  • Just loved this! We had this on a 45 when I was a kid. Where and when was this filmed? I heard a remake in TGIFridays yesterday. I guess great songs never disappear.

  • Classic song ,with a feeling of the times... Stir it Up, kinda sounds the same..

  • Nice memories late 60s, Sydney Australia.

  • American Johnny Nash did wonders with this little reggae classic.

  • Actually Bob Marley wrote a lot of his songs for him.

  • I like how the girls dance as if they are raking leaves at the beginning. Brings tears to my eyes every time (because I hate raking leaves).

  • @DouglasJBender

    i also hate raking leaves

  • Thanks for posting. I fondly remember hearing this tune on the radio in 1968. What a great record.

  • Terrific song. Is this where Robert Palmer got the inspiration for his video of "Simply Irresistible" with its expressionless dancers in the background?

  • finally found the right version. no offence eddie lovette but this is the one i remember. im a Gen-y kiwi gurl and i can tell you now this was the best jam 4 us kidz at the family parties. the folkz were at their happiest and the mood was beautiful.

  • Priceless classic. I looked for this song for weeks. Finally broke down and tried to sing the melody to my mom who nailed the chorus in seconds... Finding this song made my day.. I am 30 years old and truly respect and appreciate the music from this era greatly.

  • @wilsonsbeaglehound Mums know better, lol.

  • @peacetrain60 always!! When i was growing up we listen to everything...

  • Freakin great song! Why can't that write 'em like that no more?!

  • @mnovo73

by the time "Hold Me Tight" came out, rocksteady was nearing the end of it's run in Jamaica - this was cut in 1968 at Federal Studios in Kingston with what sounds like Lyn Taitt & The Jets. "Hold Me Tight" went into the Top 10 in the US,

Johnny Nash was from the US, but had a Jamaican girlfriend - he spent a lot of time in Jamaica for several years from 1968 and obviously hit it really big in 1972 with "I Can See Clearly Now" (with The Wailers as his studio backing band).

  • This is the whitest black guy I've ever seen. Sorry, Al Roker.

  • @bdubbs67 right - because of course...black people have to fit in some kind of box. Being black is a culture...not a dress code, or a frat club. Get over yourself.

  • Loved Johnny, I think I wore his records out, but his songs will never die!!!

  • Ali Cambell killed this

    Usual!

  • His backup reminds me of that group on Youtube from Madagascar.

And Johnny Nash looks like those peoples too!

He needs to be just a little smaller!

  • nice one mate. good posting.

  • As a white kid in Miami in the 60s, i was blessed to hear a lot of caribean music, ska n reggae but johnny nash helped teach america what reggae ia about ,and hes an american

  • @stalkingwolf1954 Nash was probably the first American to really get reggae and West Indies music. He did it well, this being his perfect hit. I recall driving on highways--my mother at the wheel--in Western Canada, hearing this tune. So great.

  • @stalkingwolf1954 actually this is Rocksteady and not reggae. :)

  • his voice is effortless perfection....

  • It's hard to convey in words just how much I love this song and video. Through the madness that was 1968,we still had the great music and pop culture of the times to keep us sane.

  • class track,class song,class act

  • A Texan singing some nice Rocksteady, gotta love it.

  • good song

  • Great Song. I always love the synchronized dancing.

I wonder who produced the very first synchronized dancers associated with a song.

  • @GlobalAwareness2525 As with everything music/dance related, it began in Africa...

  • awesome! love it!!

  • his vocals are so clear. whatever happened to him?

  • @bollemolleke I don't know why you thought I was being sarcastic about Johnny's dancing, I love him and think the way he moves is cool. Sorry if you thought otherwise.

  • COME ON I LOVE THIS

  • I used to go out with a beautiful Caribbean guy in the early 70's, he taught me the love of music, amongst other things? and how to move. All these yrs later, I still love the music, can still dance, and still love him wherever his is. Bless you Manny X

  • I love Johnny Nash! What a voice!

  • I love love love this song..........

  • @cyberladyny 1968

  • My one claim to fame was that Johhny Nash and I made the same demo record of a song called "Hugging My Pillow" , written by Al Jacobs and Jimmy Crane, and he beat me out. But I admit he was better than me.

  • Great choreography

  • love dancers, Johnny was great!! So fun for me @ 2:15

  • The girls are killing me! RETRO RULES!!!

  • Wow..is he related to Samuel L. Jackson??

  • @cyberladyny 1968.

  • My favourite song from 1968.

  • This cat was ahead of his time...very few Americans were hip to raggea or jamaican music when he was making these sides

  • loved every minute of it...especially the west indian chicks

  • I love the muted guitar, years before Al Dimeola arrived on the scene.

  • Eso es lo que yo llamo un ESTILACHO DE COREO!!!

  • If UB40 recorded this classic it would be a huge smash, not that I think they could ever better the original, its brilliant!

  • The man had a voice and the dancers left something to be desired

  • COOL CAT

  • Wooow this is a great song, my father loves it, I remember he played it every day when I was a child, I went back to those days for a moment, thank you!

