Umm it will be a long time before anyone matches Louganis. He was the perfect diver with absolutely stunning technique in both his basic and difficult dives. I can almost guarantee that were he still at his best he would be throwing dives like the 109 with absolute perfection
he's quite good looking, could have represented China real proud at the 2008 Olympics and make foreign girls like him. but I heard he was an idiot in real life.
He retired because because the national team didn't want him anymore. The minute he got fame, he started showing off and doing ads and commercials and interview.
China at that time was still very conservative, and that type of behavoir was not considered acceptable.
NOW, however, China's loosening up. It's a progression, and don't start bashing China because that's the way our country runs. It's changing, but it's not going to change overnight.
such things doesn't happen only in china. such things happen in europe too. But it doesn't change my point of view. For me it's the the worst bullshit when they kick out an althlete because they don't agree with his private life.
actually, the same happened to Guo Jingjing... but the difference was, Guo Jingjing chose diving over anything else because she loved it too much. Tian Liang prefered the glamour and ease of the entertainment circle. So Guo Jingjing was the one who wore the gold medal in Beijing while Tian Liang was busy acting in some obscure TV series (okay, not obscure, it actually looks pretty good...but not as good as winning in the Olympics).
I have to agree with crashartist1 .. that very reason is why I got out of such sports... and started a normal life.. unless one lives such a life style its hard to understand the stress, heart ship, and crap one goes through .. you do all the work and coaches take the glory for the most part! it SUCKS! I wont even go into what my coaches did...
he didn't make any terrible decisions. he wa tired of all the money going to the coaches who were getting rich. There is so much backstabbing and unethical behaviour and corruption in the Chinese swimming federation he did what was best for him. Look at Guo Jingjing, she is treated like a piece of meet by the local politicians and businessmen in any city in China she goes to just so her coaches get more money. Pathetic.
Pretty face yes, but great fitness also, wonder what he looks like today does he keep in shape? be nice to see what one does with his body after such fitness and olympic glory

Not even close to Greg Louganis. Greg Louganis had passion and style, some people are just born with and that can't be taught no matter what.

@fetauinaina Let's face it. The Chinese have eclipsed Louganis.
