  • I just spent a week up there sking. Now I know I have to visit in the Summer when it's warm!!!

  • There is a town mentioned on all the maps of Keewenaw called "Nepco Camp Number 7"; it looks like it is off Route 41 near Phoenix a few miles out into the woods off a snowmobile trail. Ever heard of it?

  • @phicampiii I've never heard of it, but we may need to look for it when we're up there next year. Do you have any more information on it? I would appreciate anything you could share.

  • I'm from Western Australia, and have been observing on YouTube the slow decline of Detroit. I didn't realise it was a statewide problem. Where I'm from, this state is primarily responsible for why the Australian Dollar is presently worth $1.07 US. You name it, someon is digging it up or refining it here.

Some forward thinking politicians could have easily arrested the slide by preserving a lot of these buildings for tourism. Thes old ghost towns look like a nice place for a holiday

  • Cool video - we're featuring it today on Absolute Michigan (dotcom)!

  • Great Vid, I hit subscribe on teh second note of Division Bell

  • A Ghost Town Gay Bar? Kinky!

  • I read an ad somewhere up there "go straight to the Gay Bar : clever...:)

  • Grew up in some of those towns...Copper City, Mohawk, Lake Linden...my Grandma was born in Ahmeek.

  • Yah, it sounds like you answered the "ghost town" thing already so I won't go there. Maybe we should promote the term "Zombie Town" since many of our towns up here show movement but are not really alive anymore, eh? Nice vid with decent photog and good editing.

  • Nice pictures! I see that the classification of Ahmeek as a ghost town is a matter of some controversy. I would have to agree that it is not a ghost town; yes, it has declined significantly from its peak, but I have never seen any tourist literature or guides describe it as a "ghost town." And as someone who spent a couple of summers with her grandfather in Ahmeek, I must say that it's quite a lovely little place. :)

  • Keweenaw Brewery rules!

  • I live in Quincy Illinois and would love to visit some of theese places. Although I like friendly folks and enjoy a cold one now and then, on a warm summer day if'n I was real parched and a cold brewski sounded great I may have reservations about visiting the bar. I could never let my buds know that I visited the Gay Bar. Sorry but I'd never live that one down with a name like that. LOL

  • its not all that bad, a good place and food too, old styles cold in the can!

  • at 1:18 that building is like two mins from my cousins house

  • my cousin lives there and i went to visit him i went four weeling and whent the quincy mine........i wish i lived there

  • Thank you for this video. I love Copper Harbor and the surrounding area. I try to get up there once a year and never even thought about these old towns. They actually fasinate me. Im surprised that alot of those ornate buildings still stand. There is alot of history in the U.P. Its too bad that time is washing it away.

How often do you get up to Keweenaw, or do you live in that area?

  • This was my second trip there (first was in 1970). My wife had never been there, so I wanted her to see how magical it is up there. She was not disappointed.

We were planning a return this year, but our son's wedding got re-scheduled to our planned vacation week. We hope to return again in 2010.

  • For one who is so careful of not giving offense, I am sorry to inform you that "chill out" is an offensive phrase.

  • Wow, you seem to be quite sensitive. If "chill out" offends you, then there is no point in even offering an apology -- that might hurt your feelings, too.

Rather than sit there and get upset, why not read the comments to realize that everyone appreciates the beauty and friendly atmosphere up there?

  • Some nice pics, but false labels. Mohawk and Ahmeek, to name two, are NOT ghost towns---as your pics clearly indicate. Take care of governmental definitions of GHOST---or you may soon be calling Michigan a ghost state!

  • As I've written before, I don't decide what town gets classified as "ghost towns". I've found numerous sources that classify these towns as "ghost" based on population loss over a specific period of time combined with the current population as a percentage of the highest historical population.

Michigan is fast on the way to becoming a "ghost state" -- but our population and job loss is another (more political) discussion.

Chill out, though -- I meant no offense.

  • @firechasers ghost towns are not all empty.population must be below a certian number but not totall vacant.

  • I just love the Keweenaw! I could easily live there but I don't think my wife would want to. I think it would be a great place to raise a family. We currently live in Grayling and its cool but not as cool as the KEWEENAW!

  • I would love to live there. I think I could probably talk my wife into it, but the real problem would be finding a job. I'm a firefighter and the towns there are too small to support full-time fire departments.

