I am European or sort of. I have been in the favelas of Rio. I found the people to be very friendly and hospitable just trying to get on with things as everyone else. my parents and I left brasil in 1990 after my uncle was murdered in a favela by the police this squads had been active (though not to that degree) for decades before these public reports surfaced.

Wait till you see the rich Brazil. As someone's wealth grows, their skin will start to become whiter. Thats because the slums are old as the republic, they were born with the abolition of slavery at the end of the Brazilian Empire. The government freed them, but nor the society nor the government never cared about giving a way for those people live with respect within society.
The result is our very own undeclared apartheid.
