  • I like this game *because* it's a blatant rip-off of Mario Kart. The world needs lots more "Mario Kart" rip-offs if you ask me. My only major problems with this game are the lame power-ups and those annoying castle levels.

  • hmm nothing like mario kart then :-) LOL

  • EVEN MARIO KART FOR SUPERNES HAS BETTER GRAPHICS.

  • looks like mario kart from super nintendo. 64 bits...

  • does anyone know if the PAL Cartridge of this game works on the NTSC US Version Console? never played Atari Jaguar before, but have some stuff now that I wanna try I just don't know if the console is region free or not. if anyone knows please let me know thanks!

  • The skybox that doesnt rotate could really give someone an anurism.

  • If you want to play the best racing game on the Jag then try Super Burnout, its a lot faster then this and a lot more fun.

  • @ViciousAlienKlown SB is fun, but its not as playable as AK in my opinion.

  • The best thing about Atari Karts was the graphics, especially the background. Although I enjoyed the music, it simply didn't fit the game's genre. The music for the results screen reminds me of a hospital drama! Too many sharp curves.

In many ways it was better than Mario Kart, except for one aspect: Mario Kart was more *FUN* to play!

  • @airmichael2000 The Jag is region free. You can play and Cart or CD anywhere in the world.

  • Hardly a killer app but I've played a lot more crap games in the awful Jaguar library (Club Drive, Supercross 3D, Trevor McFur, White Men Can't Jump) to name a few.

This one isn't too bad for a Mario Kart knockoff and the music is very good.

  • Now your just grasping at straws to keep arguing. So what, people don't agree with you about a stupid Mario Kart clone. Get a life! Haw!

  • I was just having some fun, I didn't know you were taking it so seriously! Your the one who found it "amazing". You tell me to get a life and I'm a fanboy. You totally lost your credibilty. I have a life I study the universe professionally with a 20 inch observitory and see things in a perspective you can't imagine. Having a laugh on the internet is fun sometimes. Your the absolute fool here.

  • LOL! Your the one who got his panties in a wad when I schooled you on how there are power ups in Atari Karts. Funny how you didn't challenge that, it's because you can't! What an ego! BTW cute how you got all 4 of your Youtube followers to leave me a neg. That's what I mean by get a life, lamer!

  • Don't fool yourself! If you could see that well you could see the Jaguar and this game is a pile of crap!

  • No machine is really a pile of crap. They all have their place.

  • For sure! And the Jaguar has it's place in a toilet living large as a big stinky floater.

Matter of fact I just had a strong cup of black coffee and a smoke. Time to go pinch off a Jaguar! Later!

  • without the jag, we wouldn't have tempest 2000, and the best kick-ass soundtrack ever.

  • While his reply may have seemed a little brash, be honest here as you are the one trying to stir the pot with people here. Seems that the tables got turned on you. And you're rather bitter when it comes to taking your own medicine.

  • Oh and that comment about being bitter was directed @ Jesus32Extreme.

  • Execpt that fact that it's 2d and mario64's 3d... but Iknow what you mean, Your right I am bitter about a machine I've never seen physically. It's a mario kart clone, I could never possibly imagine that it was. It was totally beyond my mind that it was an exact clone of mario kart. Identical in every way. Ok Ok I shut up now, you guys have been great!

  • "You totally lost your credibilty. I have a life I study the universe professionally with a 20 inch observitory and see things in a perspective you can't imagine."

No dude. After sharing that with us YOU just lost ALL credibility. Nutter!

  • I'll take 'Nutter' as a complement. You will never forget this conversation.

  • Even though my argument has tougue and cheek in it, there is also the point that few games are 100% original, At its very core MOH it is basically wolfeinstein! How can you not understand that? I obviously know the great distances the fps has come, But it's ultimate progression simply stems from the fist fps. So like doom was a step forward in the genre so was atari karts, not as drastically though!(no shit), But it is the same exact type of progression that lead wolfeinstein to Moh.

  • What does MOH have to do with anything? I'm not the one arguing that MOH has some vague stuff in common with Wolf3D! This was about how Atari Karts lacks innovation over SNES Mario Kart. But since you can't debate logically about that anymore, and rather troll about some other game now in a vain attempt to feel intellectually superior... I guess the conversation is over. You've proved nothing here except intolerance in accepting a different opinion that differs than your own.

  • Your totally right, I concede deafeat. And I apologise for having such an atittude. Do you accept my apology?. You shall have the last say about your "amazing stupid clone" (just a joke). Enjoy your life. I really mean that. Perhaps one day you will look back and think about me: 'what an idiot'. Goodbye earthling, Perhaps it would have been more fun to talk of in real life. I shall never know.

  • Sure I'll accept it. And I apologize for getting a bit riled up as well.

  • well a quake or doom rip off would be a better example I should say, but you know what I mean...

  • Good point on the pro controller!

I had a lot of fun with this game! Sure it's a Mario kart ripoff but it was a good one!

  • thats like saying every first persons a half-life rip off. This games it's own thing cause it's soul feels so different I believe. Jeepers what a background...........

  • Well there are a lot of different styles of FPS games though now. Games like Doom, Call of Cthulhu, and Half Life are actually rather different gaming experiences although all FPS.

Besides scrolling backgrounds and maybe a bit nicer looking sprites the game play and graphical theme is basically the same as 16bit Mario Kart.

