  • Dean ought to be a role model for all of us, with his grace, charm, accountability etc as set out in the opening credits. He certainly is for me anyway.

  • Dean's laugh at 5:23 is fucking priceless

  • Comment removed

  • Delightful to see the prince of horror writers back on the screen. Has anyone bought a copy of Slicer VI?

  • the canned laughter ruins this for me. Does it you?

  • man I really want to like this show, but the laughing is killing me. I really don't need someone laughing over the jokes to let me know when something is funny

  • @norterrible See it as a part of the satire, because it is.

  • He really is the worlds leading British Man

  • Why compare the 2? they are both amazing shows made by a hilarious group of people, watch both, laugh.

  • @I3lindGuardian Exactly!

  • fucking laugh track...goddamit

  • Laugh tracks are the devil

  • SHOPS ARE NOW, A CLOSING!

  • Can anyone tells me what is this that Dean Learner has difficulties to digest (after Marenghi spoke about cheese) ? I just can't get the word.

    Thank you!

  • @booxter79 mackerel, it's a type of fish

  • Difficult situation with the laughter, take it out and you ruin the whole premise of the show. But, having it like it is means that the audience is laughing at things that, in Deans mind, aren't funny yet he still sets them up like punch lines for the audience thus affecting the believability of the character.

For me though, I couldn't care less. Funny is funny.

  • Fucking hell you people above me, can't you enjoy Darkplace AND the Boosh, do you have to reject one to enjoy the other? They are BOTH good for fucks sake.

  • The audience laughing really kills any chance of this being funny

  • @EARUINER only if you're an idiot.

  • @SvenBoogie I'm sorry, but planned laughter NEVER makes a show look good. Hell, two and a half men would be mildly funnier without the audience laughing.

Personally, i just don't think this show is decent full stop.

  • Ayoade makes such subtle and smart formulated jokes, I love his style!

  • i think the laughter really detracts from the show...

  • Dark Place must've been a hoot to write.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't mind the laughter here actually... the show is funny enough to warrant it, and it makes it seem like a live comedy. It fits.

  • GRR hate audience laughter/laugh tracks.

  • If you only buy one Garth Marenghi book, buy this one which is all of them. Dean Learner's publishing company spares no expense as evidenced by the genuine cat-bone.

  • haven't seen ayoade in anything for a while, hoping they make another season of darkplace or the it crowd

  • Wish someone could get copies of Fernwood 2Nite on YouTube...or even on DVD. They did this as good if not better.

  • im from australia, a neutral country in this debate

sorry america, compared to the brits ur comedy sucks ASS!!!

  • ramblescruff:

I'm American & I've been saying that since I was in grade school watching Red Dwarf! The Brits continue to get better & better.

  • @ramblescruff As an Australian I concur

  • @ramblescruff

Thats ok.. Most of us don't like our comedy either.

  • Boosh sucks now... They got full of themselves. Darkplace tops it in every sense!

boosh season 1 was decent, it went down hill afer that

  • Dark Place is the best for sure.

  • @HarleyDalle I completely disagree, I think they got better as they went on. Season 3 was by far the funniest and most intelligent

  • @jinxer999 ye

  • @jinxer999 I agree. I think Series 3 was the best and most surreal.

  • @HarleyDalle

2 was good as well. but it's true that they had more budget, fame and substances than they knew what to deal with for the third series and it just didn't have the same feel. was more crude but not as funny

  • This was a pretty good series but Darkplace is miles better, I would have liked it if they did a second series instead of this.

  • Live studio audience is not canned laughter you noobs. These guys deliver a live performance in front a flesh & blood audience.

  • Why the dreadful canned laughter?....Always a bad sign..and the reason this was never recommissioned. Not all footlights talent is funny.

  • @mentelle48 It's supposed to be a piss take...

  • its satire on chat shows...

  • its a sad day for dean when i have to say... listen love get in the cab coz its not happening.

  • They're going to have to get two body bags ready - this guys critically ill - and I'm dying of laughter.

  • Richard Ayoade is my new favourite person.

  • @Hozzas I don't know why but I still prefer Matthew Hollness (Plays Garth Marenghi and others...), although Ayoade gives an awesome performance!

  • The IT Crowd was the best show on British television, except for maybe the Doctor.

  • @DarthJardar

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was/is better that The It Crowd, althiugh The IT Crowd is fucking awesome, as well.

  • @MetallicARbest1 I concur, I concur an in concurable amount.

  • am i the only one who thinks darkplace was just that bit smarter and funnier than even the boosh?

and i dont say that lightly

  • do you say it in a deep voice ?

  • Darkplace was and is the most radical, balls to the wall and daring show chanel 4 ever put out. It made and broke Todd Rivers! It beats the Boosh to death!

  • god-damn right...it makes the experiance of sittin' through the finest episodes of the simpsons akin to sittin' through a non-narcotic-involved root canal....

