Nice shot of the Newfoundland Memorial around 6:00. About 900 men strong went over the top on 1 July 1916, about 150 would come back physically unscathed. Incomprehensible.
The First World War deserves so much more attention than it gets. Always standing in the shadow of WW2. They should be equally important lessons for the sake of humanity.
The Germans lost more men than the British did in the battle of the Somme. The aggressors never recovered from it.
The real iron is that 24 years later they were at it again! If you want to blame anyone for the bloody mess that was the first half of the 20th Century, try pointing your accusing finger at Prussian militarism, not the Scottish General who had to try to deal with it. How else was he to liberate Belgium? Or perhaps we should have let the Germans keep it ...
Haig was inept, but so was the German Crown Prince who was commanding on the other side. The machine gun was the high tech weapon of that age. The carnage is still unbelievable today. It toppled 3 Empires. Unbelievable carnage. And still there are those that glorify war. I shake my head.

Absolute insanity..nothing less. One British soldier shot at dawn for cowardice had been over the top 13 times before and refused the last time as the line of soldiers in front of him fell dead as bullets came over like hailstones..he said 'For Gods sake give us a chance'..he was disarmed arrested and shot a week later...disgraceful..what would my generation have done I wonder...The general 'Earl Haigh' was a callous murdering bastard who threw away thousands of lives for little or no gain.
when i search for ww1, i only watch videos from the british, french and and freanch piont of view.have you ever seen something like this on the german side?no for sure. it's very sad, because in this war weren't good or bad sites...
never forget the victims on all countries.
i hope in the nearly future germans and frenchs can honor together their grand and great grand fathers nd in hand, that their souls can shake their hands earch other.
I would suggest you read "All quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. Its an excellent book, it completely changed my view on wars in general.
Right. You may also read Soljhenitsyn's "August' 14": One of the greatest war books ever. On war and on humanity.
As for Germans and French honoring together their grand-fathers hand in hand, we have been doing that for ages now starting with Alsatians and Lorrains who fought on both sides. Remember Mitterrand & Helmut Kohl at Verdun in 1984 !
the belgians whore beatin because the batlefield was on our turf not in france. or smal country was flat bomed!!! we had more soldiers in ww1 than america has now. did you know? and tha most commanders spoke frensh and the belgium soldiers talk dutch so they get orders they didn understand and became prey and beatin
In WWI, the Belgian Army fought very bravely and tenaciously, despite old equipment, and were aided by the population which sabotaged things like German field telephone cables. They delayed the German advance into France by a week and ruined the von Schliefen Plan, because France was not defeated. This eventually lead to Germany''s defeat.
This is why Belgium now produces some of the best firearms systems in the world. After WWI, Belgium vowed it would not be caught with poor equipment again. Other countries did the same thing.
Germany wasnt defeat was just bankrupt in severe crisis and ruined it was never invaded but was forced to sing a armistice favorble to the tree major allied powers
that is one classy lady at 2:25 remembering the unknown, my hat is off to her. Pure Class! God bless all the passed on soldiers, the way they died was horrific.
My great grandpa fought in WWI. I was never alive to hear his stories but he told my grandpa and they he told me. Very sad. He was shot by a german MG in the arm but he was fine.
omg i've seen so many assholes. germany soldiers are not evil IT WAS ATOLF HITLER!!
hitler maked 10 years old kids fight does it mean thad they are evil? NO!!!!! now go fuck yourself if u think they are evil. atolf hitler was a idiot bute many of the soldiers dint wanted to do this. its like 8% of the soldiers thad wanted this! nazis are evil not german soldiers thad needed to fight for nazist. they choose was join army or get killed!
Quite true. Hitler was a Corporal and had experienced being gassed with mustard gas as well. It was also rumored that his hatred of Jews had its beginnings with having a Jewish officer over him. Hitler's post WW1 experiences carried him through the putsch in the early 30's. Before that it was said that he had a rather promising career as an artist.
so tragic.People of the same blood slaughtering each other by the millions and now those same countries being taken over by darkies. What was it all for?
Thank you for showing this excellent video. It gives us a chance to feel respect for a generation who lost their lives for us. It is too bad that there are so many morons among the young who have absolutely no respect or gratitude. It is hearbreaking.
War is Hell. In 2006 I visited the site where a distant couson fell aged 16, at Loos in France. His name is on the wall but his body not identified. I thought, What a Kind thing that lady did, put a poppy on an unknown soldier's grave. but at Loos, most of the graves I saw had no name on them! I hope that Harry Patch and Henry Allingham did not live on for nothing, that today's youth will hear the lessons they told and seek peace in when they can in preference to war!
okie, i agree WWI was a very brutal and unecessary war. i do know that soldiers do what they're told. i was a soldier and my incidentally, ancesters came from france a long time ago. many called napoleon a butcher. i dunno. hate is an ugly emotion and every day a new human comes into the world. a nobel prize winner, a discoverer of a new cure for diseases. i've met some nice ppl and nasty ppl. i do know that a smile and a handshake go a long way with strangers. God Bless You.
Hey guys great video one of the best and great poem. well im going to pst this message on a lot of videos. how would you guys like to make a world war roleplay!!!. there can be countrys like usa, france, korea, japan, veitnam, russia, germany, canada, and you dont have to live in veitnam to run veitnam what do you guys say, a roleplay is where you be one of them act there life and *takes out grenade and thorws in bunker* sorta like that comment me i'd like to see what you guys think

