@commonsensrules Oh, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (irony intended) would you are all your theist buddies STOP with the "ATHIESTS HAVE NO MORALS" bullcrap! We have heard it, and debunked it, ALL before. The justification for morality is to cause the least suffering possible to other human beings, is that so fucking complicated? If Athiests are so immoral, why are there WAY more thiests per capita in prison? God doesn't give you morals, it's just an excuse to forgive your immorality.
@commonsensrules This belief that humans need a some sort of external rule book to live by is false to begin with. Obeying external rules (religion) actually rates lower on the stages of moral development then when one uses their own judgement towards what they believe is best for everyone.
Also, id you believe in a god simply because the idea was drilled into your head via a holy book, it is you lacks reason, not people who require evidence to believe in such a thing
Oh by the way since it seems there is a religion debate here, allow me to clarify why I have such a dislike towards religion and Christianity specifically. 1 Christians believe that god gives them the right to exploit plants and animals for their own wants. 2 Christians believe that the world will be ended by god, possibly some time soon (judgement day/ rapture). Therefore this leaves them with little to no motivation to protect the environment or to care for a dying planet. What else can I say?
@kenny8331 Oh sorry was I making this up? Here in Canada we have a conservative government with a member who said that Jesus would like Canada to prepare for the end times. It is written in the Bible that a sort of armageddon will occur where the Christians are saved and the non christian are left to burn. I think that most christians in the government have made it clear that they dont care about the environment.
@aristurtle1 most people in our governments are christians. i think its corrupt government officials and big money more than christians. and even in science we know there will be an end and there is no guarantee it wont be tomorrow. being athe smartest creatures at the top of the food chain is what makes us take advantage of other living things not religion stupid
@commonsensrules Every time I see this argument I just laugh. You think humanity needs to lower theur rational standards to simply believing in rules in a book, just for the sake of having faith. I would rather that someone commits a good deed because they have thought about what is best for all involved and chosen to exercise compassion, than someone who just does things to get rewarded by a fictional entity. You know the religious opinion is without reason.
First of all, You are so wrapped up in your own inability to rationalize that you dismiss the distinct possibility that a creator may infact exist. You have obviously made a snap judgement based on nothing more than intuition.
If not, then please explain to us all the evidense you have uncovered that shows a creator does not exist?
Thought not! So save your condescension for those that do not recognize it for what it really is- an idiots ploy to seem superior!
@commonsensrules I have never refused to acknowledge the possibility of a creator, and neither does anyone else that you label "atheist", since this would mirror the ridiculous certainty that the religious tend to demonstrate. I also admit, as does everyone else that one cannot prove that something does not exist. However I think it is quite obvious that the specific details offered by religion in terms of the nature of the universe are simply made up. Again god or zeus, whos more real?
It dawned on me as I was lighting a bowl. Neil DeGrasse is A POTHEAD. It takes one to know one. Yo, homeboy has a secret addiction. Puff -puff give, nigga.
Its not that the earth or universe wants to kill us, its just a volcano erupts and we just so happen to be living right next to it. Second life is genetically programmed to die to ensure the species as a whole lives on.
So in a sense one would not call Sagan a Classical Atheist, but he sure was close. I believe had he thought that stance would have went unnoticed he may have admitted to his closet Atheism.
Ofcourse when you are labeled the great communicator it doesn't pay to draw lines in the sand-a feat few can sustain!
The demon Haunted world, Pale blue dot, and other works send a clear message as to the mans true feelings!
Everyone, commonsensrules is a closet Atheist, because only a fake believer would be so hypersensitive to people who question belief in god, pass it on.
I do not condemn Atheists nor christians. I simply state that NOONE IS IN A POSITION TO CLAIM AUTHORITY on the truth where creation is concerned. How can one group condemn another when neither are privy to the ultimate facts?
Atheists denegrate religion as if they themselves hold the evidence required to prove it untrue-well that is a lie!
All Atheists have is supposition and fuzzy logic-nothing more.
