Classic. 1966! Actually great skateboarding when you consider the clay or metal wheels being used on some hills I would not attempt with a good set of 78A's.
All very familiar - kids getting busted for nothing other than skating in the street. Police and municipalities actually turning skaters INTO rebels....
@rbarnesy That's precisly what I was thinking while watching this video. A bunch of well dressed, well behaved Canadian kids, getting into trouble for doing something that benefits their body/mind (through exercise) and keeps them out of trouble. Their being taught the lesson by the police through the irrational fear from the community that they are outcasts and cause the same amount of trouble (and therefore police attention) as those who perpetrate violent crime in our society... great vid!
@rbarnesy actually it would be the open bearings that would scare me, this spot is pretty slow and their wheels make it even slower, and the pavement was clean back then (lets just say they didn't change it since '66)
The only thing would be the hairpins maybe, but I think they're just riding the right hairpin (which is easy to stick in) and they turn right instead of left so they don't even have to break in the corner.
:) looks like you've really analysed it! I skat mostly tranny and it's been years since I have bombed any Westmount hills. I have a skatepark in NDG and stick to smooth masonite now.
Wow, seriously beautiful. I think that is the movie that Kubrick saw and was amazed by it, and he asked Jutras to make the trailer of the Clockwork Orange. I dont know but that must be it.
I made the skateboard with the Skull & Crossbones on it & that is me age 8 years riding on it briefly . One of the best films from the Late /Great... Claude Jutra,There should be an English translation out there somewhere @ NFB Thanks for finding and posting this...TGS
that is seriously cool that you were in this film.

Youtube "Devil's Toy part 1." and 2. Nothing's changed. 1966 in Montreal/Westmount. Cops busting skaters. Ignorance and paranoia.

Nice! Great spot - but think of riding it with a board that's about 6 inches wide with metal or clay wheels like they had. That's freek'n gnar.

@rbarnesy The security is pretty hard in there nowadays though, so keep to tranny, it's still fun.
