  • hellooo butterfly jajaja

  • Part of the freedom of expression is the right to just say "This is nice, this sucks, your video's are crap or you so called expertise is questionable".

Certain scenario's, of course, do ask for a bit of justification, but this excludes the social media all together. A proper justification would be "I believe you are wrong on most things because you use objectively and subjectively interchangeably" or "you are technically inept as proven in video X Y and Z".

  • Great Video Jared!

i was wondering if any one could leave any comments on this picture i took, im quite proud but want other people to tell what they think! Thanks :)

    /500px(dot)com/photo/1892912

  • I always leave good feedback, but the crap I get back like "great shot" or "wow".

Just dont bother. Tell me why you like it.

  • I always leave good feedback, but the crap I get back like "great shot" or "wow".

    Just dont bother.

  • @R3aper24 I would have to agree with you. I think Jared should have a contest of the most creative/crazy video saying his "Fro Knows" slogan. Lol

  • If you post a photo on what site ever, you ASK people to comment on it. Your photos are great - except from that grandma series...

  • I really think this video/rant. told us nothing, and nothing we really needed to know.

I love feedback, or i wouldn't be on flickr, and i certainly wouldn't show my work as frequently as i do. In the end we all want to get better, and we all want to be unique. or else Jared wouldnt have 32,000 subscribers.

One 1 side, i totally agree, constructive or corrective feedback is always welcome.

on the other, even Jared on his quickfire critiques, i feel is forcing the feedback, and is finding fault.

  • hello butterfly!

  • Can we make a community video with people just saying "FROKNOWSPHOTO(dot)com"?

  • Absolutely agree! Thank you for your rant!!

  • nomamesesoqueee ¬¬

  • This is a great video.

    :L

  • Great video!

  • please explain to me wat composition is?

  • @leo3604 Photo Composition is the act of combining graphic elements to create a visual structure or it’s the product generated by this act. (What makes a photographic look good) Google "Photographic Composition" for a more detailed explanation

  • @leo3604 just what u have in your shot. Going off his example, like where is the sun, what else is in the photo, is everything centered, where is your focus, etc

  • Nice video.

  • press 9 really fast for a afro scratch and kermit the frog noise

  • I've written rants about this before.... It does bug me that people basically have no clue 95 percent of the time on how to say anything constructive about created imagery.

I have work on flickr 1000 "amazing shot" comments on various photos in the span of a few minutes just post/look at photos there.

*** Actually I don't have much of a problem with that itself. What I do hate is that people get very defensive when you actually try to leave constructive comments on other's images.

  • @martinaee Not everyone is asking for a critique on flickr though, bear this in mind...

  • @arubaforever I understand not everyone is looking for critique. And a lot of people put more personal photos up which is great. But there are a lot of more advanced photographers and professional photographers who are putting their specific work up to be seen for a reason. I'd say those photographers SHOULD be looking for more than 10,000 "amazing/awesome/great shot/wow/unbelievable" comments. Maybe it IS just the art school speaking in me, but everybody should be more constructive lol.

  • @martinaee Fair enough but; as I said not everyone wants it which we have to accept. Im 50:50 on critiques of photographs. Sometimes it's just people's opinion that doing a) would be better. This is at the end of the day an art form. That said I do enjoy a good critique.

  • Why there ain't the Yellow I Shoot Raw in the store? ç.ç

  • i don't like your video. :))) classic comment

  • I really dislike how people join, with only 2 or 3 posts, asking about how their photos went and then never bother to help the community any further. Also people who do not even adhere to the rules!

  • From my experience, most people tend to respond to color and content rather then composition.

  • Its that butterfly again.

  • This is only relevant when showcasing to fellow photographers though, i.e posting in the fro forum, when showcasing work on the likes of facebook where mainly friends and family are on there, you cant really expect more than "great pic", i agree we can help each other out within the photography community , but i think as a whole, its not that practical.

  • But I dont know shit, so i will simply like something and not give advice. With that said.......I like dirt......

  • I don't really comment on anyone's photo's unless they ask me directly. I may like a photo and share it with a friend but I hardly ever comment.

  • Awesome video capture! *faved*

  • i like how the light falls on his hair. i like how it is composed following the rule of thirds. and the color of the video is kind of in the same family: green, yellow, yellowish green, and blue too.

  • Good video. Thanks for putting out the word that more constructive criticism is needed. Helping and teaching each other is how we improve. Don't be a hater :)

  • rant rant rant hello butterfly... LMAO!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't like the fact you use off-centering as a crutch. Just like this video. You are way off to the left. It's done so often, it's cliche. No harm in centering the subject, even now and again. Thanks.

  • @cbj101 He was using rule of thirds Video! this is pro video.

  • I half agree this the points you made, on the first point, all photographers want to be unique, and get better.

But with comments or "Corrective criticism", i feel that people when they are asked what they think, in my experience around 70% or even more, force criticism, they find something wrong with the photograph. I think even you do this on some quick fire critiques.