How does this seperate them from religious people?
@commonsensrules Aren't you using somekind of a logic/reasoning here? Have a nice day! No hard feelings! P.S.: I'd rather hold a belief with evidence.
I think this is more a problem of definition. An atheist claims that god doesn't exist whereas in truth what the athiest is thinking is that there is no evidence to support the theory of a god thus there is no reason for any human to believe this. If you believe in god you might aswell believe that he is a purple unicorn shitting rainbows, why? Because both statements have equal amount of supporting evidence, meaning no evidence.
@commonsensrules Atheists do not claim to know. They simply don't make up stories to fill in the gaps of things they don't understand. Atheists don't claim to know there is no god. They simply state the fact that there is no good reason as yet to believe there is and no evidence to suggest otherwise. "Supposition and fuzzy logic"? It may seem that way to you but that's what the rest of us called evidence of things that have been proven and can be verified. There's a difference.
People like Dr. Tyson, with their gift for gab and accessable personalities, do more for science in America than any school or organization. Just by being open to answer even the most simplistic questions give science to the common man in a way that nothing else can.
@tuzmor: Good point. With a supermassive black hole, he would have enough time to "enjoy" the experience before being stretched into a long piece of spaghetti.
@kurthanson2005 Sagan wasn't a know-it-all by any means, he was a big sceptic. If he talked about SOME issues with an know-it-all attitude it was only because he really did know it "all" about the subject. What's pompous about knowledge and expressing it to others?
I agree, Sagan was a devout Athiest so it a typical trait of non- believers! With no consequence for ones actions, the next logical step is to assume the mantle of God.
People like Sagan,Dawkins,Hitchens and a whole slew of other failed dictators found the absence of God to be very profitable and conveniant.
Most of the little idiot sheep that parrot Atheism do so because of the "look at me, i'm different" feeling it gives them.
It's a good thing you lead with "Sagan was a devout Atheist", so that you reveal you're a willfully misinformed idiot in the first sentence of your post.
On Charlie Rose, his last show before his death, he gave an insight into his opinion when asked by Rose on his views on faith: 'In my opinion- Holding a belief without evidence, is a mistake'.
Hmm!
Before Carl Sagan died he said 'I go to the dreamless sleep from which thre is no awakening". Sounds like an atheist to me
More hmmm.
Check wikipedia- Sagan was considered by most to be an Atheist although he expressed disdain for Atheism calling it stupidity!
@commonsensrules "With no consequence for ones actions, the next logical step is to assume the mantle of God". Really? I think you'll find there are lots of 'real' consequences for ones actions in this life. Everything you do has an effect on someone and those are the things we must consider before taking actions. I am held accountable for my actions by everyone else around me in society. Your comment is the statement of someone with psychopathic behavioural problems.
You have never studied history! The absense of divine providence has never been productive to society. The idea that their is no higher power leads to eventual chaos-although i realize you hold on to the ideaology that we are beyond the need for such primitve rituals, History has shown repeatedly that mans laws alone are never good enough to stem the rising tide of chaos that persists and permeates society.
Humanity will always need God in one form or another.
@commonsensrules Not sure which planets history you are referring to but the planet i live on has a history peppered with religious wars and destruction. I am accountable for my actions to everyone else on this planet. The things i do affect those around me. "Why love? Why care for those that are oppressed? Why live by a moral code? Why not take what you want-afterall, there is no real price to pay?"
@Crell1 That's.... obviously not what he is stating. It just so happens that we live in a Universe not perfectly tuned for life. He's ridiculing the people who actually believe that this Universe is well-tuned/"Designed" with life in mind. The Universe is not a conscience being and therefore obviously isn't making the decision to be dangerous. It just so happens that the Universe just is that way.
@erkmedia Life itself is not perfectly tuned for life. Everyone who was infected by E. coli, STAPH, plague bacteria or worse know that. All living creatures are pussies especially humans.
