unfortunately, there is no way to know without physically swapping the barrel.
By the way Eric, i love all your videos, but it's the milsurp stuff has a special place in my heart. I would love to see a shootout amongst the ww2 primary rifles of each country. Even a table-top comparison would be really fun to watch. Thanks for all your work keeping us better educated (and entertained)!
@antiacus I've been planning that for sometime, but I want to do it right, so stay tuned....Have some cool little projects planned. More gunsmithing videos, reloading, and range tests. At some point, many of these rifles that you have seen me work up loads for at 100 yards, will be taken out to 700-1000 yards.
@savage1r Coming ASAP. Don't hold your breath though. It's going to take a while for everyone's schedules to line up for the event. I'll have to make a 2 hour drive to get to the nearest public 700-1000 yard range and I'll have to make arrangements to make sure filming won't be a problem.
It's possible i may have to hunt deer and elk this fall with my 91/30. It's probably a 3.5moa rifle as it sits. I'm going to float the barrel using a socket and sandpaper, polish the trigger, and cork the end of the barrel. I have leupold fx2 2.5x scout scope i'm going to mount to the rear sight rail and see if i can do 2.5 moa or better. If so i will consider it viable and just keep my shots to 200yds in. I'm going to work up a couple loads (barnes tsx & Sierra pro-hunter). Should be fun
@Iraqveteran8888 The only reason i would limit myself is because if the rifle could miss by 5 inches at 200 and i could miss by another 5 inches shooting offhand as most of my shots are, that's about as much miss as i'm willing to afford. I agree the caliber itself is fantastic, and harder hitting than my normal .308. More likely i'll be hunting with my new M1a scout squad, but i can't get past this crazy desire to kill an elk, blacktail, mule deer, and an antelope with my mosin nagant. :)
Very nice video, very nice rifles...Someone commented on the stock of the m28/76. It was designed as a dual purpose stock that could be used for competition shooting and biathlon. As I recall the earlier m28 based competition rifles were built for either 300m(?) competition or biathlon, the main difference being weight.
@SadoYeti I could of swore I read somewhere too that Snipers used them for marksmanship training also. Regardless, they are awesome rifles in their own right. Just a little too expensive for my tastes
@Iraqveteran8888 I remember that they were used as sniper training tools, for things like marksmanship qualification and had a crisis escalated into a shooting war as sniper weapons. I'll have to check a couple of books, but I do remember that the m28-57, -66 and 76 were developed with primarily international military competition target shooting and biathlon in mind(if it's good enough for that etc)as opposed to a more combat use oriented development like the later 7.62 TKIV85.
this was a great comparison of the 2 rifles..I was surprised the 91/30 shot almost as well as the Finnish rifle..would like to see another comparison when u get a different scope on the 91/30...
My cousin had an Albanian SKS but sold it cause he couldn't get any attachments for like a folding stock because of the gas tube or something like that
i have recently found a old terni italian short barreled rifle and it needs a new stock and something is in the barrel. i think rust . i was wondering if you would like to get together and try to restore it? its a very rare ww2 gun. everyone please like so he can see
@Iraqveteran8888 crap no i dont. i live in new york. is it possible for me to send it to you. i feel like i would get ripped off if i give it to the restoration shop . i will pay you if you would like
@24GordonFan223 I'll put it to you like this....I have owned more of these guns over the years than I care to admit and have personally gone through over 100 individual rifles with a meticulous hand selection process to select good shooters for customers and friends alike. Out of ALL the M44s and M38s I have ever owned (I am talking stock rifles) I have NEVER been able to make them shoot better than 4 MOA at 100 yards, and that's with good handloads.
What I am saying, is if you have an M44 that shoots 1 1/4" for 5 shots at 100 yards (or the one group out of the Finn was .437" for 5 shots at 100 yards), I;d have to see it to believe it. I find that very hard to believe based on my experience with these guns. The carbines are cool and handy, but I've never been able to get any accuracy out of them. A sporter might be a different story though. I'm sure I could take an M38 and wring a decent amount of accuracy from one. Sounds like a project.
@24GordonFan223 If that's the case, that has to be the best shooting M44 in the world. I'd still have to witness it to believe it...sorry, but I've dealt with 100's of them and none of them were good shooters....Maybe a pie plate at 100 yards. They are interesting collectibles, but in my experience they are not very good shooters.
@XxAnythingRandomXx It's not really caliber specific, it's just that companies like Norma and Laupa charge an arm and a leg for brass. I was thinking of picking up some 43 Beaumont casings from Jaminson....Yeah....5 dollars EACH. Screw that.
@Iraqveteran8888 yeah lol. i think you should get more specific on the major moss pawn guns. like the more popular ones and the unique guns. thats off subject but i liked that series
@gromann Their brass is decent, yes. In large lots I have found some of the primer pockets to be too small and sometimes off center. Stick with Winchester once fired or Norma brass for serious work.
@Iraqveteran8888 Ahh, thank you for the response already have a box of the ppu so I guess I'll give it a shot and hope for the best then try to get some win
I think the difference in stock design may of interfered with the m91 falling behind the m28 in terms of grouping. The finn looks like a comfortable stock to hold.
Dood I love seein' that Sporter in action. What was your process for selecting your original weapon for the project? Didn't I read that you slugged a good number of barrels to find one you liked? Don't think you mentioned it in any of the project videos.
