  • Once potatoes are planted will they come back year after year?

  • @buckstarchaser You spelled wheels wrong.

  • doesnt lime make the potatoes get scabs on them??

  • you know that if you plant the potatoes deeper in the soil you will produce more potatoes

  • Let the Potatoes sit out in the sun for a few days to harden after cutting them up and you won't have to dip them in your Lime...

  • Hi guys! Hey, I'm going to sound motherly here but, make sure she wears some shoes next time she tills the garden.

I've also started my garden stuff...planted heirloom banana pepper seeds indoors last Sunday. Today I've plotted where veggies will go in my garden trying to use the rotation method on some notebook paper. It's a great way to see next year where things should go.

Still have over 20 quarts of canned carrots, 15 or so canned tomato sauce, assorted canned fruits and veggies!!

  • 27 or 7, tilling barefoot is just plain dumb

  • @TheChocolateBanana As you can see, this is a front tine tiller. The wheals will have to run over her feet before the tines do. If that happens then odds are there are more serious problems than a pair of sneakers can prevent. The biggest risk she has is probably being bitten by fire ants... which will result in her wearing shoes :P

Gardening is about feeling free and connected with your surroundings. A lot of people like to feel the ground under their feet. And getting dirt in your shoes sucks

  • ive got some jalepenos, habaneros, and dill started indoors, trying to get a head start on spring this year. i cant wait to get the pole beans in the ground. theyre hard to keep up with once they get going.

  • Looks good. We've got a long way to go up here before we plant our potatoes in the ground but I've got my garbage can potatoes growing on the porch now. I know they won't bother potatoes but with you so close to the woods, what do you do to keep the deer from eating your garden? Great vid, I learn alot from watching yours. Thanks for sharing.

  • Haha, I see that bag you're using.

    (*not an endorsement for Walmart)

  • Potatoes also do a amazing job growing in car tires. Just keep stacking them up.

  • Here's to another great growing season!!!

  • way to go kev! I'm sprouting a sweet potato right now to go into my yard. Of course, you have a lot bigger space than I do... :)

  • im gonna try to plant some corn this year in the field behind my house...right now its 20 degrees tho...and snowin...cant wait for spring

  • who owns that land?

  • Comment removed

  • I have Kevs shoes lol

  • Did you check if those are gmo potato's?

  • Good idea Kev. Stay at it buddy.

  • Yea i have the same question why are you planing them so far apart? Do they grow that big?

  • @bigtintheheat - you need room between the plants for the potatoes to grow. Also, if we have any left over from planting, I'll go back in between and plant the extra a little more dense.

2 years ago I had them planted about 2 feet apart, and it worked out well

  • Great info thanks!

  • i have that same t-shirt you have on lol cool nice vid......5/5

  • if your using a natural fertilizer like wood ash why mix it with a chemical fertilizer also i thought potatoes like acidic soil like 5.0-6.0?

  • fireplace ash for potato planting! now i know....

  • God -I hate front tine tillers-They will work you to death.

  • Ah... I saw bare feet tilling! That one set of tough feet.

  • Just answered my own question. The reason you spread them out is for growth.

  • Why do you plant them every 5 feet Kev?

  • you must be fairly wealthy, considering your life style

  • @bakeee

You don't have to be wealthy to to have land.

  • that kid got some balls running that machine in bare feet! lol

  • And the parent/adult should step up and teach the young ones the proper and SAFE use of power equipment!

  • @Diopterman - the guy running the tiller with no shoes is grown and 27 years old. If he wants to risk having his toes cut off, that is his choice.

  • Even worse!

     He should know better!

  • @EastCoastOp - that "kid" as you call him is 27 years old.

  • @survivalistboards That's how we talk around here, some people say, 'guy', 'dude', 'buddy'. Didn't mean he was a child/minor. The real ignorance comes from "diopterman", I knew he wasn't a young, and didn't mean any disrespect.

  • @EastCoastOp - its ok, no big deal. :)

  • Good Deal!

I gotta till our garden VERY soon!

    John

  • A rear tine tiller is much easier to work with, saves the back.

  • True....but if anyone on here is like me, you make do with what you have.

  • Great to see potatoes going in the ground. It will be at least 5 weeks before I will be able to do anything in the garden.Thanks.

  • 0:06 work slaves, feed your master lol (good video these gotta be my fav type of vids that you upload 5 stars)

  • LOL! Kev would have made a good overseer.

  • interesting o_o

  • 3:03 How do I turn it off?

I hope it's not one of those engines you shut off by touching the spark plug with a grounding metal. If it is, don't ever let up on that grounding metal until the engine is completely off. It will be a shocking experience!

  • Looks like the family is working hard

  • It's great that you have that much land to play with. Here we are more condensed and this year I will try 3'by3' boxes that build up as they potatoe plants rise. I'll make a video about it. Seems you get 50 to 100 potatoes per box.

  • @mobiltec I would to watch that video because I was looking to expierement a little with a suburban backyard garden to see what I could come up with. So I would love to see your ideas. To call me a novice would be a compliment. Plus my family thinks I am nuts.

  • OK just keep an eye on my YT site for the videos. I plan on starting in the next 10 days...

  • Kev, where did you get that boonie hat? I want one LOL

  • We make our own fuels for our Rototillers, and fertilize using various waste products found around any home/farm. There are plenty of good books out there that explain how to do such things.

I alternate between my own fuel, and regular gas, b/c it extends the life of my engines greatly, and cuts down on the amnt of time I put into making my own fuels.

However, I have tested all of my engines on my farm with pure homemade fuel, and they work just fine; Just time consuming to make.

  • Prancingdog - Why don't you make a video and share with us your ideas on homemade fuels? I would like to know how to do it! I'm a single woman, and don't have anyone to do it for me. Please think about making a vid, and when you do I'll supscribe!

    Thanks

  • What are you gonna do when there is no gasoline or industrial made fertilizer for you to spread on your garden? Shouldn't you be moving toward a more sustainable method of farming? Just curious...not complaining.

  • I LOVE TO ROTOTILL, one of my odd forms of exercise. lol

  • I think I'd have dumped the potatoes in the ash bucket to simplify the procedure. Plus you won't forget to dip them in the ash...

  • i have the same pair of newbalance. the grip is insane.

  • Ha ha, I love this stuff. This is what its all about working the land for survival. Good idea using the carbon ashes to help with the growing, but your missing one element ammonia...I'm not kidding sprinkling ashes and then urine make the primary elements in ammonium nitrate...fertilizer. Be well

  • ★★★★★

  • Bare foot tilling in Feb...........LOL

  • now im even more anxious for spring than i already was...I wont be planting for a while here in new england

  • I love the idea of community gardens! and I've had old folks tell me about ashes and potatoes like you're doing!

  • My garden is just starting to pop out of the snow .. Hope I can get to work early on it this year ...

..LIke how you got a communuity plot, and everybody helps out.. thats cool man

  • You might check out "Geoff Lawton's Permaculture Food Forest" for ideas on using the shape of the land to get the maximum use out of the land

  • i will! thanks

  • the world needs more ppl like you decent shit

  • its too wet here to till...last year my potatoes were in the ground by feb 25..not this year..ill be lucky to get them in before april..raining now..great to see you working in the garden

  • stay chill
