  • Her voice is strong...reminds me of the brassy and sad vocals of Janis Joplin.

  • the day I randomly decide to youtube this girl whose music I'm not familiar with, happens to be her birthday. Trip out.

  • I am fortunated to keep in contact with Papa Dick and Mama Barbara,,,,who are Mia's father and Mia's second mother,,,,,they were destroyed by her death, but they are brave enough to continue living and finding reasons to live,,,eventhough she has left a deep pain in their souls,,life is not easy is what mama Barbara once told me,,,but there is no hate in the soul of these two wonderful people..love you mama ,,love you papa Dick,,,Shanell and Luis your adoptive grandchildren will know about this

  • Does anyone have any details about this? Why? Who was Jesus Mesquia? She know him? Can't find any case info. Just so... tragic and just... Why???

  • @magickalgurl She didn't know him. He was just a subhuman scumbag drifting into Seattle, to get as far away from his criminal history as he could (while still benefiting from being in the US). She was looking for her ex after a gig, and the predator saw her alone and attacked her. The worthless prey on the greats time after time.

  • I want to organize an annual memorial concert on her birthday each year. Its a shame that she was killed so brutally and not enough people know who she was. She was an amazing artist. Who wants to help me do this???

  • @allmusicalldayx3 ME if it's not late! :( I only discovered this person like a month ago!

  • @allmusicalldayx3 Awesome Idea! Viva Zapata!

  • Hopefully this asshole gets killed in jail in a very violent way. She had an incredible voice.

  • Getting murdered is a hellova way to get into the "27" club. A crying shame.

  • I went to see Mia last summer, on her birthday. I travelled from Spain to Louisville only to say HI to her, and tell her how much we miss her. Thank you Mia for everything you gave us. u will be missed forever.

  • je suis très touchée par ce documentaire .... Son père surtout ... c"est poignant ! merci

  • She reminds me of Janice Joplin, and it's so sad to see her young life end at the hands of a monster. We love you MIA!

  • R.I.P. Mia! There will never be anyone else like her.

  • @TheHappyDame A woman shouldn't be raped if she's walking down the street completely nude. What is it with all of these big men who constantly berate women for being "hysterical" and "emotional" yet they cannot control their sexual urges??? Makes tons of sense!

  • That song has made me cry many many times.

  • VIVA ZAPATA!!!!!!

  • I remember hearing "Another Shot of Whiskey" when "Frenching..." came out, and thinking, "My God, it's Bessie Smith." Glad to know I was on the mark. I haven't seen Mia's artwork until now. It speaks so deeply to you.... There was a dark side on display there; most artists on that kind of visceral level embrace both sides, and in doing so, she brought about something joyous and lasting. Too bad some illuminated their ignorance on here: like showing the World a bounced cheque they wrote...

  • @TheHappyDame I blocked Avinshitta....ignorance about Mia Zapata's rape & murder is not tolerated here. No one should be raped & murdered regardless of what they are wearing & regardless of what time of night it is. It is not the fault of women that men take the liberties in our world to act out their hatred & violence toward an innocent being. If these kinds of crimes were happening to men in the way in which they happen to women everyday then they simply would not be happening. Period.

  • @knockout68 Hey Knockout I wanted to first applaud you on the excellent film you have created here. I just recently saw and think it was absolutely amazing. I was 21 when this tragedy occured and was both a Gits and 7 year bitch fan. Your use of imagry and intersing juxtaposition of current and archival images was excellent. I'm 38 now and have returned to college after a winning a 12 year battle with drug and alcohol dependence and I am studying filmmaking. What advice if any do you have for..

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIA!!! I'm so sorry her life had to end the way it did...It's just so tragic! My love to her family and friends, always!

  • I love what his dad says in the end "she now belongs to all of you and it's neat, I like it, I'm proud of her". This is so tragic...I'll call my daughter Mia.

I fist learnt about the Gits from the Hype, documentary on Seattle bands (though I kind of knew about them because of Home Alive). When I saw the part when they do Bob (cousin o') I thought "Who is this woman?" and got really intrigued and listened and sure enough! She just moves you with her voice, UNBELIEVABLE!

  • Please see the documentary, "The Gits", it will tell you the whole story and then some....it's on Netflix and free on Snagfilms via the internet. Please rate it on IMDB. VIVA ZAPATA!!!!!

