Although I disapprove of Primark's ethics, I equally diapprove of your arrogance, sewlf indulgence, and your apparent lack of concern for the real issue here
Why do people still buy clothes from these heartless giants??
The cotton farming chemicals KILL people!
The production of the materials used can cause physical injury and severe mental distress! - this is before the sewing by 6year old slaves even begins!(and yes they are slaves by definition of the word!)
If you can't afford to spend more than a quid on a top, then maybe you should be working harder to afford one! Our min wage is 5.52per hour, in India some earn 15p a day - WAKE UP!
Yes things are cheaper in India, but a family still needs to be able to have shelter, clean water, sanitation, education, and health care. These are basic rights.
Pretty much every garment made and sold now is from those 'heartless giants'. All the big names like Primark, Gap, Marks & Spencer, River Island even the designer brands like D&G, Emporio Armani, Stone Island... they're all 'heartless giants'. All they're clothes are made in Far East sweatshops.
IMO the only way to avoid supporting them, is to buy second hand and vintage clothing.
The Indian caste system off greed and coruption leaves them like this, its the governments faults across the world that allow this to happen. its no different than Zimbabwe. IM boycoting everything Indian, Chinese and this store.
I also find it funny how they kept saying these workers get the eqivenlent of 50p a day
they get paid in rupees they get paid slightly less than the indain national minumum wage but 2 draw the viewer in 2 have an effect on us they use they use the 50p factor to make us feel the workers r hard done by
in reality if they r getting the equivelent of 50p per day tht means in english money even the wealthy people r getting less than the britsh national wage.
this documentry was not 2 highlight the problems but simply 2 bring down primark. Ive never shoped there before but why when they came acrosss other garments tht wernt made by primark they didnt take edvidence or ecord is they just said other european companies or they said this is an american bassed company.
Just watched this programme after recording it and looks like there taking the items outside to give to the children to work on behnd primarks back. Why not open a factory here in the uk so we have some more jobs
You actually make me want to be violently sick. These kids are earning 19p a week, im sure you'd be fucking complaining if you got that pay! You think your doing these kids a favour, by buying Primark's products..get a grip love.
Jeez..get over yourselves, these kids look happy enough. sorry to sound nasty but they complain when they have no money then they complain when they do get money. sorry but i always thought that beggars cant be choosers. my opinion. btw primark is the bomb! (:
These kids are earning 19p a week, im sure you'd be fucking complaining if you got that pay! You think your doing these kids a favour, by buying Primark's products..get a grip love.
I have lived in India for your information and 19p is the approximate equivalent of 16 rupees, which would not even buy you a kilo of rice. Not being skilled or educated enough to be doing the jobs they are doing makes it even more unfair for these children to be doing them! Lets be honest would you be happy, not even earning enough to buy yourself a bag of rice A WEEK? I think its time for you to do the math sweetie.
Let them fight their own way out of poverty. It's India's problem. Not ours !
So many people here in the UK go to work and can not put the clothes on their own back due to our rising gas & electricity prices. . so many are afraid to use their cars now for fear of wasting diesel due to the ridiculous prices. . so many are set to be immersed in fuel poverty this winter. Oh, and don't even get me started on the housing crisis we face.
tbf. if these kids didnt make clothes for shops such as Primark, Nike, Topshop, GAP etc. they would ha zilch money and would just end up dieing of starvation...then there would be a massive report about how they are in poverty so basically we cant win! and why just target Primark? Most shops do it, and you cant physically say those kids sat there and handstitched the sequins on eery single top that you see in pimark, those tops have OBVIOUSLY been manufactured in a factory!
Yes but this documentary is not talking about h&m or topshop or gap, its talking about Primark, + i really don't think the excuse of 'everyone else is doing it' makes exploiting children in third world countries acceptable.
Also the factorys who were using children to make the clothes were shut down promptly. Maybe more children in this country should have a go at working instead of stuffing their faces while playing on game consoles.
Those kids looked rather happy to me. It is not just primark that buys from these factorys, h&m, topshop and gap all use the same supliers. Priamrk gets it in the neck beacuse they are the cheapest. The reason they are cheapest is because they dont advertise, they only sell the most popular sizes and they pay their staff in the stores mininmum wage!
well to be fair, it kept the children off the streets, gave them skills and some money, which without primark wouldn't be possible, may not be a agreeable wage to us uk consumers but im sure the workers knew they had no other choice, or course they deserve better but the biitfer fact at the momnt is that they aren't going to get better.
And on another note primarks clothes ar cheap for another reason they areliterally disposable after one wash, not blaming that on the craftmenship.
One in six children in the world today is involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development.
· Globally, between 210 and 240 million children are child labourers.
· 126 million of these children are engaged in hazardous work
· Every year 22,000 children die in work-related accidents.
· 73 million working children are under 10.
· 5.7 million children are forced into debt bondage or other forms of slavery.
Don't you think that people should start washing thier clothes intead of throwing them away after one use. I think it is so unfair that people who make the clothes, spending time, energy and paitance on hand sitching clothes for a small wage and people are just going to throw them because of tomorrows new fashion. You say you will need cheap shops though the credit crunch lets not forget that it is a world problem, who is going to make your cheap clothes when these people have died of stavation.
