Whatever you start with, whether it's the original (e.g. 1984 TMNT comics) or a "loosely based on the original" (e.g. 1987 TMNT cartoon), you would want the series to continue being the same way you grew up with.

When Jaleco of America started localizing this game, they thought "I don't think male gamers would enjoy a game starring a female protagonist, so we'll have to change it to a male one." Come on, Sailor Moon and Lara Croft helped popularize female protagonists outside of Japan. Too bad the English NES version is on Virtual Consoles.
