  • Cracking video and idea - Well Done!

  • @cologne2792 Thanks :-)

  • i remember my dad had an XR3 when i was a kid, now times gone by and im 20 i drive a XR2 fiesta, lovin the retro ford! carb FTW pisses on my mates xr2i :)

  • @schifano01 Nice. We're relying on your generation to keep these Fords alive.

  • Well made video. Thanks.

  • Great stuff.

  • This was my first car 4 speed in black none injection on a x plate, as I remember the non injection cars were quicker than the new xr3i.

Thanks for the vid pal :)

  • @jefferzzz31 Well, the XR3 (Mk3) was 9.1 secs top speed 113mph. XR3i (Mk3) was 8.9 secs top speed 115mph. Heavier XR3i (Mk4) was 9.5 secs top speed 115mph according to my book. Thanks for your comments.

  • My uncle used to have a Xr3 but like everything he has he never looked after it. Shame because it was a great motor! :)

  • nice video!!!

  • thats fken mint that,,best old skool uk car ever ;)

  • @gtinutter1 Thanks!

  • @Calvertfilm nice car mate you said in your video you have got all orginal parts on the car, what work have you done on the car and what mileage is it

  • @jass355 Thanks. I got the first car in 1986 on 20k miles. All I have done is cleaned it up therefore. It has needed zero restoration. I've painted a few original screws that were trying to rust and that's about it. I never did many miles in it, so it is still very low (I'd rather not say). The second one I got in 2008, and this needed a wing, some rust repair on the rear valence and rear wing, and has needed some replacement parts. It is on nearly 100k miles. Yet it stil won a trophy in 2011.

  • @Calvertfilm how much was the xr3 brand new in those days

  • @jass355 When the XR3 first came out in 1980 it was just over £5,100.

  • @Calvertfilm has your xr3 got a 4 or 5 speed gearbox.

  • @jass355 The low mileage one is a 5 speeder, the other one a 4 speeder.

  • i wishd id had some day white escort xr3 white 1983 and whie escort mk2 rs1800 1977 and an rs2000 1976 black and 1985 escort xr3 mkIII Model and an sierra cosworth 1987 and 1988 model and 1989 modeld white sierra cosworth an 1987 sierra cosworth xr3 black with bbs and rs1600 white 1972

  • the xr3i mk3 was the best thats why ive got one 39k standard ,xr3s run too high on the springs , fuel injections always 10 times more reliable than wheezzy old carbs ,i find the door cards tacky too lol

  • @lilshan83 Personally I prefer the XR3. I've had several of each but the 3i is too refined. The carb model brings a smile to my face with its harder ride, and heavier steering. Also it was the very first XR in the UK. No other type can be the first.

  • im buying an xr3 over here in uruguay and i must say its such a good looking car but i would like to tune it. I was wondering though, i think the rims on the xr3 are the most suitable for the car but maybe someone can tell me other rims that would also look good.... and cheers to the video man great work on keeping the escort alive

  • Freeserve, old skool.

  • @pretendaccount1 Can you have one? LOL - well I'll think about it :-) But to be fair I do put the hours in keeping them this way. I've had the first one since 1986. The second one was meant to be a long term donor but it was too good for that so I did it up. Need a third one now! Thanks for your comments. I'm making a Mk1 Golf GTI XR3 Mk3 Escort comparison video next month all being well. Stay tuned :-)

  • Superb!

  • how have you managed to keep it like that dont you use it much?

  • @jaggass There are 2 cars there. With LYP you are correct - I don't use it much. I have only done 6,000 miles since 1986 in it. It is now in long term storage so I don't get an idiot crash into the back of it or something like that. I am keeping it for our nation's heritage and I just enjoy owning it and looking at it.

The other car YNO I do use and currently take to car shows (was at Duxford yesterday). This car has done 99k miles, so I don't mind using it so much. Best of both worlds.

  • @Calvertfilm Thats a MK III Escort from the early 80s nice video

  • nice one mate.

  • @jaggass Cheers.