ITS NOT PRIMARK FAULT LIKE THEY SAID ON THE END THEY SINGLE THEM OUT BECAUSE OF THEIR SUCCESS WHICH I BELIEVE IS TRUE BECAUSE IT HAPPENS NOT ONLY WITH PRIMARK BUT WITH ALL THE FASHION LABELS OUT THERE ARE DOING THE SAME THING which is wrong but it will always happent these people need money we will never understand it because we are not in their shoes !!!
The fact that in the UK we have only recently outlawed child labour shouldn't count for nought or the fact that legaly mcdonalds and Tescos(or anyone) can employ anyone over 14 or that we pay 16 to 17 year olds legally half that we give adults or that we woud die than pay in pounds in countries where the value of the pound is twice as much as the local currency. Then we say its comparative. £1 is equivalent of £7 in India..but why should we give a toss about these things?
Its so cool that they have fired the company involved and all its workers. Hopefully the children will be able to subsidise their existence and be able to eat via prostitution and begging.Who would want to work with their family at home anyway.
Im sure if they hadn't made evil primark clothes they would be watchign disney channel going to school and playing video games (Or hitting old women in the street with a brolly) The world is now a better place.
primark are disgusting and what disgusts me more how people pretend to care but will go back next week...maybe for them to stop they should see how it feels for one day?that would be to much for them let alone there whole life starting fromn the age of 7
Arghh these liberals get me so angry. If it wasn't for companies utilising cheap labour pools in developing countries then everything would be 10 times the price.
The fact that children work is the fault of their parents, not foreign companies.
Ohhh how very terrible that Primark have had children making their clothes. IT IS NOT PRIMARKS FAULT ITS THE SUB CONTRACTORS. The India government need to put their heads down and sort out a means of support for these children and their families it is not the responsibility of Primark. Primark has been penalised. The vast majority of us shop from Primark and what with the credit crunch we could not do without it. I say THANK GOD FOR PRIMARK!
'Ohhh how very terrible that Primark have had children making their clothes. IT IS NOT PRIMARKS FAULT ITS THE SUB CONTRACTORS.'
It's called corporate responsibility, so Primark is accountable and cannot lay the blame on its contractors. If you have an ethical policy, compliance is your problem. So long as consumers do not care, Primark and rest of the high street crap vendors will get away with scandalous working conditions.
hello, yes i agree about children not working i have five but i lived in third world country.
if you take away poor peoples jobs they have to beg or steal.there is no govment help if you are sick no free medicion. do you watch your family starve your sick child die ? or sew some things to stay alive.
I know Im sad, but did anybody watch this today? Well, I dn't know if anybody happens to know the song played at the very end of this program...Any help?
Welcome to the real world - Mr/s Western Consumer. Your incomes are disappearing, you are surviving on credit card debt, your state pumping you thru state benefits. cal! No money - no skills - no future. But thank God for Chinese and Indians - who slog for a pittance to keep your lifestyle . And your governments struggle - sovrn funds/ bonds keep this hollow structure alive. And your institutions pander to ur insatiable meaningless consumerish. . But without it can you last another decade?
Well, did anyone actually notice that they couldn't string the sentence 'Primark' & 'employ child labour' in that report? Oh dear, oh dear dear dear. As said in the report, Boycotting won't help but instead encouraging the company to help the factories change is the way to go. Some lies in that program made by Primark I even went a bit... well, found a bit dodgy. Nevertheless, I think they just proven a point that it's a problem in India, Primark isn't there to monitor a whole country after all.
well with this show work ethics in primark, it will make alot of people think twice about shopping there again, And if this is the case then there will be loads of things on the rails, so if i was you I would go shopping tomorrow as there's going to be all things you've wanted to get your hands on before But others beat you to it
I think what Primark are doing by allowing child slave labour is absolutely Appalling..Disgusting..Horrifying. I think we need to start thinking before purchasing these clothes and ask ourselves as to why they are so cheap.. In 3 Words Primark disgust me
everything is made on the cheap, every high steet has pound shops, where do you think that stuff is made, you have knock offs in markets,, everytime you call a business you will get through to a Indian call centre, do you think that the business are cutting cost by using cheap labour, But when has any of that crossed anybody's mind when phoned advice from their ISP help desk. You cant single one shop out everything you touch is made on the cheap in another country,
Does my head in. People are complaining about rising food prices.."Oh food is too expensive". An..yet they are complaining that clothes are too cheap???
This may be or may not be tru...But Primark dont actually employ these children....They contract work to large factories in developing countries....and then the people that run those factories...sub contract the work to 'sweat shops' that employ children....so its not really Primarks fault....Furthermore following this investgation they have pulled all contracts with the larger factory from this film.
I do think this is terrible but this is the only source of money these people get and a million other businesses do the exact same thing. Would you rather kids starving on no money per day (still without school etc) or working for primark and being fed? I mean think about it seriously.
Well, in a poorer country they have to work harder to earn there money. I no there not really getting treated the worse but there saying it like Primark are the only people that are doing it. Nearly every retailer does this, because its cheap. I no its wrong but its not going to change. Its the way the world works now.
so what do you do, do you shut down the factories and make a large number in a starving country unemployed only to take up other jobs for retailers around the world, which in this case employment means a wage, might not be a fare wage , but thats not down to primark but the owners of the distribution. primark are a small cog in the whole process.if everybody felt so passionately about the stuff they purchase then coca cola, shell, Nestlé, Nike. list goes on and on would go out of buisness
It makes me sick that these poor children are being used as slaves in order that vile low class ugly trash in the UK can feel good about themselves. That girls smile brings a tear to my eye. fcuk Primark!
