  • more than 19 people had burned their GPU

  • why would i worry about birth defects i have already been born

  • the screw method is a lye you need the xclamps thats what keeps your mother board from flexing you just need to do a reflow and replace the thermal paste and put the xclamps backon the reason the red rings happens is from lack of cleaning your xbox and the cheap thermal paste

  • tip: dont spread the thermal paste yourself. let the pressure from the heatsink spread it. You'll end up with tiny air bubbles in your paste if you spread it yourself, and the heat transfer wont be as good.

  • I want everone to look at 1:31 sorry Rhys how much time led in the vid... Look what's on his lap. Wonder where his tape was at lol :p

  • what if the screws are too small

  • Thx for response Im having trouble because some dude fixed my red rings with the clamp fix but i got my 3 red rings again in 5 days . I opened my xbox undid it and i saw that he just used 2 metal washers per bolt on the top side of motherboard . Do you suppose that shorted something or can adding nylon washers fix it . Or do i just need to probably get it reflowed ? Damn this sucks

  • @yoshi207

I'm really not sure, sorry. It's been so long since I've been into this scene. I hope everything works out for you.

  • @NotZapple hell ya u need nylon washers so it wont damage the board

  • DO I really NEED NYLON washers ??

  • @yoshi207

Yes, you don't want metal touching your board.

  • @yoshi207 no, you dont want to use nylon washers, they expand with the heat. you'll end up with the RROD again.

  • Are the washers and bigger holes / screws really a necessity? Can this work just be applying the thermal compound and just re-tightening the original screws?

  • lolz just use rubbing alcohol to clean the cpu. its like a computer

  • Ty for this tutorial

  • Hey I don't know if you know a lot about this but I've done this twice, and about a week after it is fixed, it goes back to how it looks in my video on my channel. Help please on what to do? or do you have no clue.

  • from what i understand this will continue to happen more and more often (wich is what happend to me). what is happening in most cases is the hana chip is overheating causing the soldering that holds it onto the mobo to loosen, or something. there is no permanent fix, in short...FUCK MICROSOFT! i never had any problems with my ps3.

  • Dude you got raped on the screws and washers from llama you could have whent to lowes and purchased 5mm stainless steel low lens head screws a pack of 50 for45 and 5mm washers a pack of 100 for $6 and you don't have to drill any holes in your case. Get your arctic silver paste from radio shack for $10. Just thought you should know,

  • this vid makes my ass hurt.. or is it my chair. u could have gottehn the arctic silver from radioshack i think. nice vid

  • Thanks, not bad. I can add a tip though. When cleaning off the thermal heat transfer paste ( actic silver) use a lint free paper towel. You don't want lint left behind. Were can you find lint free paper quickly around the house? Paper coffee filters. It's an old trick from the days of fixing VCR's.

  • @hopponit

    Ah, good tip. Thanks!

  • does it have to be artic silver heat sink???

  • can i put the xclamp on a xbox that i want to mod even tho it doesn't hav rrod

  • lol @ 3:32 ,what did YOU do?hold your breath?

    nice tut tho.

  • This is why is called a TUTORIAL! You should show how to open and close it! Whats the point of calling it a tutorial if you dont start from 0. Good but incomplete tutorial.

  • there are several videos showing you how to open the 360. If you haven't figured out how use the search feature of youtube; then you need more help than we can give you.

  • yea, but the whole point of a TUTORIAL is to show from the begining and not almost half way.

  • No, the point of a TUTORIAL, is to show you how to do something. Not show you how to do EVERYTHING.

If you want to know how to open an xbox, look for a TUTORIAL on how to open an xbox.

This is a TUTORIAL on how to put an x-clamp onto an xbox.

Did I make this OBVIOUS enough for you?

  • Naw... a TUTORIAL is to show you how to do everything... from 0 to 10 or what ever. So your saying is a complete tutorial if I make a TUTORIAL in how to open a xbox and remove the screws and then I start taping a post it on youtube? As far as I know TUTORIAL is a video that shows you how to fix/make something from 0. Im not going to make a TUTORIAL about in how to clean a gun and start taping when the gun is already open, and hope for the user to search in how to open that same gun.