  • biggest televisual event since quantum leap.

  • And I do not say that lightly.

  • it was way the hell out there

  • @ShankingArmitage No you are not the only one! Though the 13 year old Boosh fans would probably throw pennies at you.

  • @ShankingArmitage boosh is a kids show with mild swearing, like the simpsons, it isnt funny, just enjoyable

  • ShankingArmitage:

Although I love The Mighty Boosh, if I miss an episode, I can take it or leave it 'cause it will come on again, later that night, on Adult Swim. However, I CAN'T MISS DARKPLACE. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace owns The Mighty Boosh, but in the end, I love both.

  • @SpankRamen2

yeah you might be right. I kinda disagree but clearly you've got a sense of humour ramen. unlike the comment writers either side of you.

being english helps though, wouldnt have thought they wouldve bothered puttin it out in the US but there must be a market

  • @ShankingArmitage theres nothing smart about boosh, and barely anything funny.

  • you need to be english mate, like we dont get why some of ur sitcoms are so big. comedy' has to be relative

  • @ShankingArmitage Oh no, you're absolutely right about that

  • I love how the word, "accountability" shows up in the montage of words regarding the content of the show in the introduction - holy shit is that funny.

  • cheese

  • @sugarsean1 ya think?

  • Too funny!

  • It's a seperate series; a spin off from Darkplace.

  • richard ayoade is quite possibly the greates actor of like ever

  • "Are you real?"

    "Yes. . . ?"

    "But are you really?"

"Ooh stop it, Garth, you're beginning to creep me out!"

Haha. Richard Ayoade is a comedic genius.

  • Where do these "soft rock" bell-ends get off??

  • not quite up there with darkplace, but superb none the less

  • This is the most intelligent Chat Show I have ever seen ;)

That said I remained convinced of the existence of Loos

I bet Bram Stoker would have loved "Horrotica"

    :D

  • damn laugh tracks

  • Like all traditional chat shows it's filmed before an audience.

The video segments are then played to the audience.

I remember seeing a web site (must have been channel 4's) with recording dates and ticket application info.

  • laugh track? you mean studio audience right? they supposed to sit there not laughing the whole time?...

  • it is a laugh track tho :S

  • it's supposed to be a crappily applied laugh track. this is a parody.

  • If ever a biopic of Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott is made Richard Ayoade should be cast in the lead role. He's the spitting image of him when playing the Dean Learner role.

  • i second that emotion

  • This is a brilliant suggestion, actually. There was one in the works and they'd cast Gary Dourdan from CSI in the role, but the remaining members of Thin Lizzy won't greenlight the script as is because it focuses too much on Lynott's drug use and not enough on his music (and good on them for it), so it's been shelved. If they ever give it another go, RA would get the accent right, he's got better chops, and he looks a hell of a lot more like him.

  • Holy crap, i loved this show!

the beginning of pure Channel 4 GOLD!

  • Garth Merenghi ?

    he's hilarious :|

  • check out a show called "garth merengi's darkplace".

  • shame about the studio audience/laughter track

  • Seriously, who thought a laughter track was a good idea for this show? It's completely out of place! Might as well give Peep Show a laugh track as well.

  • its only there to give it a live audience chatshow feel - although it is really annoying!

  • to be fair if they took out the laughter track a lot of their pauses would seem reaaally unnatural.

  • its not a track, there is an actually audience, same with the IT crowd.

  • I have to agree with Garth on the power of cheese.

  • 5:15... the Garth Marenghi laugh... lol.

  • yeah but its the point its meant to be like a live prime time talk show

  • Dean Learner always strikes me as a camper version of Phil Lynott. LOL

  • richard ayoade i meant

  • that is of course if when they casted the american comedians they went on merit not popularity or else we would have dane cook or one of those idiot redneck blue collar tour guys with someone genius like david mitchell or david ayoade

  • technically he has been shown in america already loverandfighter because for a few months they showed the whole room of darkplace on adult swim, but as far as a role in something american idk but hopefully he will get something, (on an unrelated note) frankly i'm very surprised that david mitchell hasn't been hasn't been offered anything, the people in charge of things like that need to be doing more to have shows with like brits and americans both to be able to cross over and be hilarious

  • wonder how long before richard goes to america

  • has already helped in remaking the IT crowd for a US audience and i believe he may star in it although i do not know to what extent

  • "books that would scare you stiff"

    class

  • For everyone bitching about the laughter, WTF are you talking about!? It's a satirical show just like Darkplace. You need the laughter to convey the sense of realism as another person pointed out below. It would be like trying to watch Darkplace without the introductions and the interview cut-ins, it just wouldn't make any sense.

  • I don't know what I wouldn't do for 6 new episodes of Darkplace.

  • if you only buy one garth marenghi book buy this one...which is all of them. haha awesome

  • "I wanted to release books that would give the reader a boner, but leave him too terrified to do anything about it."

