This album has always taken it under the chin with music critics & fans alike. I always liked it as an experimental work & the fact that the band was so distracted with other issues in '67 that they managed to produce anything by years end. The North African influence is there & cool to hear. I still have my original 3-D cover in excellent condition. While the cover may be Pepperesque. The music is unique & different from anything produced that year. A solid warmup for Beggar's Banquet!
Within You Without You? Pretty similar though. In Another Land reminds me of Fixing A Hole with the harpsichord being played in the background. But overall, this album is pretty good.
@DanielJoseDiego - I know the Stones' albums, and, I wasn't talking about you or myself, I was talking about non-Stones' lovers! The average radio-listener knows no more about the Stones than "Satisfaction," and "She's So Cold." Unlike yourself and I, this album is "FORGOTTEN" to to most!
@abkcoisdead - I REALLY LOVE this video you made for two GREAT, yet, forgotten songs! I also love how you included the three-dimensional cover of the 1967 album, "Their Satanic Majesty's Request!" And, all of the pictures of Brian Jones, whom, without, the Rolling Stones may have never been!?!? :)
I hate the way peole say this album was just copying the beatles, like the beatles invented psychedelic music. It was the beatles it was the acid and muchrooms that invented that feel and sound.
Nicky Hopkins-such an enima Steve Marriott on back ups on the Lantern Played this album so much during 1st year of college (yes I was behind the times) (NY)
Gomper: A lily white skinned, self indulgent, misadventerous male aged in their late 20's usually found drowned at the bottom of a pool. They have the unusual trait of belonging to a collective known as the "27 Club". The essential prerequisite for joining is that all members must be deceased.Examples: The Gomper was found floating face down at the bottom of the pool. Put the Gomper in the casket. The Gomper can't play guitar anymore. The Gomper's hairstyle resembled a pudding bowl.
I LOVE SATANIC MAJESTIES. This is my favorite Stones album because it's the most untypical of them. "The birds hover high; I stifle a cry". LOVE IT! "She's A Rainbow" is my favorite Stones single. "2000 Light Years..." is a gas. Psychedelic masterpiece if there ever was one.
Awesome album. Totally underrated. Beats the hell outta other so-called "psychedelic" albums from that same year by certain other over-produced bands.
@CoalCutter73 i'm guessing ur reffering to the beatles. well, while this is a great album, sgt. pepper came out first for one thing. no sgt. pepper, no this album. second, the beatles put their albums together WAY better. ever heard magical mystery tour? also better put together. i'm not trashing the stones, i mean i love their music and i love songs on this album, but u can't say it beats the beatles psychadelic albums.
Lets face it, it was George Martin who made the beatles. If it hadnt been for his production, they would still be doing shite cheap throwaway pop songs. Martin is the man who should be credited with their success, not the Beatles themselves :)
That or maybe the fact that Lennon & McCartney could write a catchy thee chord rock song in their sleep and have it climb to #1... Of course, this is before all the pretentious fags who call themselves "music fans" decided that if a song sounded good and catchy, it was "commercial".
Let's also not forget how the 'Stones loved to rip the Beatles off too (This album, the sitar on Paint It Black, or even the single they had John/Paul write for them...)
Awesome!!!! The Stones have always been there for us form the 60's, 70's 80's 80's and still now. A treasure underappreciated by the masses, but to those who "get it" they will always be the greatest rock and roll band in the world.
@rollingstonestour Think Nicky Hopkins came in to help cover for a strung out guitarist? Hopkins was great with the Stones and Jefferson Airplane until drugs took him too.
I still remember hearing this album for the first time. I could scarcely believe it was the Stones. It was such a panned and ignored album, I had to know about the big secret. I still think there are some great moments on this release--"2,000 Light Years From Home," "She's a Rainbow," and "The Citadel."
I never heard this before.. wow.. and some of the pictures, too.. free from the spell of fright, but I am learning it is okay to be afraid 3:49 oz wizard's scarecrow without hat..

May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this track.

The Beatles were scamming on so many other groups it was ridiculous... they just threw in more commercial pop vocals...
Harrison was pretty cool though!