  • Well, lets see here.

The title of this video is "X-Clamp Xbox 360 Fix Mod" right? Which means its not a TUTORIAL on how to take apart an xbox, and then put it on, then put it all back together again.

It is a TUTORIAL on how to do a certain THING.

You don't want to watch a tutorial on how to use a computer, and watch them boot it up, do you?

Or on how to make something out of random shit you bought, and then watch them buy it from the shop.

  • Come on guys, really? Like I said in the beginning of the video, if you are looking at this you PROBABLY already know how to open an Xbox 360. If not there are already MANY MANY videos which cover this topic.

    xPyroxx, thank you.

  • will this work even after ive done the towel trick to over heat it? and can i buy the washers and heatsink paste at a hardware store like lowes or radioshack?

  • ive had new xclamps on my 360 elite and im geting them again after 6months can this be fixed? any advice would be appreciated

  • My xbox came with no X clamps. WHat should i do?

  • look you know that 2 thing you but on the cpu and the other chip i have different the big one have like a tube to another its wierd i have been without my xbox 360 for 7 months and i really want to play the new Prototype I need help! do you know a really detalied video that showes everything PS: this video is nice to (the best i've seeen actually

  • i have a question. why does the xbox 360 work only because you dont have the x'es

and the screw's things why does it work?

  • I think it's because the X clamps put strain on the motherboard and bend it slightly. I'm not 100% on that though.

  • actually that is accurate information... when the xbox starts to heat up to high temperatures overtime the mobo starts to bend cause of the x clamps pulling away which usually causes the gpu to become partially disconnected and a rrod....

  • i saw a tutorial that used soder... n i already have that so i gess i'll use that instead

  • u can find most of the screws and stuff at home depot and get rubber washer works better and u can get the thermal compound at radioshack

  • Would white spirit work for the alcohol cleaning?

  • Putting the screws through the case is pointless. Just put them straight through the bottom of the motherboard with a single washer on the bottom, then you can still take your motherboard out without disconnecting the heatsinks, which always has the potential to harm your CPU or GPU when you put them back on. I don't know why these tutorials tell you to do that, it's totally retarded.

  • you dont have to use the cleaner just put an even layer of new thermal compound ontop of the existing stuff. the more the merrier.

  • thats terrible advice

  • instead of using the Oops! gunk remover, you can use 90% rubbing alcohol, cheap from the store. less than $1 for a big bottle.

  • dos this fix it for ever

  • its not a proper fix but it does solve the RROD, as for the paste its called ARCTIC SILVER 5, that compound never drys, it transfers heat to the heat sink, try not use the nylon washers use metal washers instead and screw the cunt out of the gpu heat sink once it done sit the thermo on the cpu heat sink and block all heat to the gpu heat sink, turn on the console and let the gpu heat up for 15 min this will fix the 3RROD.

  • how long dos this last for

  • well how long is a piece of string, all depends on how you use your console, out of 100 consoles, about 5 to 8 people came back, i ended up selling them new consoles, the later model console have been fixed from factory. if it comes back again you could try using a heat gun and heat the gpu up, not a safe way but it could fix the problem.

  • does this work if the 360 already red ringed or before it does, its probably a stupid question. thanks

  • Yes, the 360 had RRoD before I did this fix.

  • The purpose of thermal paste is not to cool, but to bond the two pieces of metal/alluminum for proper heat transfer to the heatsink. Reusing thermal compound will drastically reduce the ability to transfer heat to the heatsink, causing the cpu/gpu to retain even more heat/warp crack solders even more.

  • It's more to effectively transfer more heat between to surfaces; to increase the amount of each surface in contact with the other, than to bond them together.

    But same result I suppose.

  • *two

    : /

Ugh. I should go to bed.

