I saw Taddei as Scarpia and as Leporello. But like Renato Cappechi before supertitles he overacted for American audiences. He really ate the scenery. I loved it.
Domingo sang 130 roles. Taddei sang at least twice that many. Low baritones who can also sing bass roles have more opporunities. It doesn't hurt either if you learn music fast. He could be counted on to learn some major role in some minor opera that would never be heard again. He was more than just a singer. He was a pillar.
Taddei was a marvel not only in vocal expression but also as a stage actor of rare nuance for the time. His Gérard in the filmed RAI "Andrea Chenier" with Stella and ,so sorry, Mike, Del Monaco is a great favorite of mine. You are right to say, that if you are looking for an indispensable Italian baritone for many roles, Taddei is a top pick.
How wonderful of you to admit that Taddei, indeed, is among the stars of the stars - one of the greatest singers ever. We have a wealth of great Verdi baritones to hear on Youtube, but to me, the overall winner is Taddei for Italian repertoire. Between the beauty of his voice, his overall musicianship and sense of drama and style . . . he can't be beat. Thanks for another upload!
There is a saying that Italy gave the rest of the world Gobbi and kept Taddei for itself. While appreciating Gobbi's histrionic capabilities, I have a personal fondness for Taddei. His artistry is most complete, encompassing a wide range of roles. For me, he is the ideal Falstaff, in terms of both voice and interpretation.
Was eine Schande.

YES! A great Falstaff indeed. The best Figaro (Mozart) ever - the superb Giulini recording. His Macbeth opposite Birgit Nilsson is to die for.
He is one of the singers I always come back to. He is not just singing, he is acting with his voice.
