I was 5 or so the 1st time I heard this awesome tune...my big brother had the 45 and I would dance around having the greatest time. Now at the age of 47 while watching a British flick named "East is East" there it was! Double Barrel in a nightclub scene and I was so excited I had to look it up and here I am...still dancing around!
Heard this on Radio6 a couple of weeks ago, and said to one of the guys at work, I still have this on the original 45rmp single! And he looked at like WTF? X¬D
Memories of working the night shift in the spring and summer of 1971, with the radio blasting on the PA system in the warehouse and the store after it closed.
@bazpeeb so strange to think when I was at the gig on Tuesday that a lot of people would've been on my YT page to look at The Specials ..... Superb night wasn't it..... Wish there were two dates..!! I'd have been back.... Nite Klub and Stupid Marriage my faves :)
I was 5 years old when this song was in the charts, I can remember trying to copy Dave Barker's vocals everytime it was played. Such a great record to this day!
Epic. This came out about the same time as In the Summertime, I'm Gonna Run Away From You and Maggie May. I was a little Boot Boy down the youth club with a crush on a girl who wore knee length boots and a mini skirt. Unfortunately she fancied one of the youth workers who looked like MIck Robinson from Magpie; fucking Trog.
@tezzabanboy yeah this song and those similar were great to hear at the fairground on full blast along with the flashing lights and all the exciting sights and sounds of the fair at night time...
Stilkl get chills when I hear this song...and for some reason 1. when ever I get ahold of a coopy of ths song people ask to borrow it and I never see it again & 2. whenever I play this song on a juke box, really young (at least 18yo men-I'm a wee bit older) offer to buy me drinks and such...If I were a Super Hero, this woukd be my theme song! AHAHAHAHA!
i remember buying an album on trojan that had this and many other great songs, but i cant remember what it was called gave it to my kid brother and he says he lost it whats it worth now
@johnplinehan there's a shop in Islington , London called The Vinyl Countdown (Great name for an old record shop) if it's still in business they would offer serious money for a good copy of this.
im 19 and ive grown up with this music, now if anyone in the family says 'i' and pauses for a milisecond too long everyone else in the room shouts out 'am the magnificent!' lol
I played this and some mid 60's Manfredd Mann for a girlfriend of mine about ten years ago and she replied "You listen to some weird shit". I said "I know, that 'cause I have great taste". I love this tune.
Back in the summer of 1971, I used to take my stereo outside on the driveway everyday and blast this song as loud as it would go while a bunch of us neighborhood kids played basketball.
The neighbors quit talking to me after that summer.
I walked into town to buy this tune on 45 in 1971 when I was 11 years old, listened to the album and ended up buying that for 99 1/2 p. Liked it then, and I still like it now!!
Wow as good today as when I was 11. I had no idea they were black and had never heard of racism, now I am politically aware, the music today doesn't touch this. Fantastic.
when i was 12 this and Marc Bolan were the same thing...i didnt know what it was but it floated my boat,so i asked my mum to buy them for me..and she did....eh Em?
@northernsoulgroover Funny you should say that, reminds me of the same. I'm a US Army brat and from 1971-1973 my family lived in Mainz, Germany. Every summer there was a carnival behind the AYA building which was beside the housing we lived in. Double Barrel was one of the records played on the Bumper Car ride. :) Hell yeah!!!!! Those were some good ol' times!!!!!!
Amazing how a song or a piece of music can bring back memories in such accuracy and detail. Makes you smile in a kinda sad way when you realise those times are gone for good.
One of my all time favs...memories of being a toddler and jumping around around to this...Music to remind adults about the pure happiness of being a child...Well, this adult anyway!
Found this song from a thing on The One Show as this was the first record Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet bought. Very glad i saw it as this is a quailty track!
First time I ever heard this song, me and my buddies were window-peeking at a strip club called "The Twilight Zone". Since then I have always loved this song.
for the longest time i thought SPECIAL ED sampled this from The Biz Markie. Untill. my boss at the record store lent me his copy of the LP in 1989.... there is alot of breaks on the double barrel album..