  • I remember in the eighties when the XR3s and XR3is were quite common and popular among IT geeks and such. The last time I saw a carb version of the XR3 was, believe it or not, in late 1996. It was a red W reg one so it was an earliest model and probably was scrapped along time ago. I know what it's like buying a second vehicle of the same and then falling in love with it and doing that up as well. I've been there, seen it, done it. LOL. My brother had a mk4 XR3i tuned up to the b******s.

  • @1100HondaCB LOL, yeah I need a third car now :-)

  • @Calvertfilm Another XR3 maybe. A W reg one perhaps, if any are about that is! Or maybe an A reg Astra GTE as its rival. Grandad always said Ford was a good make and I think he was right. Fords will last if you look after them, but many people don't and allow them to fall into desrepair.

  • @1100HondaCB Apparently there are about 62 carb versions on the road but I reckon about as many sorned. One of mine is. I tend to agree with your thoughts about people not looking after them. These cars had such a bad rep at one point that people probably never saw them as future classics either. Now they are rare, and their street cred has returned. But too late to get a very good one that easily.

  • @Calvertfilm About early last year I saw two X reg Escort 1.3L five door hatches on the road. It was a pleasure to see them and they seemd in good condition. When I see cars like a mk1 Astra or mk1 Cav or mk3 Escort it brings me so much joy. Motoring nostalgia is a powerful emotion, don't you think? As you say, back in the eighties/nineties, the mk3 Escort was never seen as a future classic, but now becoming quite sought after. Do you ever think the mk1 Mondeo will ever become a future classic?

  • @1100HondaCB Personally I think any popular car of its time has the potential to become a future classic, because so many people will remember it. This was what I was thinking in 1986 when I first got my XR3. I wanted to preserve it. From what you are saying that thought seems correct, as memories/nostalgia are powerful things as you say. But it still surprises me how much street cred these cars have these days - even more than I would have expected. So I say 'yes' to the Mondeo :-)

  • @Calvertfilm I had a mk2 Mondeo (face lift mk1) when I was a cabbie and it always reminded me of a mk3 Cortina. I guess you can see a fair resemblence betwwen the two. So in twenty years or so, when the mk1/mk2 Mondeos are about thirty years old plus, and quite rare, many people will see these cars as a reminder of their earlier motoring days and so will be quite sought after. I quite like Mondeos, but not the mk4. The Kinetic design concept doesn't appeal to me.

  • The xr3's are a real credit to you mate and i'm very very jealous! I looked around a while back to buy one but could not find anything other than total scrappers. What i would give to own one.....

  • @gizagonk Well they come around occasionally. But with only 62 Mk3 XR3s on the road (so it is said) and 132 Mk3 injection models, the pickings are slim.

  • thanks for the memories, back in the day i had a white x reg xr3 with same interior but with red stripes and loved every Minuit of owning it..was also a babe magnet!!

  • @PureEvil122 He, he, I wouldn't let babes in my cherished car - they might dirty the seats LOL. Glad you got some memories coming back.

  • top video mate ,,acording to the dvla theres only 60 xr3 left ,,not 3i,,,,orignal xr3s ,,got to 3is myself as like you i bought the 2nd one to use then i started playing with it,,,,,,,were sad hey lol

    colin xroc north west

  • @colinraycyrus68 Excellent - I'm not on my own then having two - one to use, one to store :-) You keep the injections then, and I'll do the carbs LOL. I used to be in the XROC but not these days. In days gone by I found the club too clicky. I'm now part of the Powered By Ford forum - friendly bunch.

Yes, last I heard only 62 XR3s registered in the UK. Amazing when you think they made 25,550 of the carb versions in the UK. Details from the 'Enthusiasts Companion' book.

  • sorry for my error

i wanted the name of the song at 4.04

  • @ilricki97 'The Chief' by Tony Scott - a classic!

