  • this should have been a huge hit. one of the greatest voices to come out of canada

  • i love this song.....do more

  • I have always loved this song due to the catchy lyrics, the instrumentation and, of course, the voice. This the first that I have seen the video, which really emphatically nails what thissong is all about. Awesome!

  • I love it and have since the first time I heard it. That man has a killer voice! Kindest thoughts to you, BLC for your evening at Massey.

  • I dunno. I kind of see it for what it is, a nice catchy song. I swear, I was the only one among my small circle of friends to like it when it came out. everyone else was pooh-poohing it right, left and center, claiming Cummings had no credibility anymore. Nah. I just listened and liked it, not looking for any sonic miracle, understanding that he recorded stuff like this from the heart, and not to self-promote. On its own merits, it stands.

  • Great !!!! This is Jeff Porcaro on drums.

  • One of the most powerful voices in music.

  • Burton always has some spiritual meaning in his songs. I would love to do an album with him.

  • 5spdstang (really miss my 5-speed) My thoughts as I listen, over and over: "3 babies conceived, she couldn't afford no more" followed by the confused connection to the (assumed- Catholic) Church; then her suicide. It makes me wonder about the Catholic church's longstanding [unreasonably outdated] stance on birth control and NO way would abortion be an option. Her struggle with ingrained Catholic valued and rules, leads her to another Catholic sin, one they teach is never forgiven: Suicide.

  • Nothing like a musical bitchslap to wake up humanity........

  • @5spdstang What? The dumb blonde here doesn't get your point.

  • I didn't like this song when it first came out; but 10 years later, it appears to be very pertainant! "Good Message"!! Thx

  • I have to say this of course Burton is amazing,,,He's from Winnipeg...and he is a true winnipegger he does so much for the city he was raised in...we love him dearly

  • I remember this being played ad nauseum on CKAP (C-Crap). I've caught myself humming it ever since.

  • This song really haunts me. There is a deeper meaning than I'm grasping. I've read some of the explanations below... the two with the high ratings help somewhat, but only to a point. Guess I'd have to hear Cummings himself explain.

  • @jzmet

Haunting you is exactly what he intended...now you cant stop searching inside yourself for answers can ya? :) One in a while its good to listen to some dark music..it helps cleanse the soul and purge pent up feelings.....

  • @5spdstang Tried repeatedly to post a comment on your channel but kept getting: There was an error processing your comment. Please try again. Any idea what YT's problem might be?

  • @jzmet

Have to say...no idea....utoob does some pretty strange stuff sometimes?

  • If anyone has a vid of him doing "Gordon LIghtfoot Does Maggie May" I'd LOVE to get my hands on that one!!!

  • @CoCowboy692000 I found this earlier tonight on YT. If you look at the listings along the right, you'll find he's does several impersonations. These are hilarious!

Was going to give you the link but YT gives links an error message. Just copy this into the search line and you'll have it:

    Burton Cummings- Impersonates Gordon Lightfoot

  • I think #10 is an awesome underdog album for the guess who! "self pity, take it off my shoulders, lie down, cardboard empire" GREAT SONGS PEOPLE!! see my burt/guess who video's too......good stuff

  • This is far and away my favorite Burton Cummings song. A song full of heart, soul, and definately emotion. Always tear up when I hear it. Thanks so very much for putting this video up, Burton. You're still the greatest.

  • Baring Of The Soul,,,,,VIA,,,ROCK & ROLL,,,,,BURTON is by far,,,,,,GREATEST CANADIAN VOCALIST & WRITTER......Kudos to You......

  • Great tune, Burton does it again.

  • I LOVE this song.....been listening to it since I was atleast 7!

  • One of the best voices ever, Great post, Thanks much.

  • LOL,,,,what do you mean a little song called American Woman,,,,no one could ever guess who they were that is why they mad it so big thwy thought they were the beatles or the who, but to use real canadians it is better then anyone ever, and the best vocals ever, he is awesome by far better then anyone, he is great he is perfect

  • Who are you? And if you're Canadian you should be ashamed of yourself!!! This song alone proves that he's one of the greatest Canadian artists ever, not to mention the songs that he did with the Guess Who! Get a life and maybe join the Canadian human race!

