  • Wayne Naus from Buddy Rich's band w/Lin Biviano?

  • @Vapor419 yes that helps a lot. I actually did a lot of research on it afterwards and along with getting a new professional sax for college and college auditions. Sometime in December I'm going down to a music shop I know of in Dayton where I know a few professionals that work there.

And to your other comment, those aren't even Berklee student. That's just a 5 week band some teens auditioned to get into. I cant imagine their actual jazz bands.

  • Jeez Berklee kids are just ridiculous. Those saxophones are so tight it's not even funny.

  • The only cool drum solo ever.

  • The band did great with this.

My high school jazz band is playing this song and I have the tenor solo, but I can't make that great rich tone he plays with in this video. Can anyone please tell me how to do it. It would help me out so much.

  • @chazzles93 It's hard to just change your tone on a dime, but what you can do without changing your embouchure is to try out some different mouthpieces, reeds, ligatures, and alternate tenor necks. Hope this helps!

  • The Bari player is rock solid

  • how good do u have to be to be in this program

  • Drums and saxes spot on, fantastic, even on the rock hard Sax Soli! Trumpets needed to be louder during band soli sections

  • My high school jazz ensemble played this song! I love it, our sax section was awesome, and I love the song anyways.

  • more trumpet sound!

  • i just wished they could have done it a little bit faster. we did it faster in our high school band. it sounds cooler

  • i like the tenor sax solo. pretty great.

and i had a lot of fun playing this song in high school. my favorite song to play on sax :)

  • Sounds GREAT. But short sleeve button downs haven't been in style since the 90's....real concert clothes would be even cooler.

  • how old were you in this (and how long had you been playing drums)?

  • @amanky11 I was 15 years old in this video, and I guess I'd been playing for about 6 years.

  • @ysmnthelight niice. i've been watching a lot of your videos and am liking what i'm seeing. keep up the good work

  • Sax section was pretty good, I wish the saxophone players at my high school were that good

  • @Yuhmaster17 Mine are :) straight superiors and 3 all-staters :) I might talk to them about this...

  • my jazz band played it faster :)

  • Yay for traditional Bass!

  • Dayuuuuuum

  • WOW that is a tight sax section...

  • saxes are awesome!!!!! need I say more?

  • Gotta love that sax section at 4:40 ^^

    Nice video :)

  • I loved the trumpet solo. :D

  • Great job!

  • watching this brought back awesome memories!! Thanks for uploading this!!!

  • Holy balls, this is good.

  • me gusta! a great stroll in the blingin jazz way!

  • Is it just me, or did they slow down a bit? and yeah, I can barely hear the trumpets at all....

  • @trumpetguy3039 ya they definitely slowed down. Still great stuff

  • you can barely hear the trumpets

  • What do you have t do to be in the program? are those freshmen at berklee or highschool kids?

  • It's open to high school kids. This video was from when I was a sophomore. You just need to apply for the program, which you can do online. I strongly recommend it! It was a blast.

  • did you have to audition? how does the program work exactly?(in choosing kids etc>)

  • That last chord is so dirty, i love it

  • Real good, but the lead trumpet didn't have the range to accomplish this piece

  • 3:34 BEST PART!

  • Hey! You guys were awesome! I'm not a drummer by any means, but from what I could hear, you were awesome, and you really got into the piece, like, some drummers just sit there playing with poker faces, and you actually were really, wholly, inside the music which was awesome. I really liked the part where you stopped playing and then the guy with the saxophone did his thing and everybody got back into the thing. The only thing that bothered me a bit, was the thin sound of most instruments.

  • very well played, but bad alto sax sound!

  • Its actually very good. Listen to the maynard ferguson arrangement and they almost sound exactly alike

  • I don't care if the "maynard ferguson" reed section also sounds like this and I also don't think much of the maynard ferguson big band... Listen to the Count Basie Orchestra! That's sound and that is real jazz!