  • what's the song at 3.35?

    it' s very exclusive car

    it's better than golf gti

  • @ilricki97 'I'm a Wild One' by Iggy Pop. Yeah, I much prefer it to the boring-looking Golf :-)

  • Blue Monday by New Order. Cheers :-)

  • whats the song at 2.00? please ta wicked car mate. wish had one like that blesses

  • davidmclaren71@yahoo.co.uk Great video man extremely well done mate unfortunately i have never had the pleasure of owning one of these vehicles when i started driving car insurance went the ceiling 1989 so i just had crapy fiestas & basic escorts & never managed to get to beautiful examples like yourself Thanxs for the memories : )

  • @SCORPIOV24 Thanks for the comments. Yeah the insurance companies did put paid to them. Even the boy racers couldn't quite do that LOL.

  • nice film mate and stunning cars.when i was 17/18 i wanted an xr3, but never got one. 3 years ago i found a tidy xr3i cabby, which ive still got and it love her to bits.

  • @joyce02 Great stuff - look after her - there are not many left now.

  • Great film mate.. I had an identical xr3 back in 1991 Reg no RWJ 546X. All i have left are 2 pictures of it... I have a Triumph Stag now but still would love to have another xr3 the same.. Such a top car of its time and so many good memories for me and my was girlfriend now wife.. Thanx ;0)

  • @Jasonhaynzy Stag is a great Brit car. Nice. Glad this brought back some memories for you, and thanks for the comments. Apparently there are only 62 XR3 (carb versions) registered in the UK with the DVLA right now. Amazing when you think there were so many a long time ago.

  • Lovely motors mate and excellent video rare as hens teeth to find a nice one now and you have two! Credit to you mate

  • @Telbo1 Thank you :-)

  • @Calvertfilm do you know whats the difference between the escort rs 1600i and the xr3i.

  • @jass355 Well quite a bit with both the running gear and cosmetically too. Your best bet is to search the net or find a suitable book. But for example the rear wings are different, and the front spoilers, seats, engine components, steering wheel, and other things. My two carb XR3s were registered in 1981 and Sept 1982, and at the time were the top of the range. The 1600i didn't come out until the very end of 1982, and the Turbo later still. The 3i in 1983.

  • I'm 15 But I've Just Always Had A Fascanation With 80's Fords Especially Capri's And XR3's And Would Love At Least One By The Age of 22. I'd Rather Push An XR3 Or Capri Than Drive The Crap They Churn Out Now!

  • @TheSecondComing1789 Well, if I may, just one piece of advice if you get one. Try getting a low mileage example that has been looked after. A 100K car that has had several owners won't perform as sharp as a 25K example with 2 careful owners. I know that from experience. In that decade cars wore out and rusted quicker. So keep an eye on the oil, and the bodywork etc. Having said that they are classics now, and turn heads. A Capri or XR3 will not disappoint you.

  • @TheSecondComing1789 As you are only 15,can i make a suggestion,if you have somewhere to keep a car for the next couple of years, try & find a good example now,as prices of Mk3s are going up,you only have to look at how the price of Mk1 & Mk2 escorts have gone through the roof to see that Mk3s will follow..

Do not be put off buying a low spec model like a 1.3 as insurance will be cheaper for you as a learner & as most parts are interchangeable from the XR & RS range you can slowly upgrade it.

  • Long time storage, dry inviroment? Is it garage, or museum?

  • @KGWOLF77 Well it was museum, then secure lock-up with other vehicles, now in talks with museums again.

  • @Calvertfilm you got alarm in the car is it standard?

  • @jass355 Immobilised, alarmed, Neighbourhood watched, in a secure place, the lot :-) People still try to nick these. Also I know my local police really well and they know my cars. The alarm/immobilsers could easily be removed and the car brought back to factory standard. Just an add-on.

  • Man you lucky sod hard to find a solid old ford these days,i currently own a fiesta rs turbo murcery grey with 78 on the clock and a good floor pan no welding, you got two very nice classics there credit to you.

  • @hoodnut197 Cheers mate. I was lucky to find YNO as I bought this one in 2008. But LYP I bought in 1986 and in those days most of them were still solid - Just about :-)

  • Jon, I don't have two of each of them but I feel the exact same way about my Dodges - Omni GLH and Spirit R/T! You're a real car guy! I hope you enjoy them forever. Thanks for sharing this.