Ha, I know one of the last pathfinders that dropped flares over dresdon and taught you Germans a lesson.
You deserved EVERYTHING you got.
I wish we'd let the Russians take the whole of germany, they taught you some lessons as well for the evil actions you took.
Germans used Chlorine gas, Germans used flame throwers, its only because the Germans always used dishonourable ways to kill people that the allies then used them on the Germans.
okiedokies I'm pretty sure Americans used flame throwers man, perhaps you shouldn't cast so much judgment,it was a complex war, their were good and bad people on both sides.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh yes the Huns were wonderful. They went through Belgium, pillaged all the art treasures, destroyed architectural monuments in France and continued the war when they were clearly beat.
These malakases have not changed their barbarian behaviour since the Roman times.
do you know how often the americans used flamethrowers against the japanese? in every fucking battle! and later nuking theme down, great civilzed behavior lol
So the Germans behaved in a civilized fashion in WW2. Where do we start?
1. Concentration Camps -Experiments on human prisoners
2. Holocaust - 6 million
3. Eastern Front - 15 million civilians
4. Albert Speer - 6 miliion slave prisoners murdered on forced labour.
5. Hitlers attempt to develope A- bomb terminated - Hard water facility in Norway destroyed because poor Adolph would have never used the A-bomb because he was sensitive to the needs of his opponents - wishful thinking.
@ellin40 "The Germans were not evil in WW I" ?? Surely not all of them. Yet if you consider that Germany declared war against Russia and France, and violated Belgium's neutrality, committed innumerable war crimes in occupied territories and at sea, Germany certainly deserved its punishement in 1918-1919. Just like other warmongers in the past.
@Fridomfry, they were all war-mongering, not just Germany. And Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, all committed atrocities against the natives of their respective colonies while Czarist Russia declared war of imperial ambition on Japan (and had their asses handed to them by the Japanese) while the masses lived in disease and poverty, uneducated, and in a status approximating serfdom. I'm not saying Germany were saints in WW I; they were just equally guilty with all the other war mongers
@ellin40, we are talking of WW I, not about colonization. From 1914 to 1945, the main warmonger in Europe was Germany, just as France had been the troublemaker from 1791 to 1870. The pacifist legend which claims that "all European countries were equally responsible for the Great War" doesn't hold against historical evidence. In 1914, everyone knew who was attacking, and who was just fighting for one's life.
@Fridomfry WW I takes place within colonization, an era that lasted until after WW II. And Germany is not the sole war monger, all imperial European powers are fighting for redistribution of markets and expanse of sphere of influence. The Brits and the French were duking it out in N. America since the 1700's. 30 Years War, Wars of Succession, Napoleonic Wars, should I go on? Millions of dead, mutilated, and displaced, not to mention PTSD that they did not even record back then.
@Fridomfry Millions of dead in the name of religion and the nation-state, and it was happening hundreds of years before WW I. The Prussian miltary elite that was running things in Germany had its equivalent in the landed gentry whose descendents were running things in England and were ordering disasters of the magnitute of Somme; or the impotent French, Foch, what a joke! He send hundreds of thousands of young against certain death and the machine guns.
@ellin40, you seem to be good at wandering around the point without focusing on it. You may as well recite the whole of human history, and keep saying commonplaces. Bye.
@ellin40 true, it was rivalies in all of Europe. Many disliked Germany for their grow of prestige. BUT! Germany and Austria were the ones who tried to invade France. But if that is "cruel and evil", well then every historical faction is evil....
Why do the british and so called empire nations seem to think they have the rights on honour and that the germans were the so called evil ones??
They were men like the allies who fought a war the same as the allies,
Let me remind you the british have caused nothing but hurt and war wherever ther greedy bigoted, racist empire spread to,,and as usual it was the working class men who died for the greed of a so called upperclass.these inbred royals and upperclass should have been the ones to fight
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you'd better fight your irish war elsewere. Because in ww1 the germans clearly were the evil ones. Although the chain reaction that followed was more complex
Ya total heroes 1/4 ruled by opression of Brithish Empire the germans were the evil ones you know that just for example 30 Milion Indians die for opression from the british? British are so arrogant!
Of course not but things like Allies Good and Axis bad should not happen none of sides were evil or good just humans figthing for different nations and ideologies atrocides are comited by both sides
In WW2 I guess you could say the German's were the naughty ones, or did I miss a meeting?
They also had a big hand in starting WW1 by supporting Austro-Hungary against Serbia and then the Germans declared war on Russia, France and neutral Belgium. This violated the Prussian-Belgian treaty that was supposed to respect Belgian Neutrality. Then the British and American's get involved.
Before you know it 8.5 million soldiers dead. Mankind is a bigotted, selfish, race not just the British.
@PATRICKEIRE Of all the signatures of remberance in all the many German cemetaries in France that I have visited most of them are written by the British, very few German and very few French.
@PATRICKEIRE I wouldn't mind but the only damn reason those German and English boys got sent to war was because it was an empire struggle over their royalty who were COUSINS.
@PATRICKEIRE that's why britain abolished the slave trade in 1807, years ahead of anyone else, why they developed limits to the king's power and the common law to protect the freedom of individuals?
@jonwvin That the German Emperor swore unconditional allegiance to Austria was a mistake. But the political environment that led to this was in part the making of the Entente. And for World War II, it's no question that the Germans started it, but Versailes and the policy of "Appeasement" prepared the ground. The majority of the blame is on the Germans, but don't make the mistake to claim that the British, Russians, and French were free of blame.
@jonwvin the illuminati started and always start every war! elites, rothschilds, solvay, bronfmanns, rockerfellers, prescott bush, georges grandad funded adolf hitler! they always invest their money in wars and make a fortune out of it! at the expense of young mens lives,in the flower of youth! we dont go to war, they create them first, then send us to kill maim and drop bombs on women and kids, and thats ok? thou shalt not kill?out the window when it suits!you kill, jail,in god we trust? which god?

