Anyone who says Lou can't play or sing is missing the whole fucking point of Lou. I love Frank, and he was a very prolific composer, but his influence is nowhere near as far-reaching as VU's. That's a fact. Just open your ears. Name more than a handful of artists that reflect Frank's influence. Also, Lou was leagues ahead of FZ, in terms of lyricism. Frank had a few moments of lyrical brilliance, but VU's lyrics were serious; not scatological nursery rhymes.
@Blogspierre Dude tell me any Velvet Underground or Lou Reed Record that is musicly good as Hot Rats. I Dare you. Not bullshit me about the "influence". Just tell me who is the best composing. Thank you.
@aebelmonter First of all, "musically good" is subjective. Is Baroque "better" than Clasical Period?
That aside, I never said he was a better composer. I DID say Lou blows frank away lyrically. You might not care about lyrics, but in my estimation, lyrics are half the equation.
90% of music that I think truly SUCKS, sucks because the lyrics are terrible. Good lyrics can save an average piece of music, much more than good music can salvage a song with annoying or uninspired lyrics.
Better to have Reed to induct Frank than some douchebag metal fuckers. Zappa respected Reed somewhat, and it served/serves as a poignant reminder of Frank's musical stoicism that he should end up having an artist as respected as Reed inducting him and his memory...
The Velvet Underground's music was at least as influential as Zappa, however they are/were not particularly memorable as musicians. Zappa, on the other hand, whilst extremely influential in his own right, was probably the most important musician/composer of the 20th Century. That's why TVU were envious..., because they realised that with Zappa, he was a composer of a completely more complex realm than Cale, et al.
It's actually strangely fitting that Reed should be doing the induction for Frank. Because they were probably the two musicians who, more than anyone else, did things their own way without caring what others thought, and made a real point. Not that it excuses Lou's past insults though! And he does look guilty during this speech...
Personally, I love both Zappa and Reed, FZ and VU. Polar opposites in many obvious ways, but each one is top notch, IMO. Who cares what artists say about each other -- notoriously unreliable!