  • I've been listening to The Gits since I was a little kid during that year. And whenever my sisters and I put on one of the cassette tapes, (I know this sounds a little too corny, but I love music) it is hard for me to accept the fact that she is no longer alive.

We love you Mia. See ya soon.

  • We give criminals far too many chances. If one demonstrates a lack of desire to live like a civilized human being they should be dealt with accordingly. Mezquia behaved exactly in the way he had demonstrated repeatedly before this. He should have become fertilizer long before his encounter with Mia.

    .

If you insist on singing Kum ba ya and crying "but they're human beings too" okay, then be prepared to keep grieving over their victims. This murder was entirely preventable.

  • I'd never heard of Mia before. Not my cup of tea musically but clearly she was a talented and good person.

    .

This is one more stark example of the flawed mentality of our judicial system. Doing a quick look to confirm my suspicion, not surprisingly the animal that killed her had danced with the system numerous times before. No, I don't believe he should have been in prison before this he simply shouldn't have been breathing.

  • @sweepingchanges You're actually right about her muderer. I hope he DIES!!! I hope someone murders him...legally of course.

  • Very powerful

    A must see

  • @TheRosettaStoned You just made me so sad. Why would you say that? Not everyone is the same. My back ground is Italian/Puerto Rican and I love music and I feel emotions and I back up my friends and I love Jesus and I laugh and piss and shit and eat and breathe like you. Why would you bring this hate over here near this special music and camaraderie? You should be ashamed. That's not cool. ::The Gits Rule!!!::

  • @GutterDoll138 ...I just blocked this asshole TheRosettaStoned....Mia Zapata would detest this fuck. Peace Gutterdoll138..The Gits and Viva Zapata.

  • ...a person who is looking at the daunting task of both starting a new career path at almost 40 yrs. old but also a person who has a huge passion fordocumentary film in particular. Again,knockout68, I wants to congratulate you on making an incredible film. I absolutely loved it. Viva Zapata!

  • Viva Zapata!!!

  • May Mia rest in peace. This was a horrible tragedy not just because of her talent, but because she was an innocent human being.

  • May Mia rest in peace. This was a horrible tragedy not because of her talent, but because she was an innocent human being.

  • I just recently learned who Mia was, but I too was shocked and disgusted that her murderer only got 36 years in prison.

I tend to "lean left" myself but not in the case of the death penalty. Anyone who could do such a horrible thing to another human being deserves to be put to death.

I hope he suffers in prison for what he's done and that he never gets out so that he can't do this to anyone else.

  • Such a shame.

  • why wasnt this guy executed? why have capital punishment if u not gonna put 2 death a person who was convicted of 1st degree murder? wots the point?Even fidel castro washed his hands off this man and now the american taxpayer has 2 foot the bill go figure!!

  • Westnblu, I concur w/ your sentiments exactly regarding this POS Mezquia & the justice system or lack thereof. With previous documented assaults against women previous to Mia's murder, if they had kept this Cuban Embargo released prisoner in prison, then maybe she would still be alive today & rocking everybody w/ her vocals. He SHOULD have received the death penalty 4 the viciousness of the attack alone even if Mia HAD survived. Since she died, he deserved multiple death sentences. So heinous.

  • @westnblu if Mia Zapata was a poor and wasn't famous you wouldn't give a dam.

  • I trully feel that if she lived she would of been a major person bigger than she was not a pop star much more important.

    RIP.

  • google for the image of her killer Jesus Mezquia, he looks like an animal, why should God create such half human half animals ?

  • @jaydayb.....yes, Jesus Mezquia (the killer of Mia Zapata) looks like a non-human beast. The details of the crime are hideous enough coupled w/ Mezquia's physical self are incredulous. He is very large in stature & his eyes are dark reminiscent of an evil spirit...literally. I know, I was in the courtroom when he was being sentenced sitting behind Mia's sister. You can see a good portion of the sentencing trial & Mezquia in the documentary, "The Gits" on Netflix or free on SnagFilms online.

  • thanks,I watched it as you told me on snagfilms online, "The Gits",at 1:07:48 of that documentary a narrator actually repeats what I said in my last comment, he says "this guy is an animal", "a predator"...thanks for giving the address of snagfilms online,I am gonna enjoy those documentaries

  • @jaydayb....glad you got to see the documentary and I hoped you liked it. Mezquia is in prison where he belongs and, from all accounts, he is miserable and taunted everyday by other inmates or so I am told. All this while Mia Zapata's spirit soars.