Complete waste of resources and human creativity. To this day , the world still not learned these lessons from the past. The human race is truly retarded.
I read a book about ww1 that started by saying World War 1 was war that really didn't have to happen, and World War 2 was a direct result of World War 1. What a waste!
Thank you for your reply. If you want to learn more about WW1 write to me directly. I was fortunate enough to have a friend during the 70's who I went hunting with in Canada who seved in the Canadian Army during WW1. I was walking shoulder to shoulder with a piece of living history. Not to discount your efforts, its good to see intelligent people like you studying and reading on such matters.
That's very true. WW2 was a result of WW1. Hitler rose to power partly because of the economic climate caused by WW1. I think it helped shape the person he was and his ideologies. It's fascinating stuff.
nice one teebee.. ihave justreturned from there, iwentwith legertravel i recommend this to everone... our guide was a bloke called keith and he was brilliant...
I think you're right... I've read some notes on historical websites regarding Haig and some other British generals (Rawlinson if I recall correctly) and Robert Nivelle for the French Army as well as Luddendorf for the German Army as the greatest butcherers in WWI...
What a carnage in Verdun, Somme, Passchendaele, etc...
It makes sense... , even though I really like History as a very complex and rich subject, it makes me feel sad to watch on Youtube those many videos about thousands of young British soldiers dying the first day of the Battle of the Somme... That battle, was an extremely tragic waste of lives...
Its a shame we all remember the bungler and stupid butcher Douglas Haig. I often go to the Somme and just sit misty eyed at a gravestone of a young man and picture him dying in the mud. All alone while his general was nice and warm in a smoking room getting plonked on whiskey.
If you read the latest book on Haig by P.J.Phillips, you can easily see what a stupid fool he was. Right from OTC at Sandhurst to his death from liver cirhossis. He was instrumental in the bungled retreat at Mons and the fiasco at Loos where he gassed his own men.
There were also rumors he had an affair with a man at Oxford where he failed to get a degree.
Rawlinson was Haig's scapegoat for the Somme blood bath. Haig went on to butcher another 400,000 boys while Rawly was on some obscure post in Ireland.
The over 300 war cemeteries are an indictment to the stupid and heartless killer, Earl Douglas Haig. May his soul be tormented through eternity.
mrhomer, I suppose many of us ask themselves the same question: "When we look at the country today, was it all really worth it?" Spending these treasures of courage and dedication, just to end up with a greasy consuming society
Yet when we travel in 1900, for example (which is easy, by reading books and newspapers of that time), they didn't have a much better opinion of their own age.
As we can't change the past, it belongs to us to be up to their sacrifice.
what a huge fukkin total mess..! utter chaos confusion and mayhem...so two scared 19 year olds get shot for desertion...when they were probably petrified from shellshock..! god bless the fukking queen...
During the first day of the battle of the Somme the British suffered 50.000 casualties of wich some 20.000 killed...and that operation kept goin for months.
I don't believe that anybody understands the horror of this war, who is alive today. It was all a lie, propaganda. Real life if Germany had won what would have happened France would have lost some land and Britain some colonies. What a waste of life, all to support Serbia's right to murder Austrian royalty? The US after 911 went after terrorist in exactly the same way and so should everybody else.
Its amazing how much blood was shed over so little land. Not that land is really worth to many lives in the first place but you are right it was such a small area. On the western front gains of yards were measured in thousands of dead. It is sad that WW1 is largely ignored. The lives lost were no less important than in others. And yet it is overlooked. We have so much to learn from that war. It should be a lesson to all what entangling alliances can cost in human lives.
Ah the Somme, God's way of ridding Ireland of it's traitors, who thought it better to kill Germans for Irish freedom instead of the English who terrorised us for centuries.
We will not forget! the youth of today does not forget the sacrifice those soldiers made during the Great War! Young and old... try to visit Tynecot Cemetary or the Meningate in Ypres, Vladslo and Langemark... here lie burried the real heroes! Remember them
i think only elderly watch this here in belgium ... it's not that we don't respect the death ... but we all know now that it was all set up ... leaders making war and the poor people had to fight for nothing ... great war they say ... there ws nothing great about it ... it was sad!
Well clearly you are mistaken, it has been 90 years but the fact that the last post is still bein bugled after all that time by volunteers is proof that Ypres has not forgotten and i think most people have respect for what that generation sacrificed
The only time there's a rather big crowd is on Armistisce Day.
Except, like I said, older people whose father or grandfather fought in the war. Hell, kids these days don't even know a battle at The Somme took place.
You are quite wrong I'm afraid. I don't know whether you have ever been to the Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, but I was there on just a weekday evening last February. Many young people, many of whom were British school children assembled from their schools, wreaths in hand and laid them there. I would say there were approximately 2-300 people paying their respects. Perhaps you would like to go and pay yours?
In that case, there is something sadly lacking in a country's education system and culture, if its schoolchildren don't know how many hundreds of thousands of men from another unrelated country died, whilst bailing them out of occupation twice in one century. How very, very sad!
I liked this video because of the Assassin's Creed trailer at the beginning