  • @Dirana1 Hey...let's all join the human race. This man (Burton) is a gift from God. All humanities God.

  • Did this guy act in bad 70s porn?

  • In the 70s he was too busy recording a little song called American women.

  • your thinking of Ron Jeremy

  • @wovokanarchy

Can you really be that stupid?

  • i love listening to a couple of his songs. reminds me of living on 7th Ave in my home town.

  • Good stuff Burt.......

  • Heart was a bad album. Woman Love and Sweet Sweet were better...

  • One of very few Cummings music

videos, he doesn't really believe in them

from what i've heard. Wants the listener

to conjure up their own images.

  • yea, he just said that he dont like music videos in a recent blog he posted.

  • ...and with a voice like that, who the hell needs videos! Burton is fabulous....

  • i don't know either i was luckly enough to get it on ebay on a cd

  • You listen to this and you are Canadian.

  • I love this song and the album "Plus Signs".

I had the great pleasure of seeing Burton Cummings perform at Ontario Place while he was promoting the album. What a fantastic performer! He had a great rapport with the audience, too.

  • Good for you. I love this guy. I have seen The Guess Who, and Big Bad Burton Cummings about 25 times since 1970 at the old CNE Stadium.

  • I have been looking for this seems like forever. such a great song

  • This is just the very best. I thought when I first heard it, at the beginning, it was Steve Perry. When I researched it later I found my favorite male singer of all time, Mr Cummings, I thank you for almost 40 years happiness whenever I hear your voice.

  • i don't why usa didn't release plus signs lp it was good lp .

  • Great song.

  • Wow !!!!!!!

    What wonderful clip!

    I loved it!

    Very good.

    Thank you Rafael for share.

  • What a heart wrenching piece of music. Brings tears to my eyes.

  • wow this is one of the best, cant stop playing it .wish i was more into the guess who back in the 70s_90s,my laptop brings it all at my finger tips...

  • A haunting, heart-rending tale that resonates with your core humanity & capacity for empathy. Never has Burton's stirring voice been more appropriately paired; than with the cautionary lyrics relating this lamentable story. Although the circa. 1990 layered production style & circumstances { Burton home recorded & played almost all instruments on the LP } may make this studio version seem somewhat barren musically, it does underscore the desolation, bleakness & texture of the song's tragic saga.

  • No doubt this song is perfect for Cumming's voice, no doubt too he write this song, and like we said in Brazil "o resto é conversa mole e papo furado"

    JackStarkey.

  • Three babies conceived she couldn't afford them all

    The curtain begins to fall

    Take one away

Five o'clock in the morning ... oh just an hour ago

She might have been alive you know

    But they took one away

    Brilliant and painful lyrics

  • This song is his best .

  • Burton, you are credited with having one of the three most recognized voices in rock and roll.

John Fogerty Paul Rogers and Yours

  • You have to keep this Video Alive! Please Send To All Your E-Mail Friends!!!

  • I like this song, but I wish i knew what the hell it's about!

  • Gawd shifta65, me too!! someone said it was about not having religion in their soul until late in life. I still don't get it, but it is a great song.

  • I think it may be about having the church supply all the answers for you, and the way they don't always work out. Resulting in a barrenness of the spirit. We all have our dark nights of the soul. Some don't make it through to the morning light.

But we shouldn't give up on Spirit just because men don't always have the answer. You have to find that Voice within yourself, you know.

  • Nicely said!

  • Thank you. His eyes still haunt me...

  • Such a great song! Love it, and everytime I see him I hope he plays it!

  • Loved your tour with Randy!!! Hope to catch you two again!!!

  • Never saw this since I live in New York. I love this song, it means a lot to me. Thank you for this post!

  • One of your many greats, was an honor to see you at the Riverbend Festival.

  • Powerfull Song!!! Wish it was more played!!!

  • What A Awsome Song!!!

  • Burton Cummings' voice, in the classic rock world, is rivaled only by Steven Perry of Journey, in my humble opinion. Burton has *always* been my favorite, and as far as versatility in his vocals--he is rivaled by none. Burton, you are a true master of your craft.

  • Amazing heart wrenching song!

    What a voice!

    Thank you!

  • brilliant song loved it 5 stars