  • the thermal paste only adds 1 degree of cool so its not even worth puting new one one just keep the old paste but x clamp works my xbox has never worked better

  • Your the fuckin Idiot and in the end your gonna have to pay $300.00 for totally destroyin ur xbox so go ahead and keep "overheating" it ha ha

  • and ur the one who takes it apart and cant send it back so it looks like ur the dumb ass...when it stops workin alltogether just send it back

  • I already fixed my by takin it all apart and fixin the problem. Just cause your a bitch and scared to take it apart all you know how to do is Just fix it temporarily and fuck it up 10x worse so keep talkin your shit and Overheatin ur box

  • their called heat sinks

  • Or you go to Radio Shack and spend $5. O and its a bunch easier to just use a T-8 torx bit. dumbass...

but at least you knew what you were doing

  • is this fix permanent?

  • Also - the paste has a curing time and the temps will drop off a little at about 200hrs use. Whatever you do, don't keep piling it on or it will take longer to cure and will increase thermal resistance unlike what it's meant to do which is decrease thermal resistance.

  • Also it looks like you're applying a lot, that will mean that the paste will increase temperatures past if you had no thermal paste if it's thick enough :s

use masking tape to hold on the screws - works quite well, a trick i've learnt when installing waterblocks. :s

try and get some of the rubber gaskets that are meant for northbridges/southbridges to put round the chips, that will help them go on more stably.

  • Hehe - small problem

your goo-gone or w/e will leave a residue on the chips - which means the temperatures will rise significantly. Use something like Arctic Silver Arcticlean which is designed for use with the arctic silver 5 (available at computer parts retailers!) and you'd get far better temperatures.

Also you should spread the AS5 across the cores evenly and thinly instead of putting a blob on. Temps drop again

  • lol you said goo!

  • dos this work for the 2 redl light error also??

  • Not sure...

  • The 2 red Light error is caused from overheating,

which will screw your xbox. DON'T LET IT OVERHEAT!!! But, yes this can fix it very well. Especially applying the right amount of thermal paste. you need to add about as much as a grain of rice.

  • Thanks for these videos man. These are the first videos I have found that don't say "Buy this Guide". I didn't know you could buy a kit either. I am going to use these videos to fix my 360, and Im going to recommend these to others who need them. Again, thanks a ton man.

  • ima about to try this in too minutes if it dont work ima be pissed - . -

  • fuck all this shit ill just send it back

  • Okay.

  • Yeah, if you give 100 bucks, or more to Microsoft.

  • and, Does it make a difference if I clean it or not? does the cleaner remove the old glue?

  • I would clean it. Why not? Don't rush.

  • but does the cleaner remove the old glue?

  • Well it's not glue, its thermal compound, yes.

  • For the GPU, Where do you apply the Thermal Compound? Around the Edges? On the Gpu itself?

  • On the GPU itself.

  • good vid, I've also read that the casing standoffs for the inner part of the board are 0.75mm too high so you'll still get some board flexing using the 3mm xclamp standoffs.

  • you dont need that shit to clean off the pasting you can use water lol or alcohal

  • lol "i dont know what its called"....

    flathead screwdriver mate :D

  • he said flathead he wasnt sure what a drill bit was called

  • torx 8?

  • No, I said "flathead" like RobA said earlier. I just couldn't think of the name for "drill bit" Heh.

  • yea i end up getting it working i just had to add metal washers the screws i bought were to long

  • Good job :)

  • ok so i did this with one of my xbox and it worked well now i am doing it for my friend and i did it and let it over heat 2 red rings let it cool down and when i turn it back on it goes back to 3 red rings any suggestions

  • Did you use thermal grease? And did you tighten the screws to your heatsink so that it has a good connection to the CPU?

    Try those.

  • i have a question for any one that can answer it okay my XBOX had 4 lights okay , its a A/V

problem i heard well i cleaned the HDMI connector, and pluged it in it got rid of it ,

but NOW it will turn on , u will see the dash board , i put a game in , or DVD it will play for like 3 min then the screen will freese , and the whole screen will look blury no sound

, cant do nothin except turn it OFF. CAN U HELP !!!!!!!!!