@aNdYmAtTeR Thanks for those links. What Lou Reed said was harsh, but then again Zappa had been critical of the Velvet Underground, according to that Zappateers thread. Sterling Morrison also criticised Zappa, saying "I hate Frank Zappa. He's really horrible, but he's a good guitar player."
@robinhoodtn1 Southern Man was a provocative song, but Young said what needed to be said. a man doesn't have to be from the Southern US to point of the hypocrisy of their holding a bible in one hand while they crack the whip in the other. yes I do think Young is a good singer, in the same way Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, or even Frank Zappa are great singers, it's called having original expression, they all sound unique and great to millions of fans.
@robinhoodtn1 you're aware that Ronnie Van Zant and Neil Young were friends right? they joked about their songs poking at each other, it was all in good fun.
Steve Allen (where Zappa played the bicycle) was an absolute bastard. He had a massive ego, and he was constantly going on and on about how good he was. He certainly isn't remembered as well and as fondly as Zappa. My favorite Zappa era is definitely 1966-70.
Well, it's good to know that people are really into something, Mr. Scorpion :D Beside the fact that awards suck and mean nothing (I say that as a Zappa fan who is quite touched by seeing Moon on stage like this and my other favourite's band Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder fighting with tears too) and despite the fact I doubt you are not joking the things you count here are things mainly related to music business success...did the wall come down because of their capitalist impact?
Award's are meaningless as some have stated yet. Haven't read through the comments but I am a little confused about Lou Reed telling that they've been friends or so. The first and last thing I recall reading about FZ and LR is a report with quotes from 1966 when the Mothers started and the Velvet Underground played the same venue for a time and both bands and band leaders expressed very openly that they really dislike the other artistically and personally. has their been a change somewhen?
Oh man how proud would Frank be of his daughter after that speech?!?! Reminded me a lot of him with the ass/head, end of bullshit promises lines. Classic.
Wasn't there a rivalry between the two? I read in Zappa's biography that when the Velvet Underground and the Mothers once played the same bill, Zappa had the crowd turn on them.
@dykeritz9 I don't know...After reading a few articles and interviews with Gail and the Zappas on the subject, apparently, Reed didn't have many good things to say about Frank during his life...Actually, I was quite blown away by the whole situation, Frank's family were treated less than adequately during and leading up this event...
@dykeritz9 ...They even denied Gail's request to have Johnny "Guitar" Watson give the induction speech, for reasons which Gail chose not to reveal as she did not want to hurt Johnny's feelings. I have no doubt there were many, probably all musicians, who genuinely appreciated Frank, but it's clear reading on the issue the music 'industry' had little respect for him...To top it all, apparently Moon wasn't even provided a ride home, she waved down an NYC cab award in hand...sad. RIP, FZ
Lou said some pretty bad stuff about Zappa in the past. "He's probably the single most untalented person I've heard in my life. He's a two-bit pretentious academic, and he can't play rock'n'roll, because he's a loser. And that's why he dresses up funny. He's not happy with himself, and I think he's right."
@Deco1546 ; Zappa also derided Lou and the VU for being drugged out as well as being a crappy band. The two bands shared the bill a few times at The Fillmore (SF), The Trip(LA) , and some venues in NYC
"..And I know he admired me" : Faux pas, there, Lou. Even if true, one doesn't say it when honoring the other person. But never mind - that's our Lou.
As for the Frank/Lou thing... I'd guess a good portion of it could be chalked up to youthful willfulness, competitiveness, and maybe even some artistic insecurities. I would venture to guess that with maturity and experience, they both came to regret their past disparagements toward each other. Perhaps Lou's motivation for inducting Frank?
Btw, Moon had been crying, that's why she was sniffling and nasal.
Would have been fun hearing FZ jam with Neil Young and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, fellow inductees that year. He probably wouldn't have showed up though. FZ was not a big fan of Jann Wenner. Conversely though, I think the only reason Wenner allowed him to be inducted was that Frank was dead, since if he were alive, he would have seen it as an opportunity to make a snide comment about Rolling Stone magazine.
Lol what's with the Lou Reed hate? Granted, I don't like him or anything he's done nearly as much as Frank Zappa but VU is pretty great in it's own way.
It's an insult to an artistic giant like Zappa to have a monumental lightweight like Reed present the award......what a friggin' Manhattan counter culture lamedog fraud Reed is...to this day, he's done nothing of any note...the harbinger of the current odious culture of celebrity......
@aarfeld : because he's considered an artistic lightweight, promoted well beyond his artistic station to present such an award.......Lou Reed..what a fucking lightweight he is..what has he actually done...name one one thing he's achieved artistically.......pewkworthy
@kevinherbert: He's one of the progenitors of Punk a style of which, whether you like it or not, was extremely important and influential in the history of Rock. He's written a number of songs that are considered classics and influenced the careers of many who followed him.
@aarfeld : the only influence Reed has had on anything is to provide a target for those who believe art deserves better than pretence & slick marketing. Punk was a small and an important movement for the gr8 minority of those globally who found it attractive. Reed is a confection of the Manhattan school of art bullshit, which carves out its claimed relevance by producing nothing of artisitic merit. I can shit on a blanket & call it motion art.....Reed hasn't himself produced anything...nothing
@rolliebeaumont amen, frank's honesty, humor, fearlessness, artistic vision, virtuosity, his prolific output, etc., etc., etc., as i get older i appreciate his contribution to culture more and more.
Zappa would've loved the internet. Not only for the sake of his own music being able to reach such a wider audience, but because he was a champion for the first amendment.
zappa hated lou reed.he thought he was a no talent piece of shit.vai should've done the induction.moon unit is full of shit.her father would've never accepted this bullshit.the hall of fame is a joke.deep purple is not in,but grandmaster flash is.sacrilige.
It's probably worth noting that Zappa DID like The Velvets, though he seemed to prefer their poppier stuff: he played "All Tomorrow's Parties" on a radio show where he played stuff he liked.
There's a million reasons why Reed didn't like Zappa, most ideological & political. In the end, I don't think he could get past cultural perceptions and just enjoy music, the way Zappa could: Zappa loved the music of everything he made fun of.
Both their bands shared the budget of the same recording company (forgot which) back in the late 60s, so their bands quickly became rivals, and they started calling each other names publically. You can look this up.
Generally, the families of people like Frank need to get the notoriety for him because they want his name to be well remembered. Perhaps his music will be listened to more often because he is honored. That's what these awards should be for, right?
@mickyhikes these awards represent and mean nothing..frank didn't want to be awarded or recognized when he was still with us let alone now whene he is gone,he just wanted to be heard..as he said in the video "I don't care" and he is right,he lives on in the herts of his fans and they will surely remember him as long as they live..there is no need for this award,as I said..it's useless
@stojanovich you are wrong! This is not about how many records or tapes or cds sold. This is not about marketing or anything to do with the "BIZ". Frank wanted people to hear his music . This could have helped. Just because he did not REQUIRE acceptance in the way that many players do doesn't mean he didn't like it when we were able, somehow, to let him know how much we loved and respected him.
@3star2nr no,YOU obviously don't know who frank zappa was...business man???what are you talking about?..his family is slowly making a BRAND out of his name..and you tell me that is not shameful and disgusting?...
Lou Reed? Really? Of all people, this TOOL! Here is a quote from this hypocrite , Lou Reed on Frank Zappa: "He's probably the single most untalented person I've heard in my life. He's a two-bit pretentious academic, and he can't play rock'n'roll, because he's a loser. And that's why he dresses up funny. He's not happy with himself and I think he's right." Your the loser Lou, who wrote that for you? you could'nt even read it. You could'nt hold Franks guitar pick you one hit wonder.
There was friction simply because they both wanted the accolade of producing the first 'underground' album.Admittedly their genres are far apart but I'm sure all the antipathy had long since expired.I love them both,or at least the stuff they did in the 60's and early 70's.
Yes,, that's why he was booed. He said a lot of shit about California and Frank Zappa and how much he hated them both in the 60's-70's. How CA was full of acid heads who were happy all the time (vs the brooding speed freaks in black turtlenecks of NY) and how brilliant Zappa was supposed to be, but how much he hated Z's work. I'm shocked that he was the presenter, and I don't really think Zappa did respect him, as he stated.
Really? I thought he was snickering. I actually really do like Lou and the Velvets a lot, but he's like your old bitchy aunt who always assumes you're dumber than she is and blows cigarette smoke at you. He married Laurie Anderson though, and that's pretty cool. Love his work all the way through the New York album, and his songs for Rock and Rule.
would Frank have received this if he hadn't died? I don't know, but it is good because his body of work deserves to be further recognized, if only so more people would check it out...
Anyone who says Lou can't play or sing is missing the whole fucking point of Lou. I love Frank, and he was a very prolific composer, but his influence is nowhere near as far-reaching as VU's.