  • Love the video! I love abandoned sights. I visit many! This seems like an area I would love to tread! Who does the song by the way?

  • That's Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell".

  • yeah sorry i didnt watch that other video. i saw it. yall do any fishing up here or do you just do the exploring side of things?

  • We didn't do any fishing, but we did kayak on the Ontanogan River. We also did some off-roading, but most of the time was spent investigating old mines and towns from the mining era. I hadn't been to Keewenaw since 1970 and my wife had never been, so it was a wonderful experience to see so many fantastic sites and meet so many friendly people (nobody was rude). You are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and friendly place. We can hardly wait to get back up there (probably Summer 2010).

  • By the way yall forgot one very important town up there. its called delaware. they have the delaware mine where they still do tours and everything. next time your up go check it out

  • We included some pictures from our tour of Delaware in the "Abandoned Copper Mines" video that we posted. Delaware was really cool. We stopped by the mine where they do the tours, but also visit the remains of other buildings in Delaware. The history up there is incredible.

  • there are only a few people who know about that little town. its funny when you tell them the story of how you were up in the U.P. in the Gay bar. i have property up in lac la belle and i go up there every summer except i havent made it up this year yet. and i have seen all these buildings and all these places. Watching this video made me miss it that much more. thank you for posting! look forward to more from you guys!

  • i just seen a ghost...any reccomendations on what i should do? i called ghost busters but ther number is dis-connected. ;-) I LOVE MICHIGAN !!! IM FROM CALUMET. IT ROCKS !!

  • Calumet is an absolutely awesome town. We were amazed by the beauty of all the old buildings as well as the work being done in the town to restore the town to its earlier glory. The residents we met were all very nice, too. You are extremely lucky to live there. We can hardly wait to return.

  • none of these are ghost towns you dumbass

    ppl live there

people like you piss me off

  • Actually, all of these towns are officially recognized as ghost towns. There are criteria to be met and the groups that analyze the criteria have determined these to be ghost towns. Don't blame me, I just visited and thought I would share the beautiful things I saw.

One more observation: I was very impressed with how friendly and nice the people are in the U.P. -- obviously we didn't meet you.

Don't forget to slip that Prozac in your Wheaties tomorrow morning!

  • xD Gah these bring back great memories of the summer, especially since its winter at the moment lol great videos!!! I gotta subscribe.

  • Ok , Gay may have only 12 year round residents but still no Ghost town.

  • I don't know how many of the 12 year-round residents made up the half-dozen or so people who were in the bar when we were there, but I will say they were very friendly. They made us feel right at home -- including the little joke they played on my wife. Very nice people in Gay.

  • Since when is Ahmeek a ghost town??

  • I don't make the designations. There is actually some "official" criteria regarding what constitutes a ghost town. It's based on the current population as a percentage of its peak population and takes rate of decline into account.

  • Fair, See I live in the village of Mohawk so I know people in Ahmeek and Gay. A ghost town to me would be Detroit.

  • Please be certain that the week we spent in Keweenaw left us quite impressed with the people. We frequently strike up conversations with local people and we didn't meet anyone who wasn't very friendly and helpful.

As for Detroit, one of the suburbs IS designated a ghost town. In my mind, Detroit would give "ghost town" a bad name.

You are quite lucky to live in such a beautiful place. We can hardly wait to get back up there.

  • Cool video. I love the UP and its ghost towns. I can't wait until this Summer to get back up there and visit a few. Plus some 4 wheeling!

Do you hit the LP ghost towns at all?

  • It's a great vacation when you can visit the historic sites in the U.P. and combine it with 4-wheeling.

I haven't visited very many ghost towns in the Lower Peninsula. If you wouldn't mind giving me some recommendations (GPS coordinates would be a bonus) I would appreciate it. We would love to visit some ghost towns in the L.P. (closer to home).

  • greetings from upper michigan!

  • How lucky you are to live in such a beautiful place. My wife and I are so anxious to return. We're still hoping to get back in 2009, but family commitments may prevent it.

We were so pleased at the friendliness of the residents we met. Everyone was kind, helpful and willing to tell us about the area. You certainly live in a magical place.

  • you should see this little town of trout creek, plus, alot of the people here are very friendly, the towns are nice places, and its beautiful in the fall, but winters are pretty harsh, the snow just piles up, hope you enjoy the scenery and hospitality up here :D
