To say putting awesome players on stage and saying "go" doesn't work, just ask miles Davis how it worked. I would say it went rather well, and he was famous for just bringing sketches to the studio.
looks like a lame "all-star" concert. I don't think you get some fine music if you just put a lot of good musicians on a stage and let them play without a real concept.
If anyone watching this doesn't know a lot about music, or even about jazz....what you're watching would be the equivalent of Abraham, Moses, Elijah, Jacob and the Maccabees showing up at a bar mitzvah :P
I love Maynard and have seen him at least 30 times but when it comes to technique no one can top Big Al Hirt.He can play it all from Jazz to Dixieland ,Symphony and everything in between.
i agree with you. My Grandpa played clarinet in his band befor Al cut his first album. I LOVE Al Hirt's trumpet style. It's so clean and awsome. uggggg! I want to play like him!
I agree with you Jumbo had tremendous command of the instrument. Maynard was even quoted in his biography as saying that. Al is realy not a pure jazz player though like Dizzy, however, he can hold his own.
I like Al Hirt's jazz playing better than Dizzy's. Cleaner, and better, well developed ideas. Plus he was a great ligit player. He was very underrated.
That was really cool a bunch of top class musicians up there. Im not much of a scat fan but that was still good, I think maynard had try not to play high lol jk, he plays way different without his bigband lol, and im not much of a chuck fan but he is still and al was definatley the most technical here and doesn't want to be called a jazz musican he just wants to be called a musician
Al Hirt sounds the best....Unfortunately Diz was spent by this time in his life, as was MF . Chuck has the soul of a hippie, not quite a jazzer, but a beautiful musician....and don cherry...what can I say....
This wasn't a competition!! Everyone of those guys are great at what they did/do. How can you compare MF to Chuck or Dizz? Oh..MF was still on his game in the 80s. Spent at this time of his life???? Give me a break!!
sarah vaughn was one of the greatest of all time. If you dont believe me listen to the THE COMPLETE SARAH VAUGHN AND CLIFFORD BROWN. DIG SEPTEMBER SONG
This is truly awesome, this is true jazz from the wizardry of the musicians, the intimacy of the venue and the chemistry of them all - pure unadulterated jazz!
WTH?! amazing trumpetplayers on stage! But then suddenly a quick flash of a musician, which hasn't been named yet! It's Herbie Hancock at his piano! why doesn't he play a solo? :(
Thanks for the 2nd opinion! I thought that my be Ron Carter, but didn't really see a clear shot of him. All these cats are way too cool. Chuck & Maynard were both favorites of mine in High School when I was playing trumpet/flugel on a daily basis, but their styles are so different, I never expected to see them together!
I'd never heard Don Cherry playing straight ahead--just his avant garde thing, like he did with Sonny Rollins on "Our Man in Jazz" lp back in the 60s. So I didn't really appreciate the cat much until this.
Now there's an "all-star" team for you, thanks for posting this. I've seen Maynard, Chuck, and Dizzy live (got to meet Chuck, and actually played w/Dizzy), great musicians all.
RIP Maynard, Al, & Dizzy (yes, his cheeks WERE that big)

When you comp as great as Herbie does here, who needs solo? Together w. Ron
Carter and great Billy Higgins on the drums he helped to create that smooth feeling in a rhythm section the soloists could build on.