  • Jazz cant be listed down to one band and one sound. There is many different styles and ways of playing jazz. So by the way your saying it, greats like Coltrane and Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Hancock didnt play real jazz?

  • I talked about big band and I didn't say that only Count Basie is real jazz. But I said that I think the maynard ferguson reed section hasn't a very good sound. I mean the ferguson band plays loud and he plays high as hell; sure that is also a "way of playing jazz" , but...

  • I guess I misunderstood you, my bad.

  • Well, I think the recording has quite low quality audio overall..

  • very, very good. not much more to say about this,

  • eh idk i like what the trumpets are playin its just they are underbalanced...they need maynard back from the dead to show them how to handle a horn like pro ;). great job on a difficult tune and the "hey" in the middle of the sax soli at 4:52 gave me goose bumps... this is what jazz is all about...bringing something new to the table and shredding as hard as possible. great job

  • kick ass tenor player

  • yeah, the bari player is a little too quiet. hmm, just like the bari player in your band eh. oh well, at least you can't give me crap on this tune, at least you can hear my now even on the far end of the section.

  • haha yes you caught me in the act :D

  • the trombones are way too quiet

  • Ah, I remember this chart. When I did the 5-week program in the summer of 2004, we played this in the big band as well. Wayne Naus is a cool guy.

  • does the drummer ever try traditional grip?

  • I sometimes switch to traditional when playing in low volume settings, but 99% of the time I play matched. It's just what I'm most comfortable with and have always done.

  • with really back beat heavy music where there's a lot of swing in the groove its worth trying traditional grip. you can get a fatter sound since you can really lean into fills it makes the left handed doubles a little easier to control too. Its different for everyone though.

  • The Drummer Should try to play more along the lines of the soloists. It's hard to do but if your a good drummer, your can pull it off. Also its fun if you and your bass player hit a couple hits together in random places, just watch each other make eye contact and smack! The audience will get a wake up call. Also not to crazy on your solo, nice effect.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. Developing good ears and knowing what to play under soloists is definitely something that I will always be working on.

I look back at this video (which is about a year and a half old) and get annoyed that I wasn't more involved with what was going on around me. So I know what you're saying. Thanks for the compliment on the solo! :]

  • dude, you're young and for how old you are you def. have plenty of potential to be a really badass drummer. keep it up!

  • also one more other comment, in the sax feature at 4:32 the bari sax and lead tenor were VERY straight with those notes, it needs more feel, especially from the bari.

  • pretty good, sounds like the lead trumpet mic should be raised a lot more than that, i heard it but it was not loud enough, obviously not his fault, other than that good, except for the not dressing the same/ dressing up, it looks VERY VERY unprofessional.

  • I luv the fact that they are dressed 'down', they look comfortable & chilled out AND like they are enjoying their performances. The young people performing are a "work in progress"

  • are you planning to put any more of the concert up? i'm quite interested in hearing the rest of the set.

  • The big band only played this piece and Satin Doll, which I will upload soon. I've been meaning to get around to it for a while now, but never did.

The rest of the concert featured a whole bunch of different ensembles that I probably won't get around to uploading... not that they weren't amazing, but the DVD is pretty long and I'm lazy. :P Hahah.

  • ah, thanks. i'm only interested in the big band stuff, and specifically listening to the way the guitarist is comping.

  • that was tight! im the drummer on my high school jazz ensemble, and the drummer did an awesome job with the tempo and he didnt falter on the drum breaks. i give him props becuase im still working on the beginning break because i do soemthing fancy and it throws off the time, so this video gave me some ideas.

  • Thank you so much! I played drums on this video, and your compliments mean a lot. Have fun with this piece! It's awesome.

  • my highschool band played this peice

  • Fantastic! One of my favorites.

  • i thought berklee's recital hall would be bigger. it's about as big as UMBC's.

  • i love this

  • so sick!!!!

that is, when i saw your face in this video...i became nauseous.