Absolute insanity..nothing less. One British soldier shot at dawn for cowardice had been over the top 13 times before and refused the last time as the line of soldiers in front of him fell dead as bullets came over like hailstones..he said 'For Gods sake give us a chance'..he was disarmed arrested and shot a week later...disgraceful..what would my generation have done I wonder...The general 'Earl Haigh' was a callous murdering bastard who threw away thousands of lives for little or no gain.

Germans used Chlorine gas, Germans used flame throwers, its only because the Germans always used dishonourable ways to kill people that the allies then used them on the Germans.

Fridomfry 1 year ago
@Fridomfry, they were all war-mongering, not just Germany. And Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, all committed atrocities against the natives of their respective colonies while Czarist Russia declared war of imperial ambition on Japan (and had their asses handed to them by the Japanese) while the masses lived in disease and poverty, uneducated, and in a status approximating serfdom. I'm not saying Germany were saints in WW I; they were just equally guilty with all the other war mongers
ellin40 1 year ago
@ellin40, we are talking of WW I, not about colonization. From 1914 to 1945, the main warmonger in Europe was Germany, just as France had been the troublemaker from 1791 to 1870. The pacifist legend which claims that "all European countries were equally responsible for the Great War" doesn't hold against historical evidence. In 1914, everyone knew who was attacking, and who was just fighting for one's life.
Fridomfry 1 year ago
@Fridomfry WW I takes place within colonization, an era that lasted until after WW II. And Germany is not the sole war monger, all imperial European powers are fighting for redistribution of markets and expanse of sphere of influence. The Brits and the French were duking it out in N. America since the 1700's. 30 Years War, Wars of Succession, Napoleonic Wars, should I go on? Millions of dead, mutilated, and displaced, not to mention PTSD that they did not even record back then.
ellin40 1 year ago
@Fridomfry Millions of dead in the name of religion and the nation-state, and it was happening hundreds of years before WW I. The Prussian miltary elite that was running things in Germany had its equivalent in the landed gentry whose descendents were running things in England and were ordering disasters of the magnitute of Somme; or the impotent French, Foch, what a joke! He send hundreds of thousands of young against certain death and the machine guns.