That's a point that a disagree from Tyson. I like so much many things he says, but the fact of the universe being so violent doesn't mean there's not a God, or the universe is not made for us. We are in here for so many time, and till now nothing happened, if the chances of mankind being extinct are so big, why are we still here? The true ignorance is to affirm the religion and the existence of God is foolishness without study and see the racional theories about it that everybody loves to ignore
@renanchaosguitar Till now nothing happened? How about the life that existed on earth for well over a billion years before us? Also it's rather naive to assume that since we haven't been able to prove live elsewhere that it doesn't exist, so what about that...still nothing? No the violence occurring in our cosmos does not disprove god, however I think it does disprove the cosmos being shaped for our existence.
@clgrnt - What you didn't understand is that I said nothing happened to us (human beings). No asteroid, no black holes, with so many things trying to kill us in the universe, we humans are still here, and for so many time. The probability of an universe disaster put an end in our existence is so high, and we're still here. It takes so much complexity for life may be able, and we have everything of this on our planet. I don't believe all of this is just work of luck.
@renanchaosguitar What seems to escape you is that we have been affected by some of those things. Look how many huge asteroids have struck the earth, something which is quite rare considering we have such a large gas giant like jupiter attracting many of the asteroids which would pose a threat to us. Species have been wiped out by these things and we have been around to experience them in some forms. Check out the tunguska event of the early 1900's.
@renanchaosguitar Also when you're dealing with the universe you can't say how likely it is for us to be destroyed by a black hole or supernova because even in a galaxy of billions of stars those events are still extremely rare. So really, the likelihood is in fact rather low. It's not work of luck, it's just a matter of numbers. When you have literally trillions of stars...one is going to provide ideal conditions such as ours, and water is not nearly as rare as we once thought.
Only those like Neil would want enlightenment at that moment. While I admire him on many levels, I would beg for ignorance of my final moment(s)... :)
His excitement about science is definitely contagious. It seems to me though that the curiosity is lost when it comes to topics such as spirituality.
I guess that is another line of reasoning, but it all ties together in the end. If people really want to understand science, they must first understand our personal role within the order of things.
personal role? what fuckin drugs you smokin dont be so self important. If you believe that your utterly insignifigant life has any bearing on "the order of things" i hope you mean as worm food
Call it what you will, but science still doesn't understand consciousness; though they will eventually unite.
As science advances we begin to see the world in new ways. You might think that science has answered a great deal right now, but I think the universe still has quite a few surprises left for us.
You may think spirituality is wishy-washy, but there are still those who try to see it within the realm of explainable phenomena. Please don't assume.
@dietermauer I fully realize that I don't understand science remotely as well as Prof. Tyson. However, it's still necessary to be careful with your choice of language, regardless of the field you are an expert in.
He says "There are many ways earth is trying to and wants to kill you". Really?
He is anthropomorphizing a planet made up of natural elements. Obviously his subjective perspective has come in to play here. That is all I was trying to state.
I've suspected for a long time that Tyson isn't nearly as intelligent as people seem to think he is. He's a bit of a quack. I've heard him say things here and there that have shocked me with their ignorance. This video is just further evidence. "Your own enlightenment in these last few moments of life"??? What would that enlightenment be, exactly? The realization of what it's like to die from massive radiation poisoning long, long, before you get anywhere near any black hole?
Dr. Tyson must know the Precession of the Equinoxes is caused by the wobble of the earth's axis. December 21, 2012 is the first day of the Age of Aquarius and has nothing to do with the end of the world, Planet X, etc.
Dr. Tyson must know that AGW is a scientific fraud, so why is he playing into the Hollywood propaganda machine?
YEAH! its a one time thing with every experience of death you attention deprived pathitic excuse for a black man!!! its cats like this monkey, that give us brothers a bad rap..... ....shhhh.. sickins me!
I don't understand why an intelligent black man is a threat. I admire this man. I've never heard an astrophysicist that was also a skilled communicator. Your statement shows a complete disregard for intellectual excellence. God, I hope you're not actually black but some other dummy just trying to say something ignorant. You give us brothers a bad rap...
