I have always loved this song due to the catchy lyrics, the instrumentation and, of course, the voice. This the first that I have seen the video, which really emphatically nails what thissong is all about. Awesome!
I dunno. I kind of see it for what it is, a nice catchy song. I swear, I was the only one among my small circle of friends to like it when it came out. everyone else was pooh-poohing it right, left and center, claiming Cummings had no credibility anymore. Nah. I just listened and liked it, not looking for any sonic miracle, understanding that he recorded stuff like this from the heart, and not to self-promote. On its own merits, it stands.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
5spdstang (really miss my 5-speed) My thoughts as I listen, over and over: "3 babies conceived, she couldn't afford no more" followed by the confused connection to the (assumed- Catholic) Church; then her suicide. It makes me wonder about the Catholic church's longstanding [unreasonably outdated] stance on birth control and NO way would abortion be an option. Her struggle with ingrained Catholic valued and rules, leads her to another Catholic sin, one they teach is never forgiven: Suicide.
I have to say this of course Burton is amazing,,,He's from Winnipeg...and he is a true winnipegger he does so much for the city he was raised in...we love him dearly
This song really haunts me. There is a deeper meaning than I'm grasping. I've read some of the explanations below... the two with the high ratings help somewhat, but only to a point. Guess I'd have to hear Cummings himself explain.
Haunting you is exactly what he intended...now you cant stop searching inside yourself for answers can ya? :) One in a while its good to listen to some dark music..it helps cleanse the soul and purge pent up feelings.....

Burton is one of the premier talents in music and always has been. I have seen him live at least 5 times (quit counting).... Always soothes my soul to listen to him and the Original GW too...
I think #10 is an awesome underdog album for the guess who! "self pity, take it off my shoulders, lie down, cardboard empire" GREAT SONGS PEOPLE!! see my burt/guess who video's too......good stuff
This is far and away my favorite Burton Cummings song. A song full of heart, soul, and definately emotion. Always tear up when I hear it. Thanks so very much for putting this video up, Burton. You're still the greatest.
LOL,,,,what do you mean a little song called American Woman,,,,no one could ever guess who they were that is why they mad it so big thwy thought they were the beatles or the who, but to use real canadians it is better then anyone ever, and the best vocals ever, he is awesome by far better then anyone, he is great he is perfect
Who are you? And if you're Canadian you should be ashamed of yourself!!! This song alone proves that he's one of the greatest Canadian artists ever, not to mention the songs that he did with the Guess Who! Get a life and maybe join the Canadian human race!
I had the great pleasure of seeing Burton Cummings perform at Ontario Place while he was promoting the album. What a fantastic performer! He had a great rapport with the audience, too.
This is just the very best. I thought when I first heard it, at the beginning, it was Steve Perry. When I researched it later I found my favorite male singer of all time, Mr Cummings, I thank you for almost 40 years happiness whenever I hear your voice.
A haunting, heart-rending tale that resonates with your core humanity & capacity for empathy. Never has Burton's stirring voice been more appropriately paired; than with the cautionary lyrics relating this lamentable story. Although the circa. 1990 layered production style & circumstances { Burton home recorded & played almost all instruments on the LP } may make this studio version seem somewhat barren musically, it does underscore the desolation, bleakness & texture of the song's tragic saga.
No doubt this song is perfect for Cumming's voice, no doubt too he write this song, and like we said in Brazil "o resto é conversa mole e papo furado"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Burton didn't even write this song. He stole it from his friend who wrote it about his daughter who passed away. But it doesnt matter because burtons voice is amazing.
I think it may be about having the church supply all the answers for you, and the way they don't always work out. Resulting in a barrenness of the spirit. We all have our dark nights of the soul. Some don't make it through to the morning light.
But we shouldn't give up on Spirit just because men don't always have the answer. You have to find that Voice within yourself, you know.
Burton Cummings' voice, in the classic rock world, is rivaled only by Steven Perry of Journey, in my humble opinion. Burton has *always* been my favorite, and as far as versatility in his vocals--he is rivaled by none. Burton, you are a true master of your craft.
this should have been a huge hit. one of the greatest voices to come out of canada

Three babies conceived she couldn't afford them all
The curtain begins to fall
Take one away
Five o'clock in the morning ... oh just an hour ago
She might have been alive you know
But they took one away
Brilliant and painful lyrics
