The tradition of the upper class, was meant to be a status symbol that their wives shouldn't/couldnt work and that the husband was wealthy enough to support her. This spread and soon many girls, poor or rich engaged in the pratice and men (or mostly their parents) would only select girls with desirable small feet as suitable wives.

It remind me of high heels. There are clear similarities between high heels and their foot. I think today we wear high heels, while their foot were the heels. I feel the pain for these women. I can imagine how painful it was!! How those women could walk, run, or do other simple stuff??I don't like it, but I guess beauty is question of perspective. Today big lips full of collagen, cats eyes, big breast implant... are sexy but I don't like that either, just a question of perspective.

@cmwen Yeah but this beauty wasnt exactly a choice for chinese women, it was often a neccesity for girls to ensure an arranged marriage for their future husbands. The tradition of the upper class, was meant to be a status symbol that their wives shouldn't/couldnt work and that the husband was wealthy enough to support her. This spread and soon many girls, poor or rich engaged in the pratice and men (or mostly their parents) would only select girls with desirable small feet as suitable wives.

@cmwen It's not really a question of perspective at all. Foot binding was cruel child torture. People *choose* to have plastic surgery and not everyone does it to please a man either. I don't feel that such things can be compared, because with foot binding we're talking about a custom that was forced upon women. It was a society where women had no rights and could not earn their own money. They had to use food binding in hopes of being married to wealth and eventually it was law to foot bind.

In the US, women are allowed to choose what beauty means for them. This was not an option for these Chinese girls.

Women should find a way to be secure enough to not dictate their choices on the wants and desires of shallow men, therefore it shouldn't be the man's fault but the woman's. Women should have more sense than that and many of them do, because they don't necessarily want plastic surgery to please a man, and others don't want it at all.

It's not always about pleasing someone else and it annoys me that people always assume that. Meanwhile, women are often in competition with other women, so blame cannot all be placed on men. And many of the women I see in the media don't have large chests at all and they're considered very beautiful by men. It's not so black and white, not everyone thinks the same.

I agree with many of the things you've said, it's just that I get a bit defensive because I know of people who've had cosmetic surgery and it wasn't a big deal. Sometimes it's not even that noticeable to others but it makes the individual feel better about themselves, and I don't see anything wrong with that. I mean, we only have one life to live, so it makes since that people would want to look they way they want.

It wsa usually a sister or a professional who performed it, as it was thought a mother would give in to her child's cries and thus not bandage them tight enough and thus not reach the desired size.
