@Somai82 Tax credits/deductions are not necessarily the same thing as subsidies. Ron Paul has consistently voted against subsidies. Student loans have drastically increased the cost of attending college and made it more unaffordable, not less. And to say that Paul, who has consistently opposed corporate welfare, opposed the bailouts, and wants to end the Fed, a tool of the elite banking class, represents the 1% is ridiculous. He hasn't received donations from even one billionaire

@Somai82 I'm not aware of the specific bill you're talking about re oil subsidies. A subsidy is the government giving away money to a business. A tax deduction (and in some cases tax credits) involves allowing corporations to keep more of their money. I remember the Democrats proposed a bill last year claiming to end subsidies that actually would have made oil companies pay taxes no other similar corporations pay. Ron Paul is against subsidies, but is for everyone keeping their money
@Somai82 Also, he didn't oppose the civil rights movement, just one section of one of the bills that, in his opinion, violated property rights. You're free to disagree with him, but his position isn't racist, and he was not opposed to ending segregation or voting disenfranchisement. As for the Civil War, the southern states seceded over slavery, but the war happened because the north wanted to prevent secession, not to end slavery (Lincoln said this himself).
@dwusc15 Well slavery wasn't the only reason, it had much to do with taxes, the growing federal government, and other state's rights as well. But slavery was one of many reasons. What it really boiled down to was the future direction our country would take meaning would we be a republic that allowed free association or would we become a democracy where state membership and submission to a large federal government was required.

He explicitly stated he would free no slaves as long as the union was preserved regardless. The South was afraid that long term, slavery would be outlawed if anti-slavery politicians were elected. I didn't deny any of this, all I said was secession didn't automatically have to mean war.
@Somai82 as for Ron Paul, his position is that slavery should have been ended peacefully, and that the North should have let the South secede rather than prosecute a war that left 600,000 dead. That doesn't make him racist or pro-slavery. William Lloyd Garrison, one of the most fervent abolitionists in the country, had advocated the northern states seceding from the union in the 1850's (which would mean northern states wouldn't have to comply with fugitive slave laws).

@Somai82 Tax credits/deductions are not necessarily the same thing as subsidies. Ron Paul has consistently voted against subsidies. Student loans have drastically increased the cost of attending college and made it more unaffordable, not less. And to say that Paul, who has consistently opposed corporate welfare, opposed the bailouts, and wants to end the Fed, a tool of the elite banking class, represents the 1% is ridiculous. He hasn't received donations from even one billionaire

@Somai82 I'm not aware of the specific bill you're talking about re oil subsidies. A subsidy is the government giving away money to a business. A tax deduction (and in some cases tax credits) involves allowing corporations to keep more of their money. I remember the Democrats proposed a bill last year claiming to end subsidies that actually would have made oil companies pay taxes no other similar corporations pay. Ron Paul is against subsidies, but is for everyone keeping their money

You're free to disagree with him, but his position isn't racist, and he was not opposed to ending segregation or voting disenfranchisement. As for the Civil War, the southern states seceded over slavery, but the war happened because the north wanted to prevent secession, not to end slavery (Lincoln said this himself).

@dwusc15 Well slavery wasn't the only reason, it had much to do with taxes, the growing federal government, and other state's rights as well. But slavery was one of many reasons. What it really boiled down to was the future direction our country would take meaning would we be a republic that allowed free association or would we become a democracy where state membership and submission to a large federal government was required.

He explicitly stated he would free no slaves as long as the union was preserved regardless. The South was afraid that long term, slavery would be outlawed if anti-slavery politicians were elected. I didn't deny any of this, all I said was secession didn't automatically have to mean war.

That doesn't make him racist or pro-slavery. William Lloyd Garrison, one of the most fervent abolitionists in the country, had advocated the northern states seceding from the union in the 1850's (which would mean northern states wouldn't have to comply with fugitive slave laws).
