I really like the fact she uses an existing kitchen with Masonite counters - simple tools and it really shows you what it will be like when you do it at home.
Always start from the bottom whenever you are tiling. Also, if you are using a tile such as slate, which has a very rough surface, You should use the "pastry bag" method of grouting instead of the float. The grout will get stuck in the grooves and you will be in there wiping tile clean well into next week. And, please, please, please, seal everything!
So what happened to the wall outlet at 4:10? Did she just remove it?
You should only do a how to video if you know what your doing first. Talk about the blind leading the blind. She used a trowel for the grout? She should have shown how to install a 1/2" box spacer on the outlet to bring it up to grade with the tiles instead of just eliminating it. Poor how to video.
Sloane needs to stick to her tacky, flower gluing scrapbook projects. Even I know to use a rubber grout float and not a trowel to apply grout and I'm a rank amateur.
I wish people that didn't know what the hell they were doing would stop "teaching" people. Of course the float, and the sealer won't work! You have to wait 72 hours before you can seal or enhance it. Jeez.
Haven't you seen a prop kitchen. It is probably in other videos.I think mosaics came about from the first waste not want not people. Not for the shy of tedious work minded though.
I teach a class every Friday on how to tile and if one of my customers came back to me with pictures of this project I know i would have horribly failed at my job. No float, didn't seal the stone before it was grouted, didn't prep the surface at all before tiling other than cleaning it, ruined what looked like a perfectly good mosaic sheet to make her own... i mean god do you want people to be pissed at Lowes?
What's wrong with the sound? I can't hear a word she's saying... As to the anal retentive way she laid out the pattern, come on, give her a break. She's obviously a little ocd... and to anyone who has ever sewn much, it's obvious she's taking that kind of overcomplicated pattern approach. I didn't think it looked too bad in the end though, just not to my taste... but I wouldn't walk into her house and think "ew!"
Sorry, guys. I thought this looked rubbish, harder than it needed to be cause of the wrong tools etc a pro tiler would start at the bottom not the top. 2/10
it looked to me as this is a mosaic job those tiles were on a sheet before and she cut them to make her own waste of time shit pattern, she cannot tile OR grout for shit, the finished product looks shit too
WTF? You should use a grout float! then again, maybe squeeze the grout into the spaces so you don't make a mess. oh, seal first, then grout. These are amateurs! Just to show that you can't believe everything you see on Youtube!
Here is something you may want to do, do not cut those little stupid pattern in cardboard, use a grout float, at the end of your project before you add the grout, seal those stone on the surface not in the spaces, let it dry and then grout it, it will stop grout from staining the stone and seal it again after you finish for keep dirt away from the tile, this is how we do it here in Italy
Lovely project i like the dark grout. and the formation, it's all a matter of taste really, instead of negative comments just use lighter grout and lay the tiles randomly if you want to!
I would use a float not a trowel-she's going to scratch that soft slate and make the job harder grouting with a trowel. Also, the final product would look better if she used spacers or tried to align the tiles straighter. (Of course she did start applying tiles in the middle-wtf?) Helpful hint: brush grout release on porous and uneven surfaces like slate before grouting-it will be much easier to get the excess grout and haze off.
that black grout looks absolutely horrendous - nevermind the fact that it wasn't applied or removed properly.

Why is she using the trowel to grout the tiles when it should be a Float?! ;(
Hotlips4000isback 1 year ago 11
@Hotlips4000isback why do you even ask, if you can actually, she got no brain?
firstly, these tiles need to be sealed, then grouted.

@theshacall
Why did you respond when you can't phrase your reply correctly?
Grouting should be done with a float, that's what they are for!.
Common sense maybe lacking on her part, but you don't sound any better.
(Others on here obviously agree.)

just apply the tile. the repeat pattern is monotonous, and ridiculous.
oscarmacaroni 2 years ago 3
Good project, put you should probably use a "grout float" to apply your grout instead of using that trowel again.
