video is 60 interlaced frames per second - which is what gives it that cheapo home camera look. films and music videos are traditionally shot in 24 frames per second (progressive mode) which means the motion of the images is a little more textured like in real life - which looks beautiful. so don't be confused by the word 'video' in 'music video'. music videos are actually shot in film, not video. 'video' is actually the cheapest looking image quality available.

that said, anything shot on the 5d or 7d in 24p or 30p is really digital motion film, not video. even at 60p on the 7d, u can't really call that video, because it's a progressive scan, and not interlaced. though at 60p you can make an argument that you're looking at video, because it has that same cheapo look (unless of course you slow it down to 24 or 30p, where it becomes more textured again).

I disagree that 24p looks more real! It's a jerky motion actually. If you look at a spinning wheel of a forward moving vehicle on a 24p motion film, it looks like it's spinning backward. Also in a bright scene, you'll see flashy bright light due to low frame rate (if you pay attention). So 24p does NOT make things look more real. Film making is not about making it exactly like real life anyway.

Sadly, this potentially great camera was ruined by the marketing muppeteers at Canon who elected to cram too many megapixels on the small APS-C sensor, thus compromising the purity of the sensel signal.

If the 7D would have launched as a 10mp camera, the 7D would have been incredible. So close, yet so far.

Right before then it was 16 frames for awhile. They were being economical with film. It's never been cheap. ever! ha ha

For everyone below...the reason we see 24p as being more "filmic" is that we are used to it as the standard speed that film runs. I doubt that people in the UK see things as less dramatic because their TV is 25p. It's what we're used to.

This is also why I HATE those 120Hz Tvs that interpolate frames. The picture is "clear", but it doesn't look the way it was intended to look. It takes away the "filmic" look.

um. at 24p the brain creates the "tweens", causing a subjective interpretation as "more dramatic".

look at the same exact footage shot at video field or frame rate, and the common joe will rate 24p as "more dramatic", an effect created in the head, regardless of lighting or depth of field.

add film style shallow depth of field and great color grading for more/better, but BIGGEST single difference is this tween-creating in brain once frame rate drops to 30fps or lower, in particular.

The humor is in that Canon released a multi-thousand dollar camera (5D) but disabled 24p so not to hit their video sales ... but "supposedly" enabled it for the movie "Ironman". Everyone waited for a 5D firmware release, but now they all need to buy new 7D's instead if they want 24 frames. Everyone should just wait for Sony's EX & RED's announcement next week that will hopefully smoke Canon.