Aha, I stand corrected. I forgot about him. I'm certain its because of the comment I was responding to. I was a bit angry at a comment I read .Yes Carl Sagan is also an expert in conveying his message. I loved his series "Cosmos" as a child and I believe he assisted Dr Tyson years ago as well...think I remember seeing another interview where Tyson mentioned it....
Chunks2dope1-whatever that means....I noticed you like to criticize Dr Tyson's videos but the best video you can post is a vid about 2 horny dogs? Are you for real? That's the best you have and you criticize Dr Tyson?
BY the way the arguments of Tyson is actually wrong and too pretentious.
Life on Earth is actually very peculiar and the special configuration that allowed our planet to proliferate life is really awesome. The tides and the single humongous moon that is quite unique allows us to have tides, which in turn has a very important role (too long to discuss). The orbit and the precise distance that allowed us to have the right temp., the Van Allen Belt, the carbon based biochemistry, etc...
Next, studying the ecosystem is something that is by itself awesome,
Nature self regulates itself after each catastrophe is also unbelievable. Even humans are part of it unconsciously: study about the baby booms after the great wars. Also the Earth is "like" almost perfectly designed to the hazards of the outer universe. The oxygen in the atmosphere burns any reasonable sized meteorite, the O3 filters harmful UV, The Van Allen belt filters harmful cosmic radiation from the Sun and other sources.
Come on Tyson, in such a negative and hazardous universe with high energy blazing particles everywhere and randomly generated planets around the physical universe, what are the odds of having a planet with such a perfect condition (with so many variables, from planetary inclination, spin, orbit, chemistry allowing this homeostasis) that allowed the thriving existence of self sustainable life? We are REALLY privileged to be alive and to have evolved up to become a sentient self conscious state.
yeah it's just these alignment of circumstances that's allowed life to flourish and if one little thing goes wrong it can wipe life off the face of the earth.. not that it wont come back.. this has happened bazillions of times in the past how can you argue it?
NDT!! I do love his shit. BUT, I don't know if i wanna go through the black hole! I think it would hurt when my balls came apart into a single particle stream! OOOOOOOOOW!!
why?...that would be terrible...a video of him after he dropped some acid would be astonishing tho...if you're gonna use drugs, use the ones that have proven to be effective scientific tools...like pot and lsd
Given Einstein's theory that time slows down in and around a black hole... Do you think that if you were sucked into one, it would take thousands of years for you to actually die? If you've got a response or any input, feel free to send me a message.
i think on the event horizon time stops for the outside observer. I am not sure though. If so, you would be frozen in time for us but for you you wouldnt.
You're assuming we're separate from time. Einstein also showed us that time is subjective, not absolute. If time slowed down TODAY I doubt any of us would realize it unless we had some standard to compare it to.
Isn't it true that when you go through the even horizon of a black hole, there are portals (so to speak) that can take you into the past/future if you have, by chance, created a spaceship that can survive the forces in a black hole ????
Pluto doesn't care if you call it a planet, a dwarf planet or a kuiper belt objects ... its still gonna be there, revolving around the sun in its eccentric elliptical orbit ...
Dammit, why is this so short, give me the whole damn interview, I got blue balls here!! lol, but I seen it b4 in full, he mentions it in diff interviews, but I just wanted 2 c it all in full again
I just try to apply (Mine, even if it is faulty which often upon re-examination it is) what I see as fair. Honestly, I have no idea what I even said anymore.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is fascinating to learn from in so many ways. However, the earth and universe don't "want" to kill us. They are not conscience beings with an agenda. As that famous bumper sticker reads, "SHIT HAPPENS". I was a little surprised to see him wording it that way. Anyways, he's right up there with the likes of Carl Sagan. Maybe not in how he uses language or like the vocals that Carl did so well on Cosmos, but up in that same class as an amazing educator :).
