I was reading somewhere that on a website that is dedicated to selling automotive LED lighting that for best results the color of the bulb should match that of the lens, like a red-colored bulb for a red lens, amber-colored bulb for an amber lens, because if the color does not match like white light for example on a red lens, the lens will filter out all the light expect for the red part, if they both the light and lens are the same color then they cause it to appear much brighter.
@AdamKNAC I found that to be true as well, not only from online research and forum chat, but from 1st hand experience. All the LED's used on that car were color matched to the lens that it would be shining through. The other important component is the quality and brightness of the LED's used. The cheap Ebay LED's aren't always the best, which is evident when compared against higher quality LED's from a dedicated supplier.
@pilot92193 I installed one already and it took care of the fast blink. It never really bothered me, but i had to switch when i installed LED's all the way around.
You can hardly see the turn signals, and this video is, like most, done at night. People convincing themselves the lights are bright.
Look at valuable day time videos. They show the truth. Or do some research and educate yourself, cheap LED's are way lower in intensity than regular bulbs. Of course you can buy the expensive ones, but who would pay $60 for just 2 1157 bulbs?
@RMasters2007 You are correct...in some aspects. When this video was shot, the rear turn signals consisted of (10) 5mm amber LED's on each side, but i was still running standard filament bulbs in the stock location. With your vast knowledge of LED's, i'm sure you know a full LED system requires an electronic relay. I hadn't done that yet, so yes, the turns look dim compared to the full LED brake lights. I had no visibility issues once the brighter amber LED turn signal bulbs were installed.
License plate light is custom. It's a series of white LED's mounted through a 1/2" thick piece of plexi that mounts using the existing holes in the rear bumper cover. Pretty sure there are pics of it up on my Cardomain site.
@rce2win@UBETTERPRAiZEHiM011 Those white LEDs are nice. In case you want a cheaper method (rce2win, I love your method, too), AutoZone sells LED stick-on strips. Their white one is rather bright, and if you can find the right one, they're also trimmable.
nice mods, next thing you need to do if you haven't done so by now, get some load resistors for the turn signals, one for each side (1 left side of car and 1 right side of car) that way you won't have that super fast blink like a bulb is out
@dsummers2006 Thanks, got it handled. Actually, i'm running an electronic turn signal relay from TMI that takes care of the issue. I didn't mind the fast blink, but i had to swap the relay once i started running LED's all around.
i cant find the leds you used for the brake....can you send me a link please........and also can you send me a link to the 3 taillight bulbs you have on there.......thanks man hope you get back to me soon...............i have a 2000 Intrepid i only modded the exhaust and i put a intake im lookin for some good mods and you are the best i found.......please get back to me thanks =)
i got mine from the seller PLASMALED on Ebay. Prewired and ready to go. The other brake lights are just LED replacement bulbs from Jamstraight. There are plenty of LED bulb suppliers out there, just have to find a good quality one for your ride. Autozone actually carries the Jamstraight brand.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I have a how-to on my cardomain page, same user name.
Pretty simple mod really. Just bought some pre-wired LED's and connected them to the 3rd brake light wiring that's already there. Find my page on cardomain (under the same user name) and there's a picture how-to there.
how did u take apart the 3rd brake light to get the leds inside? I have a 99 intrepid also, I tried to take apart the light but I dont want to break it
The 3 stock bulbs are replaced with LED replacements from Jamstraight. To do all the stock rears, you'll need (4) 3157 red and (2) 194 red LED's. Really easy to do.
been looking for any kind of custom, euro tail inspired lights, can't even find one for my 01' Intrepid.. your video is the closest i've found... do you know of any sites locations or parts stores that may have them???????
No, nobody makes any aftermarket tails for the Intrepids. That's why i modified my stock ones with Niteshade and additional LED's. You could buy another set off Ebay and mod those so you would have a stock set to go back to if you so choose.
Question, where did you find led's for the high mount brake light? Also that 3 light on the outer edge of tail is that one you custom made or is it a factory bulb not used?
Not really...you might be able to find someone to do it for you but it's not exactly a common mod. Really though, if you can drill a couple small holes and crimp some wires together, you can do this to your tails. Check out my cardomain site...there's a how-to w/ pics there.
All else fails, send me your center section and i'll do it for you.
I don't mind the fast blink. I kinda like it with the LED's b/c they go from on to off so quickly w/out the filament afterglow you get in a standard bulb.
They don't blink too fast, but i have been looking for an LED relay to replace the stock one.
Thanks, i know that's what it's called and why it happens. I have been looking into LED relays...but i really don't mind it. Actually, it looks really cool b/c the LED's go from on to off so quickly. Certainly grabs your attention out on the road.
I know what u mean, same thing happens to my LEDs on my stang and everyone is like u need to get them fix... i tell them that i like 'em that way... it separates me from the bunch out there. Nice job, btw.
(RCE2WIN). I have 3 cars up there, click on the 2002 Intrepid. There's a how-to w/ pics and i even show the LED's and holders i used. Hit me up if you have any more questions.
I bought a bundle of the individual 5mm red LED's and wired and installed them across the light bar on the trunk. You'll never get a strip inside there w/out some serious modification. My way, all you have to do is drill the correct size hole.
Look me up on cardomain, there's a complete how-to on my site for the 2nd gen Intrepid.
Pics and directions. Let me know if you need any more clarification.
now i couldnt find any 5mm from plasmaled, all i could find is 8mm..i havent taken the strip off the trunk yet but would 8mm fit? and which did u get for your taillights
8mm should fit, not sure if Radio Shack carries the holders for that size. They are flanged though, so if you get the right drill bit size, you shouldn't need the holders. Make it a tight fit and the silicone will seal it all up. The cardomain site has pics of the back side of the tails. Should show you what you need to know.
Thanks. I've looked into the LED relay, but i really don't mind the quick-blink and the relay is buried WAY up under the dash. I think the faster blink draws more attention...kinda strobe-like.
Dude that is tight... i dont know how you did it but i got the same car and i wouldnt even know where to begin with that... looks sweet though! you prolly got the only car that has that... BAD ASS!!!

They're prewired 5mm red LED's i bought off Ebay from a seller named "PLASMALED". I get almost all my LED's from him for my custom mods.
The LED on the outer edge is just an LED 194 bulb. Check my cardomain site for a full how-to with pics on the 3rd brake light.