  • @91dodgespiritrt Enjoy your dodges too!

  • much beautifull.........eu tenho um no brazil em minas gerais.....

  • The warning light down second from the left, what does it mean? I've got no owner's manual.

  • @MafiaGN260 It means low washer bottle level. The five lights mean (left to right) brakes, washer bottle, oil, radiator, fuel.

  • @Calvertfilm Incidentally, they were known to sometimes tell lies. Often these (new fangled for the eighties) warning systems would flash these warning lights, even when the levels were ok. So a flashing light doesn't always mean a low level. A solid light staying on means it is empty. And when you first switch on the ignition, all of the lights should come for a few seconds to show the bulbs are working.

  • @Calvertfilm : Thanks alot! i was beginning to think that there is something seriously wrong with my car. i love it too much and i want to keep it as long as it can last. What about the resevoir like on the left side of the trunk? is it a rear washer bottle? thanx!

  • @MafiaGN260 Good to hear you want to keep yours. And yes it is a rear washer bottle.

  • 2:49 Stormtroopers!!! LOL!

  • @RSTBADBOY Why? the XR3 is a rarer car!

  • @RSTBADBOY I prefer the look of the XR3.

  • Comment removed

  • @jass355 It started as a Mk3 Escort.

  • @jass355 It comes in Mk3 form onwards.

  • @jass355 It comes in Mk3 form and then went to XR3i as a later Mk3, and remains the 3i onwards after that as Mk4 etc.

  • @Calvertfilm do you think the xr3 is better or the xr3i

  • @jass355 Interesting question. I've owned several of each - three Mk3 XR3s, and Mk3 XR3i, a Mk4 XR3i, a Mk5 XR3i, and a 1600i. For me I prefer the rough ride of the early XR3s because they seem less refined and more fun. They are a touch slower on paper but when I took mine to Santa Pod RWYB the carb car was fastest by a second (because it was in better nick). So condition counts for a lot. Plus the carb cars were the first XRs and more popular than the RSTs. So for me I prefer the XR3. Iconic.

  • @Calvertfilm how have you kept the car so clean it looks like its just come out of the factory brand new also whats the mileage on the car.

  • @jass355 Thanks. One car is on 26k the other on 98k but both run well. It all depends how they have been looked after. Both cars are 'original' cars, so they still have many 25 year-old components on them put on by Fords, rather than being 'concorse' or 'restored' cars that have 1 year-old parts put on by Joe Bloggs. To me that is the way I prefer, but both types of cars look great. Restored cars look newer really. I guess after 25 years they would not. I'm not knocking restored though.

  • @Calvertfilm do you think ford should bring back the xr brand back.

  • @jass355 Yeah, sure, as long as the car is worthy. What do you think?

  • @Calvertfilm i suppose ford repalced it with the st brand but i think ford should bring back the cosworth engine

  • @jass355 Sounds good to me.

  • @Calvertfilm has your xr3 got a 5 speed or 4 speed gearbox.

  • @jass355 I have one of both types.

  • monkeys brother had one of these , we used to go to kentucky in it ;-)

  • Love the xr3 the clover alloys have always caught my eye they are just great. Looks like one of the tidiest mk3 xr3's ive ever seen! Well done on that should be pleased with her.

  • @Englandforever91 Cheers. These cars are part of our countries heritage, so I'm proud to be looking after them.

  • @Calvertfilm have u replaced the oil filter and battery as it is motorcraft of is it factory orginal.

  • @jass355 On YNO they are replaced. I think they are on the other one too. Pretty sure they were. Not healthy to run the cars for years on the original ones. But I do know of a car that did zero miles and was taken off the production line. It still has the same battery, filters and even air in the tyres I believe. Not only that, it was the one millionth example too - of a Corvette. You can't beat that! Amazing.

  • Great video and two great cars.

Is the stereo the original one?, I thought the digital tune was introduced a lot later on?