  • @jaydayb Because there's no god.

  • Rest In Peace Mia Z.

    We love you!!!

  • I just saw the actual feature length documentary on Netflix. Wow, this was a great, well done film with such a tragic story. This is a must see documentary!!!

  • VIVA MIA!!!!!!!!!!

  • mia lives forever and ever (L)

  • Such a loss. Viva Mia Zapata. Never Forgotten. I love you

  • the whole documentary is fucking amazing. I love this band so badly.. and the last part of this video makes me cry all the time.. Miss you MIA, I love you

  • @orrorvacui1 Hearts, lady.

  • God bless Mia. What a talent we lost.

  • Very upsetting. Rest in peace.

  • May that filth never breathe free air again. What a devastating tragedy, still hurts to watch this, but a thousand thanks for posting it.

  • we miss you Mia <3

  • She was such a talented soul.

It's sad she can't still make music.

  • Without even knowing anything about Mia. When I first starting watching this video. One of the first things to come to my mind. Was this girl sings sort of like Janice Joplin. I was blown away when they said Janice Joplin in the video.

  • Exactly. Before even hearing the Joplin comparison, I thought Janis Joplin too.

  • Yes, my friend, is was a sure thing. Mia was mutilated and, without going into graphic detail, there was no sperm but saliva left on a HUGE bitemark on her body. The DNA from that contusion was apparent of an assault that was not consensual AND that infinitesimal amount of DNA that was extracted from Mia's body in conjunction with witnesses/previous potential victims and his rap sheet against women was more than enough to convict this piece of shit. I will elaborate, as I was in the court.

  • DNA's not enough? What more evidence do you need that he did it? Hell, why not just let the fucking piece of shit walk if DNA doesn't prove his guilt?

  • That he killed her wasn't a sure thing? The DNA proved it. If I'd been the judge, I would've blown his head off with a double barreled 8 guage shotgun or 44 Magnum right in the courtroom.

  • smartkart- Liberals just think of it as aboriton 28 years after birth. No big deal to them

  • LOL at racist right-wing punk fans. Clueless loser.

  • I admit that I do lean left on some issues, but on something like this, well suffice it to say that Jesus was DAMN lucky that I wasn't the judge. Overall, I'm a moderate.

To think this asswipe was named after the founder of the Christian faith1

  • Let's see- the asshole who raped and killed Mia only got 36 years? How long is that with parole? Sorry, but that piece of shit should've gotten the death penalty.

  • Creo que estoy tremendamente enamorada de esta mujer!! wow!!

    Love you mia!

Dios t3 tenga en el cielo ! ahora ya eres un angel de verdad.

  • So tragic. The Gits were on the brink of getting real success and to have a life taken away so brutally is terrible beyond belief. RIP Mia.

  • mia...you are sooo missed.

  • We can do without a lot of the people that DO NOT make up punk's core demographic.

  • Hope this changes one anti-death-penalty person's mind from the lefty artsy crowd. The man that killed her should be cut up and left to bleed to death.

  • We can only hope. While its only a small part of closure, its deserved. Skin color and language don't matter, when they are dancing with a needle. I hope her dad is doing ok. Seems like a devoted dad and a stand up guy.

  • she reminds me so much of janis joplin...ive recently discovered the Gits through 7 year bitch. i think its fuckd up that musicians like her die while garbage like avril lavigne and katy perry walk around subjecting ppl to mind numbing music.

  • Why would someone end the life of such a person as that? It's just...not right.

  • this video brings tears to my eyes. what an amazing documentry

  • it gives me chills... knockout68 is an absolute badass for this.

  • A father's pain...so vivid, so real. I guess it's true we are all out on loan.

  • this is really sad. Mia didnt deserve to die, especially the way she did. her voice was beautiful.

  • SOO right. No one deserves this especially not mia. what pisses me off is the murder didnt speak english and had this translated to him .. i want him to feel horrible and the raw emotion.

  • LETS NOT GET RACIST NOW.

  • ergm, that is not racist..

(s)he's just saying that he wished the killer could listen to the video directly, instead of getting it translated. because sentences and emotions are often connected, so..

  • the guy who killed her was racist, he a mexican illegal, singled out a white female to rape and murder......