But in the end, all these people who say they don't owe an explanation to anyone. Thats not a great attitude to have.

  • I disagree Jared. I don't feel I owe anyone any explanation for my opinion on a piece of art. "I like it/it sucks" is sufficient. Even if I gave a more complete explanation, it would still be my opinion, which doesn't/shouldn't mean a goddamn thing to anyone but me..

  • this kind of video turns me off.

  • Well said, Jared..

  • Places like flickr are full of that kind of useless fluff. That and the kitty icons and this picture has been added to so and so blah blah blah garbage. Its like myspace doodie.

  • "I like this video"

    Just to be ironic..

  • Mobile phones have ruined photography. Take a picture of a random object, add an effect through instagram and post it every, and count the likes..

  • @evilrobotz i totally agree with.

  • anyone uses gimp, i need some good gimp tutorials.

  • @jh3835 Youtube has tons of GIMP tutorials. Just do a search.

  • I like this video.

  • Jared should sell his hair

  • Where do I goto to see photos to comment on ??.....Also I have a couple of photos I wouldnt mind a critic on, wheres the best place to post my photos to have them commented on?

  • I saw nice shot all the time to my wife, even though the crappy hipstamatic app basically ruined the photo. also I don't want to get in a argument because some people really suck with criticism but maybe im a purest

  • "Hello butterfly~" LOL! :D

  • I think this was a great video..... because....., if not for this video, I would have probably said just good video!

  • respect Jared. thumbs up

  • Great Rant Jared! I feel the same way........If I post a photo somewhere I would love to have something besides "Great Shot!" Tell me why you think it's great, Or if you dont like it tell me how you would make it better. And by the way.... Dont be affraid to ask questions, never stop learning.

  • You should try posting to flickr.com/groups/censorshipsucks.

  • GREAT VIDEO...

    LOL

  • ur hair is glowing. it looks like you have a mini fro with like a plastic bag full of air over that mini fro

  • @BretTriano haha, it does look like you have fake snow on the top of your hair or gray hair because of the sun.

  • My instructor would often say the same thing when showing us examples of his photos... "This is my art, and you may not be into the same thing, so let me give you some idea of what I was thinking here..." There are no rules that cannot be broken or even fully ignored. For example: saying, "I don't crop my photos," is fine (and a personal choice), but saying, "Photos should not be cropped" sounds ridiculous... subtle difference in wording, but important.

  • Couldn't agree more, Jared. Strange thing is I tend to get more thoughtful comments from my non-photographer friends as they don't know as much about photography, so often go out of their way to explain what it is they like about a photo. I think it shows how much the way we communicate has changed with the internet and cell phones as well. Maybe we need a "Say What You Think" shirt to go with "I Shoot Raw". I'd buy one!

  • I like the composition of this video because you used a large enough aperture to throw the beautiful field and trees in the background out of focus, further directing viewer's attention toward you! Great DOF! (How's that for constructive and informative feedback?) :)

  • I like the composition of this video. Great use of the rule of 3rd - you are not centered in the middle of the shot, good use of natural light, and good use of Depth of field - the trees are not distracting us from watching you. Great video!

  • @MrChelove Hadn't seen yours and just said essentially the same thing minutes afterward. I didn't take notice of the rule of thirds however, nice observation!

  • I think most people are like me, feel inferior to people posting. I feel if I say anything other than GREAT SHOT, I'll say something stupid.

  • *friends'

  • I like your message, however, I used to leave photo criticism comments on my friends photos and they just got mad at me. Rofl.

  • helloo butterfly lol

  • Great Video, loved the green grass in the background to get to the next level try to make it look blue :D

  • Hi Jared, loving your videos and site and totally agree with what you're saying here. Just got into photography in the past month so still mid way through a very steep learning curve! I've tried to create a forums account on your site so that I can get some tips and hints from the community but I'm not getting a registration e-mail. I've checked that I put my details in propperly - any idea's why this might be happening? Thanks

  • RANT - Commenting on peoples photos ) there must be a lot of people as you have put S on People ...

  • Im completely agree with jared on this one, Im a full time photography student in Montreal and if you cant handle criticism from the teachers then you wont last very long

  • Couldn't agree more with this. I'm guilty of this myself every now and then, we all are somewhat. But I worry that while I'm up for helping with technical 'suggestions', a lot of people take it the wrong way. Especially on the internet people get very defensive very easily, I've found that people will ignore the praise I've given in a comment and concentrate on the fact that I said 'You could have done this...'. It's a tricky one but I'm totally with you, down with 'Nice capture' 'Lovely DOF'...

  • Great rant.

  • Nice vid

    XD

  • Thank you so much for this. I'm in photography school right now and have been dealing with the vague criticism. I think this video could help my fellow classmates and myself. Thanks you

  • I agree but most of people don't like telling them that there's something wrong in their photos because they think you are telling them that you are better than them. for example once i told someone you should have exposed for the face, not the background, so he said he likes it the way it is so ........