  • I was there for 40'ty years a'go

and it stil one of my favorites

    Gert ;-)

    Denmark

  • yeah, was a skinhead/bovver as well then too, we loved this stuff and all the music from the Trojan label. We weren't Nazi skins, we just loved our Doc Marts, Two-tone-tonic strides, Ben Sherman shirts, and our Ska/Reggae etc.

Migrated to Oz in me gear with me parents, and this music kept me sane and melancholy for home and the good old days.

  • Dancers, fully dressed and doing there thing hot! not like some of today's so-called diva stars and their half-naked, sl*tish behaviour.

  • @floppybollox3 I dont' understand why you put in a single asterisk for "slutish." You're not protecting anyone, you're not fooling anyone, and everyone knows the word you're using is "slutish." Slut isn't even a word that needs censoring. Hell, slutish isn't even a word.

  • @RokaFox Man, little thing like that gets you wound up!? (By the way slutish is an adverbial form of the word 'slut', so yes it does exist as does 'slutishly', appropriate for describing Rihana's dance routines for example). Hey no censoring! Although good taste would dictate that I should.

  • @floppybollox3 Actually the correct spelling would be "sluttishly". Trust me, I'm an English professor and amateur porn star.

  • @CrinkleCutBeatroot Yep! you are correct, although maybe I trust you more on your second role in life than your first! ;-)

  • @CrinkleCutBeatroot Ha! I was thinking the same thing. But as long as we're being picayune, it would actually be the adjective form "sluttish", as he's describing a noun. ;)

  • @lcozzarelli i thought hurricane season was ova

  • Damn, the dancers!...original reggae moves (for the uninitiated and the under-5s.

  • is this beofre Billie Jo Spear's version?

  • Great Dancer (L)

  • Who in the world could actually give this a thumbs down rating? Oh, well, I suppose it takes all kinds...

  • que guapo era johnny.

  • o. k Igot Bake Turner, Jim Turner the kicker ,who knows the rest.

  • Johnny Nash did this song in 1968....NOT the 70's

  • this is a great song .but i was distracted by the three hot chicks in the background I love 70's hot chicks

  • Does anybody know who the Jet football players were in the Score hair grease commerical, doing this song ?

  • @MrWillie5877 That was with Namath, Bake Turner and two others.

  • best ever tune in the 70s

    xxxxxx

  • it was a hit in '68.

  • I was there for about 40 years a'go

    It was a great hit'

    ;-)

  • Respect The Past It Can Help You Today

  • Big Tune

  • Hey, titostacos, your right, the Jet players did do a comercial, for Score hair grease,I used after see n it.

  • Thanks for the post and to Nevillecharlesultd who reminds us that Lynn Taitt .....'nuff said. Rest In Peace, Lynn.

  • I agree the Dancers looks to cute though lol It makes me like this song even more

  • wonder who told them they could dance!

  • At the time of this vid, that dancing was about as cool as you could see! Seriously, women all over the country copied that dance!

  • I love this song. The dancers in the background make me giggle, they look lost.

  • I really like this song. I bet many of you guys didn't know this was credited as being the first US Artist to implement reggae in a song. It was either that or the first USA song to implement reggae. I can't remember.

  • Was there a TV commercial with some NY Jets players singing this? Long time ago?

  • Please dont take this one down.I have it on my playlist and I love a video when it shows the artist LIVE!! So thank you for sharing it with us!

  • Johnny Nash was a tremondous artiste

but I think that most of the accolade should go to Lynn Taitt the guitarist and more than likely arranger on this record. Lynn has played on most of the rocksteady records out of Jamaica in the period 66-68 a true genius who has been famous for not being famous enough. Just listen to every detail of his playing on this record and check out his other stuff on You Tube.

  • Quanto tempo será que levou para ser criada e ensaiada a coreografia.

    Rsrs, ilário!

  • Fantastic! Johnny Nash was great!

  • @bartonim johnny nash IS great lol

  • Did he marry his Jamaican girlfriend?

  • great song. i remember johnny coming to my hometown (middlesbrough, england) around '68 to do one of his shows and he got caught smoking some grass and went to court and got a fine.

    petty bastards.

nowadays he's get a fine if he DIDN'T smoke some weed.

  • SEXYSEXYSEXY. ILOVE THIS MAN. grew UP IN hOUSTON ON THE SAME STREET.

  • SEXY. He was a favorite of mine when I was little and still is to this day. I met with him in 1996 or 97. I tried to talk him into doing one of my songs Titled Touch Of An Angel. We could tell he was giving it some deep thought, it's more of a Johnny Nash tune. But after a few minutes he handed back the tape and told me he was done with recording. I guess he really is. We haven't spoken with him in a few years now. Maybe I should give him a call. ???

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!!!

So great to see this footage- Thank you so much!

    I'm gonna cry now.

  • Really soulful regea song and so 60's. Its so nice. My comments sound so trivial but reggae started like this didn't it?

  • @joeles123 Not trivial at all, spot on!