I work for primark aswell not only should they show what its like for the workers abroad, but what about us over here, I agree with every other comment that people work for them have said, but at least they have shown willing and sacked the companys that were doing it.
In 1946, my father at the age of 6 worked in his fathers' business. When he was 14 he drove a truck for the GPO. and it harmed noone. It sounds outrageous to hear this in 2008. If you turned back time and tried to apply our rules and regs. of 2008 to 1946, it would make no sense to them at all. Just the same as trying to appply our rules and morals of 2008 to INDIA and CHINA, it makes no sense to them either.
Primark's protestations of shock, as with its corporate responsibility statement, is a sham. These companies locate in the 'third world' to take advantage of the miniscule labour costs and do not look too closely at what their contractors do. Retailers get away with it because most shoppers do not give a damn.
In most of the primark stores most of the managers are not properly trained they treat staff like animals .If anybody wants to know what primark is really like come and see primark's workers in one of the busy stores . The amount of work thay have to do is way too much as compared to other stores and they are forced to do overtime .If u dont do u will be permanently barred from doing any overtime .
primark is treating its employees very badly and they are never allowed to go on time even their shifts are finished .They are asked to do retuns or recovery . its really bad company to work in .
... contract the owners of the factories who then subcontract to other factories who sponsor child labour. Did you know that the likes of New Look & Gap also use the same supplier, H&M maybe? Oh, would that mean that they are ALSO sponsoring child labour, but yet their prices are so damn sky high? Oops, think again. Same people make the same styles for Primark, New Look, Gap & H&M. You all just seem to be focusing on Primark's success, but shops I've mentioned could well be implicated too.
RE: RYANinCLOTHES. It is sad to hear your attitude towards this subject 'primark receives tons of awards for their clothing and value'.... You are missing the point of this documentary. Earlier this year GAP were also exposed for employing child labour - the BBC are not focusing on Primark, they are shedding light on a side of the retail industry which people prefer to ignore.
I think you're all being blind. Notice that Primark is the most successful company of today, recieving tons of awards for their clothing and value, but you all seem so narrow-minded and are saying that they sponsor child labour. I was discussing this with my Primark manager today, and this isn't harming the company, in fact it's giving us advertising which we never pay for because we save expenses by doing none of that. It's the people who own the factories who are to blame, and Primark contract
You must be one of the managers of primark . I am suffering being a employee in one of the primark . I work in women section . My shift finishes at 5.50 but never been allowed to go till 6.20 or till the recovery is not done . Is this not forced labour . Primark is sucking its employee's blood .
When you see sequined tops for 5 or 10 pounds and you dont think they are made in these conditions by exploited people, then you are either a fool or you just dont care and you lie to yourself. It's hard to believe people are that stupid, so they must be just selfish and looking for a great bargain, because we all like to buy that thing that we kinda like but DON'T need, probably wont use more than twice and then just buy more new crap. People who dont care should just stop pretending to.
i work for primark and we were assured that after discovering this the powers at be cut any connection with these factories and middle men but i argue it is a gross lack of competence that this went on in the 1st place. thanks to the bbc this was uncovered but what other sweat shops dont we know about! we get primarks ethical trading standards rammed down our throats every time primark are exposed like this. These 'standards' look like nothing more than a smoke screen! time 2 move on i think
Well said. Unless the BBC want to offer a solution for the problems people in these coutries are subject to then don't just go brand Primark "unethical". If these kids dont work they don't just go play happily in the streets doing kids thing and learning in schools. If they are that poor their families will probably send them out to steal or commit other crimes
"Indian middle-man that Primark don't know about..." Wahtever! OR COURSE Primark know what goes on in their 'factories'. How else can they buy 100 sequined vests for less than £2.50?
Child labour is a macroeconomic issue You people in the west really don't understand the reason why the child is working?80% of child labour in developing countries is not forced it's voluntary bcoz food is more important to the child than education, hunger is more painful to them than working long hours, Nearly 2000 workers directly and 5000 workers working indirectly have lost their job bcoz of this programme when inflation is on a 13 yr high in India. God bless BBC and PRIMARK.
Dou.NOwO2 U r A PatHETIC .LUZER.i meen reeli do u have a life?u SHOP AT primark one of the cheapest shops .KNOWN.i meen simple thingz wich u can't normaili find u get frum ther.but no U get ur whole shopping frum ther~ n u dont care bowt child labour so u wudnt mynd bein poor and have to work reeli hard jus to make pound worth of clothes for primark. u r so .UGGh.horrible.!
hmmm but it never does anyone go primark does it. anyway these kids get a chance to work and earn a lil better than nufin. aint sayin wat goes on is ryt but nefin is better than having nuffin for theses kids so watever innit if u cnt do nuttin rely leave em alone us british love to babble alot and do jack all bout it
Well half of that is rubbish tbh. The parts which are incriminating Primark are what they didn't know at all. I work at Primark, I've read the Ethical Trading Initiative and I do think that the underage child employment also wasn't their fault. Primark only employs over the age of 15, or 14 if the local goverment allow it.
i agree with you, i work at primark and have too read the ETI. they are assuming as primark are such a succesful business that they have use underaged children but they dont.
Expensive or cheap, just about all clothes are made in Far East cheap labour sweatshops these days.
The title of this programme could just have easily been 'Marks & Spencer: On The Rack' or 'Harrods: On The Rack'.

