As is "association football" - known either as just "football" or "soccer" (which derives from "association") - which is also a form of football.

"American football" and "Australian Rules football" are also variant forms of football too.

There's nothing wrong nor stupid in referring to any of these as "football". It's just a difference of convention, nothing more.

But, basically, "association football" -> "assoc. football".

It can't be further abbreviated to "ass. football", without giving out the totally wrong impression. So, instead, the "a" was dropped, giving "soc", which colloquially became "socker" and then the spelling mutated to "soccer".

You are offside if you recieve the ball when standing beyond the last defender. That means when the ball is passed to you if anypart of your body that you can play the ball with, is past the opposite teams last man, you are offside.

You can only be offside in the oppositions half.