No mention of how Frank couldn't stand 99% of the music produced by those in the room.

It's an insult to an artistic giant like Zappa to have a monumental lightweight like Reed present the award......what a friggin' Manhattan counter culture lamedog fraud Reed is...to this day, he's done nothing of any note...the harbinger of the current odious culture of celebrity......

lynnwemrick 10 months ago
@aarfeld : because he's considered an artistic lightweight, promoted well beyond his artistic station to present such an award.......Lou Reed..what a fucking lightweight he is..what has he actually done...name one one thing he's achieved artistically.......pewkworthy
kevinherbert 10 months ago
@kevinherbert: He's one of the progenitors of Punk a style of which, whether you like it or not, was extremely important and influential in the history of Rock. He's written a number of songs that are considered classics and influenced the careers of many who followed him.
aarfeld 10 months ago
@aarfeld : the only influence Reed has had on anything is to provide a target for those who believe art deserves better than pretence & slick marketing. Punk was a small and an important movement for the gr8 minority of those globally who found it attractive. Reed is a confection of the Manhattan school of art bullshit, which carves out its claimed relevance by producing nothing of artisitic merit. I can shit on a blanket & call it motion art.....Reed hasn't himself produced anything...nothing

Why does Lou Reed get so many boos?
whitedwarf13 11 months ago
@whitedwarf13
Both their bands shared the budget of the same recording company (forgot which) back in the late 60s, so their bands quickly became rivals, and they started calling each other names publically. You can look this up.

zappa would have never accepted this award,shameful..and shame on his family too..they are selling his name..and nothing else
stojanovich 1 year ago 10
@stojanovich
Generally, the families of people like Frank need to get the notoriety for him because they want his name to be well remembered. Perhaps his music will be listened to more often because he is honored. That's what these awards should be for, right?
mickyhikes 1 year ago
@mickyhikes these awards represent and mean nothing..frank didn't want to be awarded or recognized when he was still with us let alone now whene he is gone,he just wanted to be heard..as he said in the video "I don't care" and he is right,he lives on in the herts of his fans and they will surely remember him as long as they live..there is no need for this award,as I said..it's useless
stojanovich 1 year ago 20
@stojanovich you are wrong! This is not about how many records or tapes or cds sold. This is not about marketing or anything to do with the "BIZ". Frank wanted people to hear his music . This could have helped. Just because he did not REQUIRE acceptance in the way that many players do doesn't mean he didn't like it when we were able, somehow, to let him know how much we loved and respected him.
annerackham 1 year ago
@stojanovich if u make a statement like that you obviously dont know who frank zappa was. Zappa was a decent guy but he was also a business man
3star2nr 9 months ago
@3star2nr no,YOU obviously don't know who frank zappa was...business man???what are you talking about?..his family is slowly making a BRAND out of his name..and you tell me that is not shameful and disgusting?...
stojanovich 9 months ago
@stojanovich its not disgusting ar all you think zappa was against branding and selling himself?
3star2nr 9 months ago
@stojanovich Read a biography of Zappa sometime. He was a strict business man, just not in terms of the direction and creativity of his music.

Lou Reed?

There was friction simply because they both wanted the accolade of producing the first 'underground' album.Admittedly their genres are far apart but I'm sure all the antipathy had long since expired.I love them both,or at least the stuff they did in the 60's and early 70's.

didn't the velvets and the mothers hate each other?
philipperholland 1 year ago
@philipperholland
