I hope that all of you who think this video is funny know that I knew the victim personally and if I knew where you were right now I would punch you so hard in the face you'd have to talk out of your a******
Truly tragic, but preventable. What's he doing 200 yards offshore? We saw people swimming across 12-mile-wide Buzzards Bay and 2-mile-wide Vineyard Sound (both in Massachusetts) last week. More triathletes, I guess. Brilliant----both areas known as haunts of the Great White. Kid was killed by one in Mattapoisett, MA way back in 1936, I've seen about a 15-foot Great White from my sailboat. Gotta be smart about the ocean.
What I don't get is why people expect sympathy when something like this happens. You put yourself in an environment where you are no longer at the top of the food chain and expect sympathy for your ignorance and stupidity? Jeez!
@Samborube who asked for your sympathy? and killing the shark won't change a thing it's an ocean afterall and he owns it. but the guy is dead I think praying for him is way better than mentioning ignorance and stupidity.
We are a bunch of Dumbasses to be killing Sharks,Elephants kill more then Sharks yet Elephants are trying to be saved while Sharks are being Destroyed!
I surfed the Sunset Cliffs area a lot, spots like Garbage which I used to surf a lot. Never saw or heard of a shark in San Diego surfing for over 15 years in the area.
I also surfed garbage alot.. Im from Orange County (Dana Point) Never saw a shark in my life. 46 years old surfing since I was 5.. But I did hear rumor of Killer whales swimming under the pier near Newport.. any truth to that??
I was a semi pro surfer in San Diego for over 15 years. I surfed winter as well as summer. Never saw or heard of a shark in the area. We saw dolphins, but nary a shark.
when i was at the beach of solana i saw helicopters with light on looking at the water at night when i was in my bike now i know y they kept pasing by. thanks person who uploaded this
yes but the only sharks in la jolla are the leopard shark and the horn shark, and they will only attack when provoked. my daughter swam with them and was fine. The most they could do was probably take off a finger or two. it may sound painful, but it's not much compared to what is in Hawaii (tiger sharks *shutters*)
crazy. when i lived in san diego, the only thing i ever saw possibly shark-related was a dead seal with a bite out of it. never was there something like this around the san diego area when i was there. i know there are sharks in the la jolla area for sure, though.
awful i feel sorry for the victims family, my brother lives in san diego and thats how i heard about it!. The man was 66 and a vet believe it or not! retired. crazy u care for animals all ur life then this!. the world can be a nasty place!. he was training for a trailathlon with 2 other blokes wich was stated. i did actually hear the extent of the damage but outa respect i wont tell u that.
Yeah because if you have a very bad luck a shark will eat you or just take a bite. The last time there was a fatal shark attack in San Diego was 14 years ago.
I was snorkeling in the Philippines last September where I've been told "man-eating" sharks don't enter coastal waters. My guide began feeding and attracting a multitude of big and colorful fish. In spite of the 'reassurance,' I opted to get out of the water ASAP!
The beaches are close.....why?!! There will always be great sharks in the ocean. The answer is not to kill the sharksor ban swimming from beaches. If people are afraid of sharks, stay out of the ocean. Simple solution. Those bitten by sharks cannot claim surpise that the ocean has sharks. If they are surprised, they deserved to be eaten by sharks (law of natural selection).
The days of JAWS and hunting the man-eating beast are over. Great Whites are a protected species and hunting/killing them is illegal, at least off Cali. The thing to remember is the ocean is a vast wilderness and sharks are a part of it. When we enter the ocean, there are definite risks. But being close to the "pulse" - close to life in its rawness - is the point, especially for surfers. Indeed, this is a horrible tragedy, and the threat of sharks is terrifying, but we can't sterilize the ocean.
I dont have a copy of the pic, and even if i did i wouldnt post online out of respect. All I know is my cousins friend surfs down there and he managed to sneek up and snap a pic. From what I could tell, his leg was pretty much gone and his bottom backside was ripped open.
It's a horrible thing that happened, and this is exactlly why I dont go swimming in the ocean and I'm a San Diego native. They say the chances are 1 in a million, but it does happen
It's sad that this had occurred. I surf at Turtles about a half mile north of this site. I will out again. Amazing how fast it occurred. From what I hear he was a pretty good guy--always going out of his way for people.
Solana Beach is north of San Diego, and if I'm not mistaken, there is a fairly large seal colony present near La Jolla, so common sense would dictate that there are Great White Sharks present in that immediate vicinity. Just because people don't see sharks doesn't mean that they're not there; sharks, especially Great Whites, are stealthy hunters, and they often mingle with swimmers and surfers. 99% of the time they can discern that we're not seals, but they too can make mistakes.
Great Whites conjure up such a primal fear! I've swam out in So Cal beaches in the past. I ALWAYS had the fear in the back of my head. I know scientist always talk about the minuscule chances of a shark deciding to attack, but I think scientists would be better spoken to say, they are wild animals and we can not predict them. If you enter the ocean, you enter at your own risk, these predators do exist, just be aware of the fact that they are prowling.
North County seemed pretty shocked today overall. I know the surfing community in general seems to be experiencing a sort of loss of innocence in that there was a sense that Great Whites didn't really roam around here much, and if they did, they meandered way outside past the kelp beds. The ocean is indeed a vast wilderness. Blessings to David Martin and his family.
So sorry to hear about that. Everyone says he was such a good guy. Terrible irony that he spent his life being a veterinarian, helping injured and sick animals, and he left the world in such a harsh way. Blessings to his family...
Prayers to your best friends family. This is such a tragedy for this family. We will be praying for David Martin, bmwm3guy. This happened so fast I can't imagine the families pain. God Bless all of you.
I was in Solana Beach shopping yesterday...couldn't gone to the beach, but haven't been out yet this year. My heart goes out to the victim and his loved ones!

Never swim alone...always take a slower swimmer...you don't have to out swim the shark...just your swim partner...same with Bear, Tiger hunting etc.
Tamarack Rules!!! :-) Before surfboard wax, sponge boards, short boards, surfing wet suits, and leashes...DUH!!!

about 15 yrs ago, I saw footage of a huge shark coming out of the water and taking a surfer right off his board in his jaws. It was unbelievable.
I have searched for some time to try to find that footage, and thought it would turn up on youtube, but its like it never existed.
If anyone has a copy of it, I would like to see it.
Its NOt the footage of the two great whites attacking the surfer at the same time.