  • you're a moron. He was Cuban and probably would have raped and murdered any vulnerable human being with a vagina.

  • Comment removed

  • @crashedupderby no the killer was cuban and mia is mexican american so dont talk shit R.I.P MIA ZAPATA REST IN PEACE ANGEL

  • This video almost brings me to tears. I'm only 17 and I would have given anything to be alive and witness the true talent of Mia and the Gits. It honestly pains me to watch this video, knowing that such a talent was taken away from us in such a repulsive and heinous way.

  • Hi, Blastingcaps. Took a look at your site and think you're butt ugly. Just an opinion. Now go rub your weenie in your mommie's basement.

    Have a bitchen' day.

  • not sure, "Sausage", what you mean about "mommie's basements", but I sure as Hell know that it has nothing to do with Mia Zapata, her murder, and The Gits. Again, what's your point, if there is one to be had?

  • I bid you farewell too, Sausage, and wish you all the best. However, my simple college educated mind cannot grasp any definitive point that you have professed to have made. Sorry.

  • Shame on you "Blastingcaps". You know nothing about Mia Zapata nor did you know she is a relative of E. Zapata. If you have nothing but hatred, why post here? It does "SUCK" as you say. It sucks that Mia Zapata was raped and murdered by a vile MAN. Sorry little boy. Now YOU HAVE AN AWESOME FUCKING DAY!!!!!

  • I hope that murderer will repent and be redeemed in prison. Why did southernrockdrummer call him a "beaner"? Zapata herself has an Hispanic last name. You should be ashamed, sir.

  • I agree, "DANHAGER", being disrespectful is wrong by calling him a "beaner". However, most of us do not care if he repents and gives his ugly right testicle, he deserves to suffer the way that Mia did in her final hours. Despite his race or motive or lack thereof, I say suffer fucker, suffer as you made Mia and her friends choke down this heinous act. It has everything to do with a disregard for the human life. Mia deserved better as do all victims that have suffered this kind of murder .

  • tha song on 2:40 ????

    please reply :)

  • The song is called, "It All Dies Anyways". It's a great song.

  • I watched this video for the xth time. It keeps on bringing tears to my eyes.

    And it keeps Mia alive.

  • the last words of the father bring tears to my eyes..

Like a friend of mine said to me when I lost a close friend last year:

@It is always hard to find the right words when one encounters death, and espececially the death of the young."

But to loose someone to such dire circumstance, I cant even begin to Imagine.

Peace to her friends and family.

  • what is that acoustic song at the end. sounds familiar, and its AWESOME!

  • The last song is "Cut My Skin" performed solo by Mia. It is a very rare version as there exists a full-bodied version on one of their albums. Viva Zapata!!! She was an absolute talent and a gem of a person from all accounts.

  • thanks. and yeah she was really one of a kind!

  • This is the saddest video i have ever seen in my entire life. R.I.P. Mia. I love The Gits!

  • Could you maybe upload it here, or PM it to me? I would love you forever.

  • My producer has the song. It is very, very rare. We obtained it while doing the documentary. I will send your info to her(my producer). I don't believe it will be a problem.

  • Do you happen to have the full version of that acoustic "Cut My Skin"?

  • Yes, I do have the whole version of "Cut My Skin". It's amazing.

  • rock in peace

  • Hey on November 10th on SPIKE Unsolved Mysteries there will be a story on Mia's death

  • Since she had a spanish surname was she hispanic?

    R.I.P. Mia Zapata

  • It has been said that Mia was a distant relative of the Mexican revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata.

  • Thanks.

  • Since she had a spanish surname was she hispanic?

R.I.P. Mia Zapata <<<==== YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS... MIA may she Restin peace was of Hispanic descent..

  • ese Jesus Mezquita debe morir...!

(That Jesus Mezquita must be Die...!)

Mia Zapata (R.I.P) the Gits not Dead!!!

    Grunge Not Dead!!!

    Best Regards From Venezuela!

  • so sad

mia is deeply missed and appreciated

  • so sad :(

    so very sad

mia you are missed so much.

  • Maldito Bastardo!!!! Hay que matar a todos esos malditos violadores!!!!

  • Just stumbled upon this video. Man, I still miss her and think about her a lot. The end of our innocence wasn't it?

  • Cheers tdugan33. Indeed this marked the end of innocence for many. To lose Mia and so many others at the hands of a cold blooded killer is simply unimaginable. Mia lives on through her music. Viva Zapata and The Gits.

