  • MAYNARD FURGESON! Enough said.

  • Impresive array of jazz greats!!

  • What year did this performance take place?

  • chuck mangione my musical idol

  • Might be the best band ever out together! Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy, Maynard, Herbie, and the beast, RON FUCKING CARTER!

  • Al Hirt looks like a Santa Klaus

  • I know it's not a competition, but damn, Dizzy sure did kick Chuck to the curb!

  • thanks for this wonderful vid

    congratulations !! ist a jewel....

    hugss...

  • great video of different jazz trumpeters/flugelhornists (not sure how to put it), along with a nice scat singer

  • what a great line up.... we how, we how, we how! so great to hear those different styles and personalities....

  • Don Cherry is the shit!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeaaaaaaaaaaaah Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiizzyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I always miss Don Cherry.

  • DAYum Sarah Vaughan plays scat trumpet better than these guys, ON THIS GIG.

I'm not sayin nothin. Just this time around, she kicks them's asses.

  • To say putting awesome players on stage and saying "go" doesn't work, just ask miles Davis how it worked. I would say it went rather well, and he was famous for just bringing sketches to the studio.

  • looks like a lame "all-star" concert. I don't think you get some fine music if you just put a lot of good musicians on a stage and let them play without a real concept.

  • Unfortunately Chuck is out of his element. I love his music, but his playing leaves a lot to be desired.

  • @SAAMIAM99 you are crazy

  • I didn't know that Oprah could wear a moo moo and scat at the samw time!

  • Quit stealing all my good lines, TeckEd

  • al hirt makes you sit up and say-- who is that-- such a strong ability......

  • Is this commercially available? I take it this is from an HBO special. Is it all like this? I would LOVE to get my hands on this.

  • is this the same night that Maynard sang I Can't Get Started with Al Hirt playin the horn?

  • If anyone watching this doesn't know a lot about music, or even about jazz....what you're watching would be the equivalent of Abraham, Moses, Elijah, Jacob and the Maccabees showing up at a bar mitzvah :P

  • my god!! what a band... Ron Carter on bass... Herbie on the piano?

    psss....

most of the solo, suck... it's not a piece to solo the 'Take the A Train", but...

musicality and value, i bow in front of you!

  • Just Listen to the Virtuosity of Al Hirt.....!!!!

  • AMen

  • GO CHUCK!!!!!!!!

  • thankyou for posting this great session

  • dude what the fuck? Mangione owned than

  • hes the shit...its like so typical that he would play so mellow

  • A pocket trumpet..? lol

  • u will never see this kind of talent on stage again.......... this is a one of a kind special performance.....amazing

  • What a fabulous collection of lips! Wish I'd been a fly on that wall!

  • thats what she said....haha not really, but this was an awesome vid.....LOVE THIS STANDARD

  • I love Maynard and have seen him at least 30 times but when it comes to technique no one can top Big Al Hirt.He can play it all from Jazz to Dixieland ,Symphony and everything in between.

  • i agree with you. My Grandpa played clarinet in his band befor Al cut his first album. I LOVE Al Hirt's trumpet style. It's so clean and awsome. uggggg! I want to play like him!

  • I agree with you Jumbo had tremendous command of the instrument. Maynard was even quoted in his biography as saying that. Al is realy not a pure jazz player though like Dizzy, however, he can hold his own.

  • I like Al Hirt's jazz playing better than Dizzy's. Cleaner, and better, well developed ideas. Plus he was a great ligit player. He was very underrated.

  • It's great to see all these greats together! Thanks for the post!

  • Does anyone else agree with me that Al Hirt looks like Bobby Shew?

  • Two bigg bubbas, that can PLAY

  • Chuck 4:10! digging it...loving this clip

  • That was really cool a bunch of top class musicians up there. Im not much of a scat fan but that was still good, I think maynard had try not to play high lol jk, he plays way different without his bigband lol, and im not much of a chuck fan but he is still and al was definatley the most technical here and doesn't want to be called a jazz musican he just wants to be called a musician

  • Al Hirt sounds the best....Unfortunately Diz was spent by this time in his life, as was MF . Chuck has the soul of a hippie, not quite a jazzer, but a beautiful musician....and don cherry...what can I say....

  • This wasn't a competition!! Everyone of those guys are great at what they did/do. How can you compare MF to Chuck or Dizz? Oh..MF was still on his game in the 80s. Spent at this time of his life???? Give me a break!!

  • Dizzy's playing is in a class of its own at 4:27-4:40, So beautiful.

  • whenever they are in groups like this bi AL shows em who has the real technique and skill! He was classically trained.

  • wow great playing all around

  • It's mind-blowing that folks you think are diffent species, actually know & like each other . . . and performed together!!

    This is terribly cool.

  • What is the year of this video?