I made the mistake of eating cereal and milk while watching this.

  • The toilet is a lie.

  • it was filmed in front of a studio audience. i know this for a FACT. but that still doesn't mean that they don't use canned laughter. either way, it works.

  • I liked him better in darkplace! but he's still awesome

  • doesnt need canned laughter... garth merengi never did

    xx

  • but this is a completely different show. this is a parody of a talk show, most of which are filmed in front of audiences

  • "I'm starting to doubt the existence of the toilet by this stafe of the Procedings".

    Friggin briliant.

  • Man To Man is just genious. And that laugh at 5:16 is just mental. More from these guys. More Darkplace please.

  • STOP MOANING ABOUT THE LAUGHTER.

its a satire of a chat show, its supposed to have a studio audience.

    you soft rock bellends.....

  • yeah but if you notice thier not laughing at whats satiricly supposed to be funny, but what actualy is meant for us to find funnyy. which sucks clems

  • yeah i see your point(s) but it wouldnt have worked at all if it was "please welcome your host, dean learner!" *Silence*

  • A bunch of claps would maybe have worked..

  • why is that thumbs down? thats so true.

  • would have been better without the laughter.

  • is it actually a laugh track or anaudience?, it's quite hard to tell on this one

  • its not a laugh

     track its called an audience!!

  • Oh, stop it, Garth. You're creepin' me out.

  • if you only buy one garth marenghi book. buy this one. which is all of them. lol

  • Oops, typo.

    Ayoade**

  • Richard Aoyade is a genius.

  • Not as good as Dark Place, I don't like the laughtrack.

  • i think the laughtrack is slightly tongue in cheek

  • its an audience...

  • is it just me or do you see a connection between the "I eat alot of cheese which gives me these fantastic vivid dreams" and The Mighty Boosh's Cheese Dreams from series 1?

  • Annnd the questioning at the end. Yes but do we really dream?

  • they are connected! the mighty boosh and this do share actors and possibly writers!

vince noir and that other fella are in darkplace dressed as gorillas and priests!

  • That other fella? JULIAN BARRATT is his name, he's amazing you should check him out!

  • Saboo you slag!

  • LOL "if you buy only one of my books, make it this one...which is all of them" these guys are comic geniuses.

  • not as funny as dark place. I dont like the way that Dean thinks he has to make the audience laugh its much better when they do their own humour and dont give a shit what people think.

  • not quite as good as darkplace but still fantastic.I love the fact they`ve created there own t.v world with this and darkplace[staying in character for the commentary was a great idea].It`s a shame this wasn`t more popular,i hope they have something new in the pipeline.

  • Theres always so much bitching about the studio audience but surely its mean to be a down market chat show, so it just adds to the authenticity?

  • I worked on this show. It was filmed with a live studio audience. They did two run throughs and build the final show out of those two. That's how they wanted to do it hence the laughter cannot be removed.

  • got the point mate...chill out and go watch someone you do like. what did he do, sleep with your girlfriend?

  • No... He slept with my mum though. The bastard.

  • and you do know that ayoede co-created darkplace, and probably this show too, amongst other things - he's not just an irritant if that's how you find him.

  • Yeah, nobody should ever branch out to different forms of humour. Just keep reusing safe stuff which has worked before.

  • The audience ruins this. All the genius of darkplace is there but the audience ruins it by laughing.

  • how could you have a chat show without an audience?

  • The laughter removes the dead-pan element...actually I'm not going to bother trying to explain. If you don't get it you don't get it.

  • i do "get it" i'm just saying it would be unrealistic to have a chat show without an audience.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace - they didn't put a laughter track on that and it worked well.

Sometimes its appropriate, but i agree most of the time it ruins comedy. Not everything has to be "the office" you know.

  • hahaha

because i like the distinct lack of wit or a coherent sentence - i'll let you off

  • that didn't even make sense. I don't think a person of your limits should be watching this kind of comedy.

  • if was a "fucking supreme idiot" shouldn't it be only right that i listen to my "shit music"?

Typing in big letters just makes you look even more of a tit, mate.

    God i hate students.

  • hmm yes, quite

  • agreed, wish I could switch it off.

  • Ya the laughing track kind of kills the humor for me.

  • Hasn't this been done already? "knowing me- Knowing you" with Alan Partridge springs to mind.

  • the canned laugter is fucking unbearble:(

  • It's not canned laughter, england doesn't do canned laughter its recored in front of a live audience! :O lol :D:D:D

  • Marenghi stays with that all black, purple tie :D

  • marenghi plays all the special guest i think

  • Yeah, studio audience or not, it killed it for me. I really enjoyed Dark Place, but the laughter is keeping me from even watching the second part of this.

  • thats the dumbest reason ever.

  • no it's not, i agree with terry

  • I agree, it kills the mood.