  • @phil3012 Yes you are indeed correct. Well spotted. The digital one you see here in LYP was available in 1986, the year I got the car. But I do have in storage two 1982 radios and an LED radio cassette dating from 1982 (the top of the range ESRT32PS). So they could always be put in but I prefer the 1986 model.

YNO has a much newer CD/radio fitted but again I have an old radio in storage for that car too.

  • @Calvertfilm Thought so, we had a 1984 Granada Ghia X Exec with the manual tune and our 1986 XR3i was had the digital tune.

You need to have one modern luxury in a car :-)

It's nice to see mint original Fords, too many of the apparently 'original' examples have blacken lights/white indicators which spoil them.

  • @phil3012 Modified cars are interesting but I prefer original too.

LYP has an alarm system added (which could be removed) and a stainless exhaust to the same spec as original (so it looks and sound the same just lasts longer). And a 1982 radio in storage. So that is about as 1982 as you can get.

YNO has Cibie spots, Gmax springs, radio in storage, an immobiliser fitted (that could be removed but is invisible), newer style tread pattern in the tyres. That's about it.

  • I love the Escort Mk3's!

    I have an '82 Mk3 1.3L. Currently restoring it.

  • @kazimann Good luck with that. Not many around.

  • @linn1000 Cheers. I'm taking one of them for a spin today!

  • 2 mint examples ! I had 2 German built XR3's in a row in the late 90's. The first a blue Y reg, then a much better silver 5 speed X reg ( DYA 16X ) , with a RS1600i interior. Loved them , they were solid, so easy to work on and looked good.

  • old american escorts are garbage. Thats actually pretty cool.

  • nice vid and nice car,.take good care it,. i have a 1,3 c-model from 1989.

    5outa5 + fav

  • @nofgood4live Cheers. Take care of your too. Getting rare now.

  • @Calvertfilm i sure gona do :)

back in the day, those rides where for the "poor"peoples.

and yes i ownt a few of those then,.

now a days u dont see them mutch,.

    have a nice day

  • @nofgood4live Yeah. Funnily enough I drove past a ghia Mk3 yesterday. A rare occurance as you say. Last week drove past a Cortina Mk5. It is like being part of a secret club, waving at each other or flashing lights. Cool.

  • @Calvertfilm yeah u are so right,. LOL no carina driver, greeds each other,.

i have usa ford also, and with them its the same.

just like u are saying, its a onwriten rule, and loving the same hobby.

  • Very good :)

  • show de bola ........lindisimo carro eternamente xr3 grandes brasileiros rodou por aqui de 1984 a 1986

  • How do u remove \ change the gearknob on this car? PLEASE HELP

  • @MafiaGN260 I think you just unscrew it.

  • lucas or bosch . mint sexy cars by the way

  • @upthedirttrack One of each I believe. Ta!

  • i did liked it ;)

  • cool love thes cars but the rs turbo takes my breth away

  • The ford XR's and RS's from the 70's onwards are ALL brilliant cars, true definitions of the word car. I've got RS's but am also a fan or the XR's, especially XR2 fezzy

  • whats the music name what starts from 0:50 and ends in 1:57

  • The Kraken by N-Joi - it is an old hit probably from the late eighties or early nineties.

  • Thanks!

  • @Calvertfilm hey man am do the xr3,s have points ignition or electronic?

  • Most cars went to electronic in the seventies. I don't know for sure. Anyone else know? It has a coil, distributor etc. I'm not sure which type of ignition. My mechanic would know.

  • Just had a look - electronic.

  • if your ignition gives trouble and causes the car misfire or even stall then its more then likeley points

  • Thats a great film!! My 1st proper car was an `84 XR3i in blue when I was 21. The insurance was then £220 3rd party, F&T. Quite cheap at the time, but then a few years later car theft went through the roof, what with all the hot hatches being made bu the different car companies. I loved that car so much my next car was an `87 XR3i in black. That was mint. Both very reliable cars and cheap to maintain.

  • @coltsuperocean10 Yeah, I love them too. I've had seven now. Still own these two. Something about them. Thanks for your comments and glad it brought back some memories.