  • I lived on Capitol hill during the time that she was murdered. I left Seattle in 96 but I always thought about this girl. I was so angry that she was killed and they didn't find the person. So when I heard that they solved the crime I was so happy. May she continue to rest in peace. People talked about her all the time. She was going to be a major force in the music industry. So sad that she didn't get to live out her dreams on earth. I hope that people will keep her memory alive.

  • Thank you for your comment, it means a lot and I'm sure many feel the same way as you do. The documentary will be screened in Los Angeles on October 23, 2008 at 7pm at The American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theater. Viva Mia Zapata and The Gits! We will also be in Chicago and Hawaii!!

  • thank you for this information. I will spread the world to my friends in LA. I will for sure see this documentary

  • could anyone tell me the name of the closing song?

  • The song at the end is a very rare acoustic version of The Gits', "Cut My Skin, It Makes Me Human" performed at a benefit show in Seattle. This version is sung and written by Mia Zapata. There is a more produced version with the whole band available.

  • much appreciated!

  • Wow, I guess I wasn't really there in the courtroom with Mia's friends and family. I guess I didn't show this in front of Judge Armstrong. I guess the newspapers in Seattle, WA lied when they detailed this video being shown. Wow!!! On top of that you have to call me a "fag". You sound very intelligent and well read my friend. Now go back to your room in your mommy's basement, you seem like you may hurt yourself with all of your wisdom. VIVA ZAPATA!!!!!!

  • Me too, everytime I watch this movie and I see her dad talkin' about Mia I feel like cryin'.

She was so beautiful in many ways.

"She now belongs to all of you"

    Thank you, we cherisch her.

  • This made me cry. I knew Mia. I lived a few blocks away from where her body was dumped.

    Rest In Peace Mia.

  • How dare that motherfucker's parents name that sick fucker Jesus. They should've sentenced that bastard to cruel and unusual punishment. I'm looking forward to the day he dies and burns in hell for an eternity.

  • dont want to be no racewarfuck cuz im sure thats not whaT SHE,D WANT BUT THAT SICK FUCK I WISH I COULD DESRTOY MY MOM WAS MURDERED GLAD THEY GOT THAT SICK FUK

  • Even better than Janis possibly?... I hope there is a place that souls can rest, 'cause people like Mia deserve it.

  • was she a painter?

  • mia zapata is my hero!

  • Viva Zapata!

  • Mia, you are missed so much. Every time I see or hear your dad talk about you I cry. I can't believe it's been almost 15 years since you were taken from us.

  • It breaks my heart to see her dad on the verge of tears at the end of the video.

It amazes me how callous some people can be to do a horrible thing like that to such a wonderful human being like her.

Rest in peace, Mia. You were snatched from us too soon; but your music will keep rocking our world, and your memory will remain with us.

  • i'm so fuckin mad....don't even talk to me

  • rip mia u are sorely missed

  • sad. and that animal who did it gets 3 meals a day, medical care, workout equipment, snacks, ETC at the taxpayers expense. it sucks.

  • my heart weeps and screams for the pain she must have felt the way she was brutaly raped and murdered. fuck, i miss her art.

  • she breaks my heart.

  • What's the acoustic song near the start anyone??

Great video, seriously tragic loss to music and to people.

  • "Social Love II" (acoustic version of "Social Love") -- found on "Enter:the Conquering Chicken"

  • thanks :)

  • Fry that Fucker!!!!

  • R.I.P MIA ZAPATA

  • R.I.P M.I.A ZAPATA

  • every single day i cry because of this

  • Thanks for posting.

    RIP Mia

Fuck that asshole who took her life!

  • Another Shot of Whiskey to drown out the pain....Viva Zapata!!!

  • The Queen of Table Waters shall always reign...

  • It was unbelievable to sit behind Mia Zapata's murder while he watched Mia on screen. He should have received the death penalty. Cheers to all Gits fans and to those who loved and knew the one and only Mia Zapata.

  • only learning about Mia recently

    really like her voice

  • saw her on TV first(some crime show) and I had to find out more about her - Being a drummer and knowing talent when I see it, her voice just blows me away.

    Very Sad.

    R I P Mia

  • thank you for posting this

  • Thanks for making this.

  • Mia lives in her music - no one compares!

  • sad.

    we miss her.
