It is not a scientific theory other than the extrapolation of math over a period of time using numbers from the I-Ching. But, you would be well advised to know that Terence McKenna is able to articulate in VERY coherent and even poetic fashion.

When you listen to him speak you begin to understand that science is seriously lacking when trying to explain the things TM tackled.  He was probably one of the greatest thinkers in the past 100 years. Things like after death, the NATURE of time and how things appear to affect it and all sorts of metaphysical, cultural phenomena and the human experience.

my brother is a quantum physicist teacher, and he tells me that General Relativity has an equation showing how the gravitational potential determines time dilation,, the more negative the gravitational potential, the greater the dilated time. Upon reaching a critical value, the potential causes the dilated time to become infinite, meaning that from our perspective the affected clock would take forever to reach the next second. In other words, that is when its time rate slows to zero.

Although I do see the omega point and the technological singularity as self-evident truths, a specific time frame needs a mechanism, and since future predictions are the core of this "technology", I find it VERY auspicious, popish and pseudo-scientific.

@superdiza I don't know if you realize the amount of work he put into this and how he was able to articulate it with speech. He had been working on this theory since 1971 and by the time he died was able to relate it in simple, yet eloquent, terms to lay people. Something science is unable and unwilling to do.

And he did project the graph until late 2012. The graph doesn't track or predict future events. It just indicates a level of "novelty" relative to a time frame.

@tehmushroom well, I think he made a connection between the numbers which were prominent in the I-Ching (such as the number 64 which is also the number of codones in the DNA helix....along with many other #'s) and the physical laws of the Universe, conciousness and the nature of time. I think Novelty theory was meant to be supported by Timewave Zero.

@superdiza actually the date he originally arrived at was in November. About a month before the december mayan date. When he discovered the mayan date was so close he just decided to adjust it. Again, his "theory" is not scientific. The timewave was made to support his theory about novelty in the Universe and on Earth. The scientific process, as I see it, is painfully slow and clumsy. When dealing with the topics McKenna did, the scientific process becomes utterly useless and a hinderance.

Create an hypothesis, extrapolate predictions and conduct an experiment providing merit to your hypothesis.

The Y2K scare was all about computers.

Pretty much all computers and networks had been using only two digits to represent the current year, ie: 97, 98, 99

so when the date rolled over to 2000 they were worried that the computers wouldnt know how to handle that and there would be MASSIVE electronic failures.