in reality if they r getting the equivelent of 50p per day tht means in english money even the wealthy people r getting less than the britsh national wage.

this documentry was not 2 highlight the problems but simply 2 bring down primark. 19p in India is a lot of RUPEES!
It's not just '19p' to them, it's a whole lot more.
19p here in the UK won't get you far.
But in India it's an okay weeks wage for children who are not even skilled or educated enough to be doing the jobs they are doing.
Time to do your math. Oh, and learn about currency values.
darkheart110 3 years ago

EllaWildin 3 years ago
Also the factorys who were using children to make the clothes were shut down promptly. Maybe more children in this country should have a go at working instead of stuffing their faces while playing on game consoles.
motorcycle86 3 years ago
Those kids looked rather happy to me. It is not just primark that buys from these factorys, h&m, topshop and gap all use the same supliers. Priamrk gets it in the neck beacuse they are the cheapest. The reason they are cheapest is because they dont advertise, they only sell the most popular sizes and they pay their staff in the stores mininmum wage!
motorcycle86 3 years ago
well to be fair, it kept the children off the streets, gave them skills and some money, which without primark wouldn't be possible, may not be a agreeable wage to us uk consumers but im sure the workers knew they had no other choice, or course they deserve better but the biitfer fact at the momnt is that they aren't going to get better.
And on another note primarks clothes ar cheap for another reason they areliterally disposable after one wash, not blaming that on the craftmenship.
paulster26 3 years ago
One in six children in the world today is involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development.
· Globally, between 210 and 240 million children are child labourers.
· 126 million of these children are engaged in hazardous work
· Every year 22,000 children die in work-related accidents.
· 73 million working children are under 10.
· 5.7 million children are forced into debt bondage or other forms of slavery.