  • So those fps, they feel and look different right, just Like crash bandicoot racing, mario kart, Mario kart 64, BC racers..., Feel and look different as well..... All fps have the same core, their quirks music and art make for a different "gaming experince" as well as a few original ideas just like kart games have differnt sliding, jumping and weapon attack methods, but ultimately all are wolfenstein clones or mario kart clones at their very core as I said. So I totally disagree

  • You keep overlooking my point though that Atari Kart doesn't do anything different than SNES Mario kart gameplay wise though. Besides some purtier graphics it's the same damn game! LOL!

  • but it doesn't have weapons, it's all about being slow and dull. It's designed to depress you, Was mario kart designed to make you sad with the wonder of how at the end of the day what will it all have ment when your gone?, as now everythings black, like nothing ever happenend, all those memories and complex sensations gone forever....

Atari Karts is very Different. It's understanding of our finite lives in this unimaginably vast void is only equalled by owning a powerful telescope.

  • There is the Reverse Opponents Control powerup which is basically a weapon. Anyhow if Atari Karts makes you sad in a happy way. More power to you.... I guess. It doesn't affect me the same way. When I owned it all I could think of was wow what an amazing Mario Kart ripoff game. Fun...But it is what it is one of the first Mario Kart clones.

  • Thats right like when I got medal of honor for ps2, What a amazing wolfeinstein rip off it was. You still shoot germans with a gun but now you can aim up and down! and the graphics are alot more detailed and curved. But it never was as different as "the reverse opponents control power up!!!

  • Reminds me of when I played Call of Cthulhu and Fatal Frame 2 Directors cut.... So unlike any FPS before it. Innovation that Atari Karts fails to make when compared to SNES Mario Kart.

Of course you're the only Jag fanboy on here trying to argue that.

  • Now! Now! You said there were no power ups and you got called on it. Brings to question if you've even played Atari Karts? I wonder.

  • Bada bing! Jesus32Xtreme officially OWNED!

  • @Cronos262 I didn't like the game play so much. There are definitely better games for the Jag.

  • That is not what he said about FPS games though. You did.

Like you, I could argue that Mario 64 is a ripoff of Pitfall. But that would be pretty idiotic as the differences are quite vast in virtually all areas. Just like many FPS games today are a far cry from Doom or Quake, with squad based shooting, emphasis on survival, etc.

There are uninspired clones and games that draw inspiration and dramatically change the genre. Does Atari Karts push the envelope Mario Kart established? Not IMO.

  • Glad you had fun and got involved.

  • The SNES would not be able to do this game for 1 reason; the Jaguar is scaling and rotating the racetrack as well as the roadside objects and other racers.

The SNES could only scale and/or rotate one object onscreen at any one time.

P.S. never realised how good the parallax scrolling on the background was in this game until just now!

  • So this is why the Jaguar tanked. They just kept putting out knockoffs of 16-bit games that were already available for the SNES and Genesis. Kazumi Nina, aka Mortal Kombat, and well this one speaks for itself.

  • You can tell the graphics are more colorful than Mario cart on SNES so there is a difference when you compare the two games side-by-side. The music is real good, but I must agree that for a 64-bit machine the Mode 7 effect seems out of place. You'd think Atari would have introduced 3D effects in the playfield to give it a next generation look and feel.

  • oops, i mean "snes"

  • no weapons? boo.

  • Mode 7?

  • "Mode 7?"

yeah, for a 64-bit game, it doesn't seem to be much better than the 16-bit version of mario cart for the nes

  • You can´t really say it looks like Mario Kart. The ground textures look much better and more detailed, same with the backgrounds and the nice parallax scrolling they used. IMO it shows some of the power that was superior to the other consoles but the jag could do much better. Take a look at Skyhammer or Iron Soldier 2 and ya know what I mean.

  • if Atari would have still been making game console do you thank they would have made a knock-off of Super Smash Bro. too? Atari smashers, or Mario Party? Atari jamboree. lol

  • It's like a SNES with better audio...

  • COOL

  • i suppose the game has poor control?

and the music is very dark.

  • Well, the control isn't poor, it is adequate. I think it's more of a case of bad track design... There's too many sharp turns on most of the tracks. The Karts aren't quite able to turn sharply enough most often, even with using the sharp turn button... Some of the music is kind of depressing, at the same time I enjoyed some of the music. The game isn't bad overall, it's actually quite fun to try to beat the all of the cups and circuits etc.

  • The most depressing is the Results screen IMO.

  • lol ya. Maybe it's because this was one of the last Jag games and the programmers knew this?

  • then what was the absolute last jaaguar game?

  • I'm pretty sure it was "Fight For Life".

  • Fight For Life and Defender 2000 were among the last "Atari" brand Jaguar releases. However, the Jag is unusual in that a bunch of games came out for it after Atari abandoned it. Telegames released a number (Iron Solider 2, Towers 2, Worms etc), 4-Play released Battlesphere and Songbird has released a bunch of games as well (ie. Hyperforce, Skyhammer).

  • Lol how ironic 'fight for life'.

  • It truly is ironic. I don't think it was just a coincidence that it was called that though... ;)

  • no fight for life was

  • You have to use the pro controller... with the shoulder buttons you can turn much more sharp... with normal controller you can use the keypad (7 and 9??? I don´t know anymore)...

  • this games looks very god

even better than B.C. Racers for 32X/Sega CD/3DO systems

  • This game does have very nice 2d graphics and scaling. I never played B.C. Racers though. I have played Atari Karts extensively though and if I had to rate it, I'd give it an 80%.