What a carnage in Verdun, Somme, Passchendaele, etc...
MpLMx 2 years ago
Haig was a whiskey swilling drunk who slaughtered milions of innocent young boys.
His statue in London should be melted down to be remade into medals for the men shot at dawn.
Field Marshal Douglas Haig. History's greatest mass murderer.
waffenlandser 2 years ago
It makes sense... , even though I really like History as a very complex and rich subject, it makes me feel sad to watch on Youtube those many videos about thousands of young British soldiers dying the first day of the Battle of the Somme... That battle, was an extremely tragic waste of lives...
MpLMx 2 years ago
Its a shame we all remember the bungler and stupid butcher Douglas Haig. I often go to the Somme and just sit misty eyed at a gravestone of a young man and picture him dying in the mud. All alone while his general was nice and warm in a smoking room getting plonked on whiskey.
waffenlandser 2 years ago
If you read the latest book on Haig by P.J.Phillips, you can easily see what a stupid fool he was. Right from OTC at Sandhurst to his death from liver cirhossis. He was instrumental in the bungled retreat at Mons and the fiasco at Loos where he gassed his own men.
There were also rumors he had an affair with a man at Oxford where he failed to get a degree.
waffenlandser 2 years ago
Rawlinson was Haig's scapegoat for the Somme blood bath. Haig went on to butcher another 400,000 boys while Rawly was on some obscure post in Ireland.
The over 300 war cemeteries are an indictment to the stupid and heartless killer, Earl Douglas Haig. May his soul be tormented through eternity.

It is nice to see that people still have respect whatever thier age.
My Great, Great Grandfather was a Lieutenant Colone in lhe King's Royal Rifle Corps
He fought proudly and was killed in battle at the age of 30, at Marteville, France 1918He recieved the VC & the MC medal for his actions
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful and interesting video. But I do have one question.
Just look at the country today !
Was it all really worth it?
Respect to all.
Thanks for sharing
mrhomerbojangles 3 years ago 2
mrhomer, I suppose many of us ask themselves the same question: "When we look at the country today, was it all really worth it?" Spending these treasures of courage and dedication, just to end up with a greasy consuming society
Yet when we travel in 1900, for example (which is easy, by reading books and newspapers of that time), they didn't have a much better opinion of their own age.
As we can't change the past, it belongs to us to be up to their sacrifice.

I don't believe that anybody understands the horror of this war, who is alive today. It was all a lie, propaganda. Real life if Germany had won what would have happened France would have lost some land and Britain some colonies. What a waste of life, all to support Serbia's right to murder Austrian royalty? The US after 911 went after terrorist in exactly the same way and so should everybody else.
wenddiver 3 years ago
Its amazing how much blood was shed over so little land. Not that land is really worth to many lives in the first place but you are right it was such a small area. On the western front gains of yards were measured in thousands of dead. It is sad that WW1 is largely ignored. The lives lost were no less important than in others. And yet it is overlooked. We have so much to learn from that war. It should be a lesson to all what entangling alliances can cost in human lives.

Jelle1880 3 years ago

Barre576 3 years ago
And how many people attend the Last Post ?
The only time there's a rather big crowd is on Armistisce Day.
Except, like I said, older people whose father or grandfather fought in the war. Hell, kids these days don't even know a battle at The Somme took place.
Jelle1880 3 years ago
You are quite wrong I'm afraid. I don't know whether you have ever been to the Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, but I was there on just a weekday evening last February. Many young people, many of whom were British school children assembled from their schools, wreaths in hand and laid them there. I would say there were approximately 2-300 people paying their respects. Perhaps you would like to go and pay yours?
FABVOICE 2 years ago
Nice of you to try and ridicule me, but I have been there on several occasions.
And I was talking about Belgian kids, hardly any of them know of what happened there. I am well aware of the schooltrips from British schools.
Jelle1880 2 years ago
In that case, there is something sadly lacking in a country's education system and culture, if its schoolchildren don't know how many hundreds of thousands of men from another unrelated country died, whilst bailing them out of occupation twice in one century. How very, very sad!
FABVOICE 2 years ago
Well, they sort of get it in school, but much more emphasis is put on World War II and medieval stuff.