Primark is so cheap and skanky anyway, so this gives me more reason to stay away...QUALITY over QUANTITY!
tinmanop 3 years ago
Don't you think that people should start washing thier clothes intead of throwing them away after one use. I think it is so unfair that people who make the clothes, spending time, energy and paitance on hand sitching clothes for a small wage and people are just going to throw them because of tomorrows new fashion. You say you will need cheap shops though the credit crunch lets not forget that it is a world problem, who is going to make your cheap clothes when these people have died of stavation.

ITS NOT PRIMARK FAULT LIKE THEY SAID ON THE END THEY SINGLE THEM OUT BECAUSE OF THEIR SUCCESS WHICH I BELIEVE IS TRUE BECAUSE IT HAPPENS NOT ONLY WITH PRIMARK BUT WITH ALL THE FASHION LABELS OUT THERE ARE DOING THE SAME THING which is wrong but it will always happent these people need money we will never understand it because we are not in their shoes !!!
styleout31 3 years ago

I say THANK GOD FOR PRIMARK!
gluepot1968 3 years ago
'Ohhh how very terrible that Primark have had children making their clothes. IT IS NOT PRIMARKS FAULT ITS THE SUB CONTRACTORS.'
It's called corporate responsibility, so Primark is accountable and cannot lay the blame on its contractors. If you have an ethical policy, compliance is your problem. So long as consumers do not care, Primark and rest of the high street crap vendors will get away with scandalous working conditions.

You cant single one shop out everything you touch is made on the cheap in another country,

I mean think about it seriously.

so what do you do, do you shut down the factories and make a large number in a starving country unemployed only to take up other jobs for retailers around the world, which in this case employment means a wage, might not be a fare wage , but thats not down to primark but the owners of the distribution. primark are a small cog in the whole process.if everybody felt so passionately about the stuff they purchase then coca cola, shell, Nestlé, Nike. list goes on and on would go out of buisness

SO WHAT? ==================
Lisabonelady 3 years ago
Primark's protestations of shock, as with its corporate responsibility statement, is a sham. These companies locate in the 'third world' to take advantage of the miniscule labour costs and do not look too closely at what their contractors do. Retailers get away with it because most shoppers do not give a damn.
ladybracknel 3 years ago
There are many other problems about Primark.
Primark doesn't employ staff to clean up after the customers have thrown what they dont need on the floor there isn't enough staff to do that.
I hope this programme will make others think about were there clothing comes from.
The material from Primark isn't strong as well.
PeteMP1992 3 years ago
In most of the primark stores most of the managers are not properly trained they treat staff like animals .If anybody wants to know what primark is really like come and see primark's workers in one of the busy stores . The amount of work thay have to do is way too much as compared to other stores and they are forced to do overtime .If u dont do u will be permanently barred from doing any overtime .

... contract the owners of the factories who then subcontract to other factories who sponsor child labour.
RYANinCLOTHES 3 years ago
RE: RYANinCLOTHES. It is sad to hear your attitude towards this subject 'primark receives tons of awards for their clothing and value'.... You are missing the point of this documentary. Earlier this year GAP were also exposed for employing child labour - the BBC are not focusing on Primark, they are shedding light on a side of the retail industry which people prefer to ignore.
amcd1984 3 years ago
I think you're all being blind. Notice that Primark is the most successful company of today, recieving tons of awards for their clothing and value, but you all seem so narrow-minded and are saying that they sponsor child labour. I was discussing this with my Primark manager today, and this isn't harming the company, in fact it's giving us advertising which we never pay for because we save expenses by doing none of that. It's the people who own the factories who are to blame, and Primark contract
RYANinCLOTHES 3 years ago

These 'standards' look like nothing more than a smoke screen! time 2 move on i think

This is a bit simplistic. The alternative for these children is not going to school - it's starving to death or foraging for scraps on rubbish heaps.
MJMedin 3 years ago 3
Well said. Unless the BBC want to offer a solution for the problems people in these coutries are subject to then don't just go brand Primark "unethical". If these kids dont work they don't just go play happily in the streets doing kids thing and learning in schools. If they are that poor their families will probably send them out to steal or commit other crimes
