His Intepretation at the end is not good at all, he misses sul ponticello markings, he misses the tempo and the bowings necesssary for a slower tempo-as marked- and his fingerings are also not good.
And his "trick" in the slow movement is just bad taste. You can get the same effekt if you play it normally. Just play it slower. This pizzicato trick by him I find "bad taste". Interesting Masterclass at all, thanks. But I am happy I had other teachers.
@MichaSchlechtriem Interesting. We listeners coming 20 years later, we might have different ideas about some pieces. Personnally, for instance, as a listener - I'm not cellist- I have a record with some Bach by Casals, that I dislike :-o
It would be interesting to get from you a different interpretation of this end, or a link to a video featuring one that you approuve.
I would approach my own ending, but I will not give you a link to it.Please get your own Ideas.See what is written in the Cello-Section by Debussy himself. And just do that!
Sophie played it wonderfully. She's just getting some more tips on how to improve HER style, I don't think ANYONE would go to a masterclass to play EXACTLY as their teacher, that would be senseless. Applauses for Sophie, for you have to be really humble to accept some advice when you've already got your own interpretation of a classical piece. Besides, what she did at 5:25 it's perfect, Tortelier couldn't emulate it, even when he said he'd love to steal it FROM HER.
lmao Sophie starts playing without Tortelier asking because she thinks she's going to one-up the "good boy", and she ends up getting blasted out of the water and brought to tears. Poor Sophie was beaten by the truth.