  • Fantastis too see these 2 pristine example s getting very rare now I have A1 1.3 L 1981 5 door Mk3 s are the best

  • @goodmatt73 Very cool. Keep up the good work!

  • WOW 1.3 L 5 door MK3 is my Dream car!

My father had this car 8 years ago...

  • Refreshing video! Great to see you talking & acting like an adult. 99.9% of videos would have shown the car been flung around & abused by a silly boy racer. Lovely car, by the way. Well done.

  • Many thanks. Nice to have an appreciative comment. Cheers.

  • ace vid mate. I'm considering buying a xr3 mk3 but, after owning a mk1 and mk2, im worried that because its FWD is wont be as fun. Is this true or is it just bull?

  • A Mk3 won't drift for you of course unless you drive it in reverse! You can get a bit of wheelspin when turning too, as traction is lost. Also on the early cars the suspension is jolty but for me this adds to the fun. Quirky but fun.

On the track they come into their own.

Also, when I take my Mk3 to shows I get lots of great comments from people because they used to own one, or can relate to it in some way. Seems to get noticed more than most.

    See what others say....

  • thanks mate. When you say "Jolty" is it uncomfortable, or is it just something you can have fun with?

  • Fun with a capital F.

  • good thanks, my friends selling one and i might buy it.

  • Great video! My two Mk3s are still going strong after 282,000 & 180,000 miles!!

Just been using the estate to tow a few of those one ton bags of brick rubble and soil around as i am doing my drive, done around ten trips with the trailer and a load in the boot too!

    Didnt miss a beat!

  • 280K and 180K! Amazing. I've never heard of any Escorts going further than those. Wonderful to hear. Why not contact AutoExpress with that as a story? I reckon they would do an article, as it is something different. My car's been in there. You never know.

  • Hi Fella fabulous motors, keep them alive! According to the DVLA there are only 70 MK III Escort XR3's left running in the UK! Out of interest how did you protect the underside of your motors? Waxyoiling? As they are a notorious rotters here, Ford's rust proofing method (at the time, and similar to most manufacturers) was a thin layer of wax and a lick of paint, so it was easily corroded by our salty roads and wet climate. Anyway keep up the great work! -Regards Fast Ford Enthusiast

  • Thanks for your comments. For one of my cars (LYP) the solution was simple - I never take it out in the rain! I got caught in the rain occasionally over the years but always headed straight home and dried it off. Sounds a bit sad but it has paid dividends now - that car has zero rust. Plus it was waxoiled too. For the other one (YNO) it does have a little rust underneath but nothing much. It have since cleaned it off and painted it up. Now that car doesn't see rain either.

  • nice video i got 1 sunburst red and crazy about it too.all original standard keep it up mate here from malta

  • good work m8 i got mk3 too brill fun o restore and im only 16

  • brill vid m8 i only 16 and have spent last 2 yeARS restoring my mk3 escort ghia but not to standard conditon as its a mk3 but has lots or rs turbo parts on it and xr3i engine but it in perfect condition to

  • Great film, great car! I know what is is to have a good conserved XR3. I drove over 3000 miles this year and it was a fun. Especially the turning heads when you drive by. I have to make a film and post it on youtube.

  • the best ford ever

  • im gonna buy another one..loved my xr3, sold it for 250 quid, two years later its worth £5000, still, its not about the money with those beuties

  • And again, snow+salt= dead escort. I know it! because my last MK3 1.3l died from bottom rust!

  • Don't worry. One of them hasn't seen water for years, and lives in a secure place with a dehumidifier operating.

The one I drive may sometimes get caught in the rain but it is protected underneath.

    Thanks for the tip though.

  • Great car, i love Escorts mk3 too, please save it! All Escort have one big problem, they start rust at the bottom. Bottom must me protected with special plastic, as like VW GOLF 2.

  • another great video

  • wheres that at 0:50

apart from that recognise most places :)

  • Bretons Farm. In 1986.

  • nice its a good video you should try more of these

  • it's where Queens hospital now sits m8