  • Jared i agree with your rant, evertime i show my mrs a photo she says "thats nice babe" but when i ask her to tell me why she says "oh i dont know babe, its just nice". This really ticks me off because it would be nice to now what it is about the photo that she likes, unfortunately there are many peopple just like my mrs and consequently it leaves serious photographers devoid of appraisal or constructive criticism. Hopefully people will change after watching your vid, respect.

  • i agree but ive often expanded on some of my friends photos just commenting on their photo and bloody hell they literally tell me to sod off what would i know ...nothin much only 22 years of photography experience lol

  • I agree Facebook and Flickr to a certain degree are a bit different, but 500px is what has reset the bar my two cents

  • @MelvinOdellTucker 500px is much better than flickr.

  • I agree with you Jared, Lets go to the next level and really give feedback.

  • You should watch how pros comment on photos on the DigitalREV videos on the The Internet's Most Talented Photographer. To think that more than 80% of digital photos are taken with Mobile Phones, it says a lot of how much people know about photography or want to know. Each time i show my photos to my friends they say "wow, how did you do this?" than i explain the camera, lens, focus depth etc... and then they say that don't have the time or bother to hold a heavier camera. That says a lot. :-)

  • I go to photography school and my bitch of a teacher doesn't even give constructive criticism she just critisizes

  • jared, consider this - if someone is not really a photographer and doesnt have much of an idea about what makes an image strong or weak but just by looking at the image something is trigeered inside them which causes them to like/dislike it. . does it mean they should not comment on it . .many a times I see an image and I cannot pinpoint a particular thing that i like/dislike about it. .guess what everyone hasnt gone thru photography school/art school in their life. .

  • I agree. Facebook is a bit different, unless if you're pro photographer and have a like page. But personal is different because people don't know photography usually. Lol but I love Flickr.

  • Most people in Facebook don't know photography lol.. if they like it, then they like it . If they don't, they don't. :D

  • @DavidBarcelona1 nice post!:)ahahah!

  • @DavidBarcelona1 You don't really have to know about photography though. "I like this photo because of the way the light looks" "or I like this photo because you really captured that person's expression well". They don't need to know the technical terms for things in order to give a good critique of a photo they like.

  • Guilty as charged!!! I will do better in the future. Thanks Jared for opening my eyes. You are correct in saying this because I too would like to see more of a comment than just "Nice Capture" on my stuff but I am guilty of leaving a short and sweet comment on others work. I AM A BAD BAD MAN!!! I will change starting NOW!

  • HULLO BUTTERFLY.

    :3

  • Pretty much people are assholes

  • Totally agree. I was at a camera club competition one night years ago when the 'judge' looked at a print and said "if I could only say one word about this print, it would be, next". I think if I had to describe that 'judge' with one word, it would probably be, prick.

  • I noticed something strange in this video while i was watching it, suddenly i realised that you've placed yourself in the side of the video and i was like "i can't belive i haven't noticed that in the beginning" lol

  • I'll just say "BOKEHLICIOUS" if I like the depth of field.

  • @PaperWeight231 Depth of field isn't bokeh

  • @AgentC00l but there were generally be Bokeh in a depth of field shot, which is what I'm getting at.

  • Great video ;)

  • Great points! I think it's also important to not too frequently give elaborate comments, because you'll be seen as a wise-ass :) Just start with the ones that really have potential.

If possible, I found that criticism works best in real life, when you can actually discuss directly, look the other in the eyes, and you trust the people you're talking with. Make a selection of your photos and discuss them one by one. I have some friends that do that with me, I'm glad they can be pretty harsh :)

  • on the forum i one saw a picture of a monument i also took so i posted my image and said, "hey, here is my version of it, personally i like my angle better what do you think" all i got was minus karma points and critique because i "invaded" the post with my images... i tought compare similar images was better than writing "nice pic"... that's my rant, i have my parents to say my pictures are nice

  • nice video

  • Been through art school, I know exactly what you're talking about Jared. I'd like to hear what's strong about my images, or what's weak about it. What I could improve on, etc. I think a lot of people rely on the word "like" too much. I'd rather hear the words, strong, and weak. Since the word "like" is too subjective. Comments on the composition, color, and aesthetics of the photo tend to help me a lot more than say "i like it because such and such is good".

    Nice rant

  • Butterfly bokeh!

  • Agreed because a lot of people say that not only to my photos but, also my videos such as my covers and reviews

  • Good video Jared :-) because I like the rule of thirds you put into perspective when filming :D and informative of course.

  • Forums are usually self gratification, they just want people to 'pat them on the back' and tell them how great they are.

I give pointers and tell them what they could do to improve, that's the whole point.

  • I couldn't agree more. People seem to think three words are enough to explain how and what they feel towards an image, they are wrong. I like to see someone post a long comment explaining what can be improved.

  • totally agree.

  • Nice said.

  • good video.

  • fro knos photo!!!