Well, I personally didn't take what he said as literally as you did. I thought his purpose for wording it that way was to kind of combat the idea that the universe was designed specifically for us in a more lighthearted manner. But, I definitely agree that he and Sagan and in the same league. Sagan was poetic, and truly made science beautiful. Tyson's passion for science and for educating people is incredibly inspiring. Dawkins could learn a thing or two from these dudes.

I think that most christians in the government have made it clear that they dont care about the environment.
aristurtle1 6 months ago
@aristurtle1 most people in our governments are christians. i think its corrupt government officials and big money more than christians. and even in science we know there will be an end and there is no guarantee it wont be tomorrow. being athe smartest creatures at the top of the food chain is what makes us take advantage of other living things not religion stupid
kenny8331 6 months ago
@commonsensrules Every time I see this argument I just laugh. You think humanity needs to lower theur rational standards to simply believing in rules in a book, just for the sake of having faith. I would rather that someone commits a good deed because they have thought about what is best for all involved and chosen to exercise compassion, than someone who just does things to get rewarded by a fictional entity. You know the religious opinion is without reason.
aristurtle1 6 months ago
@aristurtle1

So in a sense one would not call Sagan a Classical Atheist, but he sure was close. I believe had he thought that stance would have went unnoticed he may have admitted to his closet Atheism.
Ofcourse when you are labeled the great communicator it doesn't pay to draw lines in the sand-a feat few can sustain!

@RalphClassic
How does this seperate them from religious people?
commonsensrules 10 months ago
@commonsensrules Aren't you using somekind of a logic/reasoning here? Have a nice day! No hard feelings! P.S.: I'd rather hold a belief with evidence.
szmako 10 months ago
@commonsensrules
Because both statements have equal amount of supporting evidence, meaning no evidence.
meckerarma 10 months ago
@commonsensrules Atheists do not claim to know. They simply don't make up stories to fill in the gaps of things they don't understand. Atheists don't claim to know there is no god. They simply state the fact that there is no good reason as yet to believe there is and no evidence to suggest otherwise. "Supposition and fuzzy logic"? It may seem that way to you but that's what the rest of us called evidence of things that have been proven and can be verified. There's a difference.

That's a point that a disagree from Tyson. I like so much many things he says, but the fact of the universe being so violent doesn't mean there's not a God, or the universe is not made for us. We are in here for so many time, and till now nothing happened, if the chances of mankind being extinct are so big, why are we still here? The true ignorance is to affirm the religion and the existence of God is foolishness without study and see the racional theories about it that everybody loves to ignore
renanchaosguitar 1 year ago

I don't believe all of this is just work of luck.
renanchaosguitar 1 year ago
@renanchaosguitar What seems to escape you is that we have been affected by some of those things. Look how many huge asteroids have struck the earth, something which is quite rare considering we have such a large gas giant like jupiter attracting many of the asteroids which would pose a threat to us. Species have been wiped out by these things and we have been around to experience them in some forms. Check out the tunguska event of the early 1900's.
clgrnt 1 year ago
@renanchaosguitar Also when you're dealing with the universe you can't say how likely it is for us to be destroyed by a black hole or supernova because even in a galaxy of billions of stars those events are still extremely rare. So really, the likelihood is in fact rather low. It's not work of luck, it's just a matter of numbers. When you have literally trillions of stars...one is going to provide ideal conditions such as ours, and water is not nearly as rare as we once thought.

kevmo182 1 year ago 6
His excitement about science is definitely contagious. It seems to me though that the curiosity is lost when it comes to topics such as spirituality.
I guess that is another line of reasoning, but it all ties together in the end. If people really want to understand science, they must first understand our personal role within the order of things.

LeoFrom1965 3 years ago
Well, I personally didn't take what he said as literally as you did. I thought his purpose for wording it that way was to kind of combat the idea that the universe was designed specifically for us in a more lighthearted manner. But, I definitely agree that he and Sagan and in the same league. Sagan was poetic, and truly made science beautiful. Tyson's passion for science and for educating people is incredibly inspiring. Dawkins could learn a thing or two from these dudes.
