I was wondering through the folk life festival in Seattle 10 years ago when I heard this haunting melody in the distance. I followed it to the Martin Sexton stage. That was the first time I saw him. Had one of the best nights in my life.
The first time I saw Sexton was in Ann Arbor at the Ark...never seen bigger smiles on my mom and dad's faces! And...I do believe that my moms was crushing on Mr. Sexton *grins* I must of been in my early 20's?! The PERFECT venue for this one of a kind artist! I just wish I could meet you...just once...you hot rockin one of a kind real deal artist!! Hot!!!
Go along with silta2, these artists aren't in trend right now, and to be quite honest, I like it that way, let everyone else have their Lady Gaga's and Lil Wayne's. I am able to see my biggest idols from 10 feet away in a small venue with a group of people that are as passionate about good music as I am. Btw, he just took this song and added countless more dimensions than any other cover of Woodstock I have heard before.
Ok this is weird. Earlier today I was humming Woodstock. As I was doing that I kept sort of remembering about "A day in the life of." So I got home and searched for Woodstock on youtbue and found this. I was digging it unttil he shifted into the Beatles song. That's amazing, it's like the two songs just flow together :) Creepy yet cool.
Unbelievably talented. I met Martin at the High Sierra Music Fest back in 96, at the beer concession. Kind of a short guy, but wow, what a giant on stage.
seems to me the best music is this unclassifiable kind, like our pal Martin who bounces around genres and makes different sounds. We don't want him popular. Just keep touring and recording... recording and touring, small venues where we know and love him like Duluth, MN. Lets just hope his bills are at least getting paid.
I became a fan of Martin's 2 years ago when someone introduced me to him... I found out this weekend (too late) that he was performing locally at a festival. I was gutted because for 2 years I've wanted to see him live. I don't know that proper fame would ruin his performing... it's ingrained. This is music at its best.
God forbid he ever gets "famous" or "popular"...he's easily the best live performer on the planet. How do you categorize him? how do you evaluate his performance? There's simply nobody that can compare to his style and talent, not to mention soul and vocal range, seriously, if he became famous it'd take away from him because people would be trying to imitate him
Famous,I've thought the same thing before;you could get bent about it, or recognize that it's happened before. But when you tour, start your own label to maintain "it",like Martin,Ani,and other musicians who are working it out there, one could hope they're earning everything. Point behind the statement? Prbably expressing a thought-prevoking opinion. Glad to see the rhetorical question button works on your keyboard, Symbionts. It's right next to the "pompous musical ass" bar. Give that a whirl.
What difference does it make if he is "famous" or not? Does this performance become less valid if he is successful or if the general public consensus agrees with you? What is the point behind statements like this?
I discovered Martin about ten years ago, and have yet to have the pleasure of seeing him live. I guess this will have to do for now. This guy is an amazing performer. Thanks for posting.

Great to see him still going... saw him in '95 in Rochester, NY and it took me a long long time to get over it.
