I had the extreme pleasure of getting to see them at least twice back in the 70s. Theirs was the best concerts i have ever gone to. I still love them to this day. Makes me feel young.
hey man thanks for this...... im 32 and i discovered the moody blues when i was about 16 and it changed my view on what music means, and can deliver in feeling and message..... their music takes you to places in mind and body that no other band can...
I've been a Moodies fan since 'Nights" and have been to many concerts with my wife after we were married in 1971. That mellotron sound makes them not only unique but special. Now I have that same sound on my keyboards from a CD sample Mike Pinder did of his mellotron used for many of MB songs.
the moody blues arent in the hall of fame because they are too wholesome. If they were proponents of Trash culture like black sabbath or Rolling Stones then they would be in the Hall. Meat eating maggots like Metallica are in the Hall of famousness because they are demonic tattoed envious maggots. Will Aphrodities Child ever make the Hall of famousness? No. Even somebody like Uriah Heep wont make the Hall of famousness because their lyrics are too positive. QUIT EATING MEAT.
I'm sick of people saying DoFP was the first concept album. It wasn't.
Prog Rock never gets the proper treatment in the media, and it's really starting to annoy me. May as well not bring it up at all if you aren't going to cover it properly.
thank you, MoodiesFan, i had missed this one (don't know how!). a question: does anybody else see Justin's wife Marie in the dancing girl at 01:41? and were they together already in 1967?
Is it a British or a 'top of the pops' thing where these anouncers have to sound so condescending. Prattling on about Italian waiters? It's the Moody Blues, STFU!
Being a Mewbie (Moody Blues Newbie :p) I have to ask: What song are they playing right after John Lodge comments on the clothes? You know, the little clip with the go-go girl shakin' it up; sounds great whatever it is.
I've seen them in Amsterdam last two times and in London before that, they seem to be better and better each time. "English sunset" and "December snow" are realy great songs too. Thanx for posting this vid.
strange how they never managed a hit as big as go now.. no1 in 1964. i no they are not really a chart band but there in it for the money just the same. i suppose there finest hour was there first hit
Mike said it wasnt true that he couldnt take people climbing through windows to ask him the meaning of the cosmos he just didnt think octave was strong enough to tour with.
Just found this. Loved the cracks about Justin's hair. Never did get the hair - but he sure is handsome (probably more in the 80's than in the 60's). Don't get me wrong, Justin is my favorite - a god. Gee, The Moodies on mind altering drugs? Wow, never would have guessed (LOL). Yep, JH always looked "higher than a kite" but I love him anyway! The Moody Blues are still the best!
Great video! Not sure why Mike left; you get different answers. But good to see him involved with this documentary; he didn't seem to wish to have anything to do with the Moodies for years. Thanks for posting!
Mike Pinder left after making Octave, because he just couldn't deal with touring anymore. It was just too much for him, and his life. This is according to Ray Thomas, and Justin Hayward.
DO NOT REMOVE THIS, EVER! It had been on once before, and it cracked me up. Oh man... LSD? Nah, no way... LOL!!! Just watch Justin singing Tuesday Afternoon.
just great stuff! loved the bit about taking acid, and seeing mike pinder "now", and the fun with justin's hair. does anyone know why did mike leave the group? it's just a different sound w/o him...
I think it was because he was alot more involved with the Transcendental Meditation bit than the rest of the guys were. I think it proved to be too much. At least that is what I remember about it.
now I have a lot more respect for Michael Pinder now that I know he is a TMer. Speaking of Yoga and prog rock give Melting Euphoria and Ozric Tentacles a listen. they are unknown and underrated.
A better sound in my opinion but that's my opinion. Anyway, he left after getting back together with the band to record 'Octave' because he didn't want to tour. He expected to be involved in the recording of their next album and all their albums after that though not their tours but you can't have it both ways. Patrick Moraz was great though. I miss him, his sound and what he broughto the band far more.
moraz did bring a different feel to the band, i'll agree, but somehow the group didn't seem to coalesce around him as they had with pinder. i believe that growing up with a group does somehow afford communative venues others simply cannot approach: witness the number of hits under pinder's tenure vs. those under the technically superior moraz's turn at the wheel...and doesn't the announcer on this vid make you wanna join the nra?
I agree with you. There is no doubting Patrick's amazing keyboard skills(such as with yes)but he was more suited to them because of the complex way their music was structured. Mike may have been more into meditation etc, but you only have to look at the lyrics to 'Lost in a Lost World' from Seventh Soujourn to recognise just how aware he was of the reality around him. His songs and voice were an essential core part of the moodies identity and they were never quite as diverse after he left.
I agree so much, although I Love the old Moodies best they never cease to surprise me, out comes a new beautiful song such as December. But Mike definately was a powerful inspriation to the early Moodies and great in my opinion. Thanks so much for posting!

You don't get different answers. He didn't want to tour anymore. He had a life in California with a new wife and wanted to stay there.

He was simply tired of touring. Even after the split in '72, he just couldn't go on with the extensive tours.