  • Thats pre-RRoD symptoms, not to scare you but your xbox is about to die. Go get the Xclamp mod and that should do the trick.

  • hello pleez tell me the size of washers and screws

  • m5x12mm,#10 nylon and steel washers

  • this guy wow is so pro rofl

thermal paste is for keeping your temp 20 degrees lower then with out it man you dont know any thing regular paste is white or grey it drys after a while silver past has 5% silver in it and it never drys : )

  • man you got like -7 just for saying that o.0

    watch your fire....

  • does it matter if you drill bigger holes in metal chasis and then put screws through?

  • hi dude nice vid i dont have a 360 (yet) i know gay lol but i think wat u guys that make these vids are great cas people get so annoyed when there consoles get the evil 3 Rings. my mate got it and sent his xbox away for like 3 months lol. anyway nice vid.

  • i bought an x clamp fix kit witch included washers, thermal paste, and all that on ebay for like $9.00

  • u do not need to screw new holes in the chassis all you need to do is screw the heatsinks back on.

  • will it work with other thermal paste ? and one more qestion , did you screw up gpu and cpu with screw (without original X-Clamp) or you screw up only gpu heat sink and use original clamp for cpu ?

  • Other thermal paste should work, but if you read the comment a few down from this one there are people talking about it. Someone said Arctic Silver 5 is the best, I personally do not know which is the best and used the one in the tutorial I read following.

I didn't use the clamps at all afterward, I just used the screws that I bought and secured the head sinks back to the GPU and CPU.

  • u can buy seperately all of that,u can buy the screws n washers at home depot or any store of the sort, for the thermal paste,u wil need to the yellow pages or the net and just look around, post comments about it and hope u get lucky, avoid waitin a week or 2 b4 getting the tools from that site

  • thx, any clue how much it cost?

  • can I buy the thermal paste in a store?

  • probably not, i bought it on ebay for cheap.

  • Thanks man, back gaming on a 2005 model!

  • Nice job. Glad I could help.

  • Hey man thanx for makin this video, I just fixed my 360 yesterday and everything works now!

  • Good job!

  • is it a big deal to not have any thermal paste on at all

  • yes. google it.

  • if my cpu started smoking will it stilll work with arctic silver

  • if you didn't burn it up...sure

  • i have done all this right and still get the ring of death.. but then i got the wisper fan and now it works great 8 hours of game play and working great

  • okey i did all the repairing process but my xbox is still not working.. i didnt changed the screws and i didnt used the thermal paste because i didnt have one.. what should i do?

  • Not have attempted without the proper materials.

  • hahaha, so true XD

  • LOL if you are going to use a tutorial to do something, you should actually fallow it. You screwed up, and may have messed up the system more now. Hopefully you didn't though.

  • what is the silver liquid thing called? the one u put on top of the chips

  • its called arctic silver. the real name of it is called "thermal paste" and is used for controlling heat on processors

  • ...it isn't used to control it's used to make a better contact between the cpu and the heatsink to allow heat to spread across the entire heatsink

  • the thermal compound have mercury in it, that is why it causes birth defects........lol

  • I can't believe people are not up and arms about this.. I mean really think about whats happening here. Customers are paying good money for a product that they are having to fix themselves. I mean look at this?? hes got his entire xbox 360 apart and is making mods. People had to come up with their own fixes.. for a POS. I have the one red light and im pissed. All these problems people have had is bordering on criminal. MS should be fixing our xbox's outside of the warranty becaues its knownissue

  • i like your comment why would you take yer whole xbox 360 apart. mine broke yesterday, and if you take yer whole xbox apart and it still does not work. they wont give you the money back cuase you have physicly done somthing to it.

  • My 360 was modded. You have to open your case to mod it, so they wouldn't have fixed it for free. If you haven't opened it for free then just call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and tell them you got RROD, they will fix it for free.

  • Your basically right. I wanted to take mine apart, but i'm forced into principals here. how sad is that, were down to principals now. I will not take it apart i've deceided that I shouldnt have to. Whether they fix it for free or they appologize, doesnt matter, its a principal. Don't laugh at an appology, if anything merits that, This does.

