Even though Tito, Jermaine & Randy weren't allowed to play on the Motown recordings, they WERE playing live in concert. So, when you went to a J5 concert, all the guitar playing you heard was Tito, the bass playing, Jermaine, & the congas, Randy. Amazingly, I don't remember one music critic ever acknowledging their musicianship. Check out the "Live At The Forum" cd from '70 &'72. They weren't just good for teenagers, they were damn good period.

To be exact... yes, Tito was a catalyst for the group to be formed because it was Joe finding out that Tito had been playing HIS guitar that made Joe tell him to play it and he saw how good Tito was. The group was going to originaly be based around Jermaine singing though and it wasn't until Mike sang at a elementary school talent show that Joe and Katherine realized Mike could sing better.

@grazmusic Michael did not join the group as a singer. his voice was still immature. He joined the group as a bongo player and dancer. Joe recently said that Jermaine was the better singer, but MJ was chosen for his entertainment value. ie, he was tiny and could dance like James brown. Listen to early Jermaine singing before his voice broke, and you will find that Mj learned to sing from Jermaine.

It takes extremely hard work to do what Tito did for the Jackson as a rhythm guitarist. It was just as hard for him doing what he did as it was for what jermaine and Michale did. I grew up going to their concerts and watching thm closely. Tkae nothing from this man because it's hard to do what he did.

Well Tito is great and a gifted guitar player. But what Jermaine did as child and teenager was even more impressive IMO. To sing live, play James Jamerson basslines and move along with the choreography simultaneously is hard especially since it is the bass player and drummers responsibility to lead and keep the rythm in an ensemble.

@deylite Sorry to burst your bubble.. but Tito is not playing on ANY of the studio stuff that the J-5 recorded at Motown. Those were all studio musicians.. however. he DID play those parts live. And he most certainly is NOT a jazz guitarist. He has repeatedly said that he is a blues/R&B guitarist. Don't know where you're getting your info from.
