I have seen this and the treat is very real, more so for us visitors . The threat of extorsion and kidnapping if you travel into the wrong area at the wrong time. The problem is wide spread not just here but every where in the Philippines hiden weapons & non registered firearms are a very real threat. Stay near city major locations generally your ok, its a matter of who you know. I have found to travel into remote areas you can hire very very good armed security and at a very reasonable price.

@dumaznbum Late reply: I'm not advocating violence. I come from a military family & have been practicing martial arts ever since I got into grade school. That's 20 years now. Violence, if ever should be the last resort. The Philippines have an incredible homicidal rate, however they lack adequate statistics. But even without those, they still count as one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Less guns would work wonders in the region. One other problem of course is the colonial history.

China is bad example. If you take average death rate from 1950's (when Mao disarmed populace) to present you will see that its horrific. More than 20m (conservative low estimate) killed, mostly by the state. Genocide only occurs in places where the people have been disarmed.