  • It is around 1987. It originally aired on March 22 on Cinemax.

  • dude....fantastic line up! lots of awesome musicians performing an awesome song!

  • pocket trumpet solo!

  • I wish I could of been here

  • dizzy is the master!! thanks for this!

  • Ein Staraufgebot der Superlative!!! Sehr toller Beitrag!!! Tnx u!

  • Man..we sure have lost alot of greats in the past couple of decades. This stage was loaded with legends!

  • This is Music!

  • Wow! There were Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Chuck Mangione, Sarah Vaughan...All are Superclass in their own league....

  • sarah vaughn was one of the greatest of all time. If you dont believe me listen to the THE COMPLETE SARAH VAUGHN AND CLIFFORD BROWN. DIG SEPTEMBER SONG

  • i could have gone without Sarah Vaughn..

no offense really im just not into the scat stuff

  • I love scat, but I'm not so into her in this either. No disrespect intended, it just feels a little... forced.

  • Same, I don't really dig scat, either.

  • This is truly awesome, this is true jazz from the wizardry of the musicians, the intimacy of the venue and the chemistry of them all - pure unadulterated jazz!

  • WOW! What a gem! This is a treasure. Thanks for adding it.

  • its like watching the 6 hottest girls u culd think of doin whatever comes to mind this is so damn amazing

  • Wow... probably the best video on youtube i've ever seen :|

  • WTH?! amazing trumpetplayers on stage! But then suddenly a quick flash of a musician, which hasn't been named yet! It's Herbie Hancock at his piano! why doesn't he play a solo? :(

  • "by the way"!There is Ron Carter on the bass!

  • Thanks for the 2nd opinion! I thought that my be Ron Carter, but didn't really see a clear shot of him. All these cats are way too cool. Chuck & Maynard were both favorites of mine in High School when I was playing trumpet/flugel on a daily basis, but their styles are so different, I never expected to see them together!

    *****

    ~R

  • When you comp as great as Herbie does here, who needs solo? Together w. Ron

Carter and great Billy Higgins on the drums he helped to create that smooth feeling in a rhythm section the soloists could build on.

  • OMG, so many good trumpetplayers at the same time.

  • wow, some of teh greatest trumpet players ever. on one stage.

  • I'd never heard Don Cherry playing straight ahead--just his avant garde thing, like he did with Sonny Rollins on "Our Man in Jazz" lp back in the 60s. So I didn't really appreciate the cat much until this.

  • legends gathering on stage, almost brought a tear to my eye

  • Ya I'm in the audience,it was great, but really hot inside the club that night.

Get the video on e-bay if you can.

    tommy

  • man oh man the talent on that stage!!!shit they could just stand there and iwould pay to see it!!!!

  • What language does she sing?

  • I'll assume you are kidding, but just in case you're not, she is scat singing.

  • I was kidding. It sounds like some exotic alien language...perhaps from Mars?

  • The language is Scat.

And Sarah Vaughan Scat is Beautiful.

  • @jannokas85

    LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • @jannokas85 you call that a question?

  • I have to watch this beautiful clip at least once a day.

  • I bought the DVD "Sass & Brass" from the old HBO Jazz series.

About 6 of these greats are no longer with us,

Al,Diz,Maynard,Don,Sarah, and a cou[le of the older band members.

    Thanks for posting these clips...

  • hey- that looks like herbie hancock on the piano! this is a very cool video

  • Great Men! :)

  • increíble, todos mis trompetistas favoritos.

bueno, exepto Maynard Ferguson... el no sabe tocar.

  • Are you a fucking retard? Maynard Ferguson is one of the greatest trumpet players who ever lived.

  • Sing it, Sarah! You make me so happy!

  • Chuck and Dizzy 2 of my favs, i got to meet Diz here in Oz back in 87, t'was a blast

  • Is this from "Sass 'n' Brass"??

  • Now there's an "all-star" team for you, thanks for posting this. I've seen Maynard, Chuck, and Dizzy live (got to meet Chuck, and actually played w/Dizzy), great musicians all.

RIP Maynard, Al, & Dizzy (yes, his cheeks WERE that big)

  • That is one of the most unlikely meeting of musicians... thank you for uploading. Enjoyed it a lot

  • Talent rules. Never forget that.

  • lots of legends up there on stage. incredible.

  • Sweet.

  • Don't forget Herbie Hancock on piano :)

  • Al they needed was miles davis.

  • the legends of the horn. wow

  • I wish someone would post this whole concert the VHS i have of this is no longer with me.

  • I don't know who you are, leatherlips, but you're my hero!! All this trumpet-tooting talent AND "The Divine One" Sassy!!

  • All these guys play so differently and are great in there own right!! Thanks for posting!

  • Wow! I never knew all these guys were ever on the same stage together...what a trumpet summit... it just doesn't get any better than this!