  • those are post-it pads christ

  • I know, haha. They didn't work well so I was forced to go find tape.

  • good video

does any one know where to buy nylon

    washers at

  • Go to the link my my description.

  • hey how do i take the clamps out help

  • hey! whats up. is it ok if i just put the screws on the motherboard instead of the steel case??

  • yes. if you read my rambling posts, i mention i found it better to do so.

  • how come when i turn on my xbox it has the ring of death instantly when i press the button and the green light on the console blinks 2 pllzzzz help thanks

  • alright how do i get tht out the xbox 360 lol

  • I am so disappointed in Microsoft for f'in up the 360 console. I am so upset I want to cry

  • i went to home depot - screws $4.00 - washers $5.00

    local computer store - Artic Silver $8.00 a fixed 360 - priceless.

if you guys are struggling finding screws:

    10 = length

    .80 = thread measurement

m5 = type of machine screw

Bring the heat-sink to the hardware store to test threads!

the screw driver / power bits you need are t8, and t10 tork bits or screw heads to open this bad boy. my purchased screws were pan heads (flat head screw driver)

  • that was cool the way u put the begining together. lol. priceless

  • oh and i have about 32 hours of play since the fix, no problems, roughly a week and a half so far... hope this info gives others incentive to try.

  • THANK YOU! i did this using your video and IT WORKED!. i just have to mention, i used 3 nylon washers instead of bolting it to the metal case, i just bolted it to the mother board.... i found the MotherB flexed too much when connected to the case. AND i used 70% rubbing al, instead of 90%, still worked great. and the baking took roughly 5 minutes on my machine. thank you so much.

  • lol mean won't last longer..so we need get our hand up and modd the 360...damn microsoft!

  • i dident understand your comment but if you meant to say "it wont last long" ive had the clamp fix on for a year. And its still running fine :D

  • i mean before u x clamp it...it wont last longer so that why x clamp is needed im looking forward to cooling by putting extra fan

  • Why not just use plain old 90 percent isopropyl alcohol? Personally, I think using anything else is INSANE. That oops shit probably has a shitload of water in it and won't evaporate off instantly like iso alcohol will.

Pouring water on a motherboard = BAD.

  • lol i would have to say you are right my good man.

  • I agree, who would pour water on the motherboard? I sure didn't.

  • nice vid put links to part 2 and 3 in your video info part. Thanks

  • why doesnt microsoft just do it them selves

  • where i get confuse though is that some tutorial put the screws directly under the board, and not through the metallic box, wonder which technique last longer, coz i tried that one, and it didn't last long

  • after removing the x-clamp from the it gave me this error 0203 and i cant find any info on this error

  • Chris i have question...wat is the 1st problem xbox 360...mean like bought few day,few month, few year and problem come up..wat is the problem?

and btw im still doubt to buy 360...

  • It's different for all Xbox 360s honestly. Mine lasted about one year and a few months (bought bout a month after they came out) then sent for repair. Then after the new one they sent me red ringed about 5 months after I modded it, I made this vid.

  • good vid,i need help, mine will play but frezzes in about 10 min and it will keep doin that the it will get 3 rings of light after a while, its completly apart right now i need help

  • that happened to me too. it means that your xbox wasn't made correctly so it will work for about 6 to 8 months then it will get the red lights and freeze. the 360isn't just overheating. your best bet is to send it back to xbox or get a new one.

  • naa you do have to drill but........ i just clamped the screws on the motherboard which stops the dreaded FLEX but this tutorial extremely good! worked for me!

  • I m preety sure you don't have to drill the holes if you use the same screwws

  • You can't use the same screws because when you remove the XClamp those little screws were what was holding it on and causing strain on the motherboard. Doing this eliminates stress on the mobo and creates a nice tight attachment of the heatsink to the CPU and GPU.

  • Oh ok cool. The reason I said that is because I will be modding soon on an rrod unit from ebay and I was Trying to make less work for myself. =P. Thanks for explaining that dude.

  • thank you now i know how to fix my 360
