I can't believe myself! Even after my mom explained to me that this song was about war, I still thought it was saying, "It's a dirty little whore." Wow......
What a shame that we did not learn the lessons of this musical ! I was one of those 60/70's free spirits . . . and now we are back in mindless wars . . . and no one care. I suppose the real meaning is that the Establishment always wins in the long run.
ggreenwood i was 3 when my mother and i protested down main st hartford ct made the front page of the hartford courant maybe page 2 never the less guns before butter?????????
For those who are wondering what the words mean in this song, they are a reference to a poem by Alan Ginsburg
"Wichita Vortex Sutra" speaks of the power of language and the poet's desire to end war by making a mantra. Lines from the poem include, " Vietcong losses leveling up three five zero zero flesh soft as a Kansas girl's / ripped open by metal explosion ... shrapnelled / throbbing meat / While this American nation argues war / conflicting language, language / proliferating in airwaves."
"Viet Cong losses leveling up three five zero zero per month" to General Maxwell Taylor and/or Robert MacNamara in what it calls "Front page testimony February 66".
Thanks punkzombie15, Looking back today, I was wondering if this tune was promoting the myth that there was a much high population of young black kids there. This of course wasn't true, to me it looked like a good cross section of kids my age (20ish) from across the USA. Hollywood has sure rewritten history unfairly and give virtually a Vietnam Veterans a bad rap.
@rivronjack i believe they were referring to Vietnam as niggatown again to rebel against the norm again to them niggatown wasnt an insult of any kind we have to remember they were kids finding a way to understand their world and this was just another way to do just that
I saw Hair at the Aquarius theater many many, many times! It was THE BEST CAST in the WORLD, and THE ONLY UNRECORDED CAST...What a waste of the best musical talents in the world.
when i was a child my Dad had a lrge collection of LP's among them was the musical broadway "HAIR". And, ever since my first time hearing it, as a child still not quite understanding every word, it became one of my most favorite records to listen to. Over the years i've learned the importance of the songs and their words, and I believe this musical could still make a powerful comeback.
A very important part of musical theatre. It was not only one of the First rock musicals (it opened on broadway in april '68), but also an important anti political statement. What a cool show. Too bad it is so dated now that no one has much inclination to preform it. Though since the war in Iraq started, it has been popping up a little more frequetly among college and high school theatres
The First Musical to use rock in it was "Bye Bye Birdie" and then one of the first anti political musicals was "The Cradle Will Rock" and that was way back butI LUV HAIR!!!!
srry if i sounded uptight its just i take a class in school and i have to know this stuff
Hair was the first musical to actually be about the time it was being performed. It was written in 1968 to be about 1968. Rent got alot of it's ideas from Hair
Such an angry song! "Hair" is such a genius piece of anti-political art. I saw this in the Delacorte outdoor theater in Shakespeare in the Park. It was mind-blowing.
It's brilliant. And relevant! Why can't we learn?

Don't despair, Melkite. The "Occupy" movement seems to be prodding youth to galvanize (Occupy protesters show up at Bachmann speech in Charleston).

Nigger doesnt mean color. It means somebody has their foot on your neck. Today in the USA, we are all niggers.
