David Niven-Lt Colonel British Special Forces David Niven, WW2 Veteran of Normandy. Member of 'Phantom Signals Unit' ...they crept around German lines like US Special Forces do, calling in enemy positions.
He was a real "rascal" and actually 'escaped' from British Army prior to ww2 and ended up in Hollywood. When WW2 broke out..he went back to fight for King and Country.
He always called himself the world's biggest chicken. But when WWII broke out he quit Hollywood and went back to England. He became a Colonel of the commandoes. The Special Forces of its day. He never talked about the war. Ever.
what i admire as a englishman about david niven is that when his country needed him and england was at war with germany in 1939..he came back and re-enlisted in the army and fought in the d-day landings and right on to germany...he didnt stay in hollywood where there were no bombs fallin like some other british film stars did?
....my first crush and someone I would have loved to have met - read all his books - so funny! He did so much during the WW2 as well - so a real hero not just on screen.
He was a true hero! In fact he received medals too, so he was a brave kind of man. And considering the sad childhood he has... he was a good man after all.
He won an award for the "best collaborative actor" (besides an Oscar and other awards), so he was a cutie!
Awesome tribute! I like David Niven: he was an english gentleman, from head to feet! And he was so sexy...he deserved much more fame than he had. In some films where he is costarring and he has not the prime role, if I where the girl, I know who I would have chosen!!!
he is a magnificent actor. love his signature mustache.

Nice one.
The Chap magazine view DN as a shining beacon of what a chap can truly aspire to - style, wit, urbane sophistication but without really trying.

Sweet. I loved him and his books. He's
on my list of 10 persons I'd want to have
dinner with. Please Don't Eat the Daisies
is my antidote to stress.
There is also a great book out about him that he did not write but the end is
heartbreaking...just his daughter with him
when he died.

Ditto Anna!!
How could anyone choose some little silly actor instead of David Niven?
ie. "The Moon is Blue" (1953). He was playing some sort of a gigoló (?) role there... but even in that case he was sooo cute!
r124 4 years ago
Gee.. it´s hard to belive, (but I do :)
That´s pretty amazing! Did you know him? They say he was a very good person. It´s hard to find out there stuff about him.
ie. Cary Grant is everywhere, but Mr. Niven is not an easy find!
I would love to know more about him!!
r124 4 years ago
im in ''family'' with him, or my grandmas sister was married with him, im not kidding!
JayWalkingRecords 4 years ago
yeah, he usually played brittish gentleman roles... a bit stiffy, but with the heart in the right place, those ones were really cute comedies...
