LOL! I'm just saying, as far as I know, these videos are the only ones that show tanuki behavior. Before seeing this, I thought tanuki's moved pretty slow.
in north america racoons are like pests, they act more like rodents, or rats, they dig in the garbage cans, but when found as a baby they can be wild pets, they act more like very smart cat/ferret or rabbits, these asian raccoon dogs i just cant get over how cool they are!
I don't think they're related to raccoons at all (just look like them). Sounds a bit like a cat in that he bites suddenly and only comes when he wants.
My cat is very affectionate and then suddenly he'll bite. He won't come when I call either -I guess it's because cats still have a bit of wildness in them.
Maybe it is the same for pochi? He seems to play and act like a regular dog but as he was orginally from the wild he just isn't as obedient?
He's your pet so you know best. Maybe one day I'll get to learn more about Tanukis. He seems so fun and cuddly.
Yes - but we were discussing what type of animal their behaviour is most similar too (when they are kept as a pet).
It would be interesting to see if they act more like a dog (as they are related) or a different type of pet as they are wild (a lot of dog behaviour is due to the fact they have been domesticated for much longer than other pets, where as cats and other types of pets tend to be a bit more aloof/less eager to please etc).

Their propagative power is terrible!
They become a wild animal in Japan and seem to spread.
A Japanese animal seems to be damaged.
They become an adult, and it resembles a raccoon dog to become ferocious.
Any kind of animal is pretty in a childhood......

He is canid, but there are many points unlike a dog.
Even if I call him, he does not come.
When he wants to come, he comes.
Even if he is tame to me, he bites me suddenly.
I do not know a raccoon well, but he may be near to a raccoon.
