That was shot with a friend of mine's home-made gun. He obtains the (carbon-fibre) barrels, glues on a rail, and pieces the rest together himself. I'm not sure where he sources the barrels and rails. Could probably find out. Happy spearing.
@unreel07 Most of the Footage came from Steep Point, the westernmost point of Australia. The samsonfish spearing footage came from Rottnest Island though. It was during a trip which we speared most of the west coast.
We didn't get any real big ones on that trip. Heaps of small ones maybe one or two near 20kg. To be totally honest we stopped spearing them because the freezer was full pretty quick. 23kg is a cracker though. I've shot a couple near that size up in Broome and my mate nailed one over 40 a couple of years back. No big ones on film yet though.
pretty sure in WA you're allowed SCUBA but I'm a big fan of freediving as you can probably tell by my vid. Might be best to check with fisheries though.
I'd go Edge all the way. I'm not sure about the RA sparid or Pelaj saber but I know that Edge has a carbon fiber barrel so you can load it up with multiple rubbers without the barrel flexing and you shaking your head wondering why you keep missing easy shots. One thing to consider with edge tho is that tony heugh usually sells them with an enclosed muzzle which I'm not really a fan of. You can request an open RA muzzle when you ring up to buy the gun. But yeah I'd choose Edge. Happy spearing.
Yeah dude I'm always stoke meeting people passionate about spearing, especially other Christians.
That cod was a massive queensland groper(150kg+) we found hanging out under a huge ledge at steep point. Apparently they get mulloway in that same spot in the colder months. That area was awesome, you could have shot as many mackerel and baldchin as you wanted.
Won't be able to make it on saturday unfortunately but me you and col will get a dive in soon for sure.
Thanks mate. I really like them. I bought one specifically for that trip and even being relatively inexperienced with reels had no trouble using it and landing decent fish.
Yep, That was also a problem. Pretty country to dive! Although I couldn't get anyone to dive with me there so I spent a lot of solo time in the water - Baldies are not the only thing thick in the water - the tax men kept me honest!
You're a brave man getting in on your own with all those bities. Me and my mate had an ongoing argument of whether or not to berley. I wasn't a fan. Didn't wanna stir any of those big buggers up.
why didn't you shoot the amberjack?!?!?

Great vid!
where u shooting those Sambos without a reel/float?
Also, what size is ur Edge?
safe spearing!
alekscee 3 years ago
I use a 1.4 edge but I also own a 1.1. I really liked the 1.4 with the real for west coast conditions, bigger fish etc.
We either used a reel or a float or reel to nail those sambos. I'm not a big fan of losing gear!

So little room in the freezer! Next time I'll bring a bigger one. Pretty close with the location they were even thicker at Dirk Hartog.
