God bless the rescue workers. Says allot about the other driver too, takes a hell of a human being to jump into harms way to save another person's life.
I remember that crash. I also purchased a vehicle from Gay Pontiac in League City, Texas (owned by Don Gay I believe). I remember seeing all of the drag racing memorabilia from the crash in the dealership. If I'm not mistaken, the Gay family also owns HRP in Baytown which is one of my favorite tracks of all time.
@boomer1991 I am guessing that Don Gay senior was the Don Gay that won the 1963 Winternationals in a Pontiac Catalina (which by the way there is video of it on here of it running on a Dyno)...Guess that is why Jr. is also driving a Pontiac...Pontiacs forever!!!
Wow, I am flattered (or embarrasssed) that someone actually put this video on here, I have actually never seen this version and/or the commentary. I am the guy in the car and yes I am still alive and well... Donny
this video clip is a much condensed versionof all that took place. the network that covered this event, the now defunct TNN, taped the entire rescue performed by NHRA's safety team. If not for their efforts, Don Gay Jr. could have died. The whole process took longer than this 1 minute clip shows. Thats why it was on Rescue 9-1-1.
oh he crashed!
driver: oh shit
Narrator: he won!
