Hey, am I allowed to enjoy Doobie Brothers pre Michael, during Michael and after Michael?
Because I love the whole lot. It is pointless to compare these eras, they have differences and similarities. The overall result is that we have so much more of so much diversity.
Sorry if I step on anyones toes, just that I'm an old school rocker. Just never cared for jazz, r&b, soul. All I meant was he slowed the beat & it just didn't set will with a bunch of us rockers. I only play the "pre MM " music, because to me, it rocks and flowed just fine for the style of music I play. To all of you whp like MM, fine, just I love the pre MM sound.
The Doobies were just a 3 chord garage band till MM joined them, he brought their music to a new maturity, they all played & sang much better after he joined.
Instead of being relegatated to the discount bin they had several hit albums after he joined. Early fans may not have like the change but without him they would have been playing VFW halls.
@SuperStig23 Not true. I'm not a MM hater, and loved what he brought to the band, but he was overused and exposed for a time. If you really think they were a 3 chord garage band, then you're being dismissive without knowing what you're talking about.
Sorry, in retropect you are right, the Doobies were much more than a Garage Band, I was trying to make a point & got carried away :) , MM really changed the direction of the band, I know this upset a lot of people but they were getting kinda tired by the time he joined. The fact that they adapted their style so well is a testament to their musicianship, there is still some real good rip-ass guitar works on some of the tracks.
@zaksdad08 i must respectfully disagree. The Doobie Brothers covered all bases with music to suit all tastes. enter McDonald, now they can include soul/r&b/jazz. Not to mention alot of his songs did bring in even more hits.
My first ever concert was when I was 17 and it was Hall & Oates and Michael McDonald. I'm 24 now so it wasn't too long ago. He still sounds amazing today. When he sang "What A Fool Believes" my favorite song ever, I teared up. It was great. Hall and Oates sounded amazing too. Awesome concert. I love Michael's voice.
I really appreciate the chord listings on this video. I'm a composition/performance major at WSU and I'm really studying how chord structures go together to form a piece, including with old favorites. I've always loved Mr. McD and the jazzy feel his groups impart to their music. It's nice to see real musicianship instead of an electronic box generating most of the "instruments" and sounds. When I start seriously writing and recording music, I intend to have as many real instruments as possible.
It just doesn't get any better than this in music. I've seen Michael McDonald perform for about a few hundred of us at a NAMM show put on by Yamaha.. He brings the same level of intensity/emotion and the same quality of musicians to these very small audiences as well. It was an awesome experience. He is so insanely talented!
Hmmm...Michael McDonald knows he has a sexy voice. And OMG the musicianship in this one piece supercedes anything that has been released in the past 5 years and especially what is being played on the radio today. For me the keys in this song are hypnotic... it takes you to place of way back when...when real music was authenticated not duplicated...
@TheTranslator100 Did some research and learned that Skylark had a stroke and is recovering. In a message to his fans he talked about being eager to return to the group-that was in 2010. (All I know is what I researched online.) He was (and I hope will be) a key part of the group. I missed seeing him (I didn't know what his name was, but I remember him from the original group). The group is awesome anyway, but it will be good to have him back!
Saw the Doobies in concert in Henderson, near Las Vegas. Wow! They brought down the house!!! They have not skipped a beat. Their new CD is off the hook. It's called World Gone Crazy. I think one of the songs is on YouTube. Check it out. These guys are just the best group ever.
Wow, is Skylar (bass player) in the CD?1? I remember Skylar (or Skylark, whatever people call the dude) when he used to play in a local club in Monterey with the Roger Eddy band - a very popular contemporary Jazz group in the Monterey area...
Saw them at Sunset Station (Las Vegas) on June 17, and they drove the huge crowd wild - with or without Michael McDonald, they are true musicians and have not lost ANYthing over time - if anything, they've just gotten better! They have a new CD/DVD out that rocks - 2011! Give it a listen!
One of my great Doobie favorites! I'm always amazed by the musical talent of this band. I wish they'll find the time to hold a concert tour in the Philippines in the future by timrimas.
You should just have a look of those chords "Cmaj7(+13); Cmaj13 ; G 7 sus" show this to some today's music "musician" and he/she will ask you if that is some pc code. :D

Hey dootsmasta, just following your chords, which is a great addition to a great song!... but I noticed that the intro is a little different... this is what I hear:
With all very due respect i wish he stuck to the original vocal melody especialy in that fantastic bridge harmonies were way lower but ok and id love to hear the real rhodes mike[keyboard] my favourite song so im being fussy check out the 1977 video
He had this soulful voice at age 15 back in St Louis. His great success could not have happened to a nicer guy. And his voice will always take me back to my youth. --a friend from The Castaway.
Michael makes me wet my pants every time he sings. SMDH I mean that in the good way. His eyes still make me melt. They will need to get the jaws of life to detach me from hugging him to death. lol
To LadyRBlues......The Doobie Brothers are alive and well. They just did a concert in Chicago this year.In fact this video is posted on Youtube. They will be releasing there latest album in 10 years on September 28,2010.We have lost a few members of the band over the years, but Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons are doing well.Don't these guys ever age???Thankd for posting this video.
You gotta respect Tom Johnston for sharing the role of lead singer with McDonald. Tom was, after all, the original lead before he was essentially replaced. It's also funny how the band dresses like its still '75 except McDonald...
God I love you Mike. May God Bless your 78 year-old butt...or however old that one nut thought you were....much love....Greetings from John Daly land....
so hope he tours the UK again, gutted I missing last year when he toured with Al Green. What an amazing voice.

Your analogy most likely pertains to today's RAPPERS & HIP-HOPPERS; the uneducated young urban Blacks (or Whites for that matter) who basically recite half-baked poetry and can't sing a lick.
Despite their long hair and drugged-out appearance, many of today's musicians (Malmsteen, Petrucci, Govan, et.al) are well versed in music theory and have attended well respected schools of music, and that dosen't include the school of hard knocks...

They will need to get the jaws of life to detach me from hugging him to death. lol

You gotta respect Tom Johnston for sharing the role of lead singer with McDonald. Tom was, after all, the original lead before he was essentially replaced. It's also funny how the band dresses like its still '75 except McDonald...

I do not possess the ability to criticize this musical masterpiece. Apparently 10 people have this rare ability.
