I wonder how much it would cost to pour a meter of gravel, a meter of sandy topsoil over the island and create a barrier reef out of hollow concrete boxes to protect the shoreline.
great idea, jvv2damax...or better: all the oil companies and the automobile industry??? Already in the 15th century Leonardy da Vinci was working on self-propelling transport...in the early 20th century the company Ford has invented a car that was utterly made of hemp incl. hemp oil for the engine. Meang: alternatives were already available in the heydays of transportation, but these options were not fully developped due to conveniency, corporal greed and long-term ignorance to the environment.
Relocation should not be the first option. There's another video on here in which Tuvaluan people pointed out the indignities of being forced to be refugees. There is a good point about technological advances - there must be something to be learned from rich countries that can build artificial islands and channels under the ocean. I think it's a worthy persuit for rich countries to look at how they can help. We need to accept that environmental changes IS in part due to our actions.
Jon, that sounds indeed like a viable humanitarian solution...if it would be my international pledge, I would give these islanders a sharehold on the Antarctic continent for re-settlement - wouldn't that be fair? (:o))) - Thanks for your kind comment.
My name is Mário Annuza; I am Brazilian and I am 33 years old. Since I was a child, I love your country ! Admire your music and collect varied coins. Among them, there is one from Tuvalu ! Hugs from Brazil,
This is truly a shame, but I don't see where there is much anyone can do. The ocean will reclaim this land soon and the individuals living there need to accept this fact. The blame game will accomplish nothing. Throwing money at this situation will not stop the sea. The best case scenario would be to relocate the entire island inhabitance to a new island donated by another country in the same region or have a country open there boarders to accept them as refugees.
Hmm...alejandro59, that's just half the story, the one side of the coin you prefer to acknowledge. You can't just simply wipe out the events since the Industrial Revolution, that man has digged + pumped up all possible fossilised CO2 resources (coal, gas, oil) and puts these back into the atmosphere via combustion (Industry/households/transport). At the moment we are driving this planet into a warmer period, whereas another Ice Age is to be expected acc. to the geological record.
man does not create climate change. you have been listening to the same lie and now you believe it. it has always happen, before you and me started to keep track on the weather.
Poor Nation do need help though the richest nation is USA, China, Japan , India , France, Britain, Russia and many more can lend a help though. I am not talking about GDP per person am talking about the Country overall money.
thanx to those who makes & produce this report....at least some people might capture their eyes with these changes to this vunerable island nation....
AHAHAHAA Matthew bloody hell your on tv.. lmao your famous sole.. AHAHA bro where was I during this time?? I was in Tuvalu around these times.. AHAHAHAHA
oh ye, now its stop global warming or this island will sink...well i have news for you , the globe changes, temperatures go up, they go down, islands submerge, and they emerge...taxing life isnt gonna fix it cuz it doesnt need fixing...this is just another scare tactic used to control us all and make us slaves...hate me if you want, i could care less what a bunch of democrats say to me...theyr evil idiots that pretend to be smart and caring
I am so amazed that we are blaming this on Global Warming!!! They are blaming us and demanding money for their tides. I live in Hawaii, if the tides were true there then they would be true in Hawaii, but you don't here anyone complaining about tides in Hawaii. The sea takes and moves what it wants over years. Dont blame us.
I am very touched by this, especiall coming from another pacific island nation. I do hope that our govt, Fiji assist and get those 11,000 people in one of their 300+ islands. The South Pacific Festival in Fiji was very quiet after Miss Tuvalu pleaded for help and aid from their South Pacific Neighbours. Fiji ones accept all those Banabans from Kiribati, why cant they do it again??? 4 d love of God lets save our neighbour.
Fiji and Australia did offer the residency for the Tavalu people to relocated anytime they want. But it's the people from Tuvalu who are not willing to leave (yet).
Too bad climate change is natural and inevitable. It has very little to do with how you live your life as a human. No disrespect to the folks of Tuvalu but I would find any way possible to live on higher ground (i.e. not Tuvalu)
soooo sad aye? well let us wait n see whats goin to happen in a few years to come coz what we see now in tuvalu is the starting of what we call Extinction..the land is eating up by the sea so that means land is becoming smaller dompared to the past years...plse help us tuvalu people..we need help the sooner the better
Give me a Backhoe or exlavator and Ill fix the island in no time.
Well put Elenituvala thanks for reminding these people. It is sinking. It is not our fault but some spindoctors say the sea is rising to make westeners feel guilty enough to pay higher taxes.
Anyway the UNESCO has a plan to steal the islands and remove the people just do some reseach if you don't believe me.
The media tells you that mankind did this because they have something to sell, an agenda. So sorry to break it to you. Yes it is sad but blaming humanity is counter productive. The folks should move to higher ground and make good life for their children, grandchildren etc.
So are you saying that mandkind's greed hasn't caused any of the destruction on this planet? I don't see how we can't help but blame ourselves for the extinction of many species, pollution of the air, land and water and desecration of the natural rhythm of life.
@xcandix blame for extinction? i suppose humans caused the thousands of species of animals to become extinct before humans even existed...i suppose were to blame for all the climate changes in the history of the earth....you bozxo
Never did I state that humans were the only cause of extinction and changes to the earth, but it's blind so say that we aren't playing a part. We are not consuming at a sustainable level, and many of our practices are not renewable.
I'm not certain about the global warming theory, but I do understand cause and effect..
@xcandix theyr using the global warming scare in conjunction with many other scare tactics all designed to rule over us and take away the little freedom we have left
this is sad cause Tuvalu stated to sink in 2002!!!!....not in 06 or 07!!!!....nobody didnt realize it till few years ago...the reason y i am saying this its bcause i do care n my father's family is from Tuvalu...
WHY DO WE ALWAYS WAIT TILL THE CLAST MINUTE TO GET OUR ACT TOGETHER???
the world has so much money...they could build Tuvalu back...but you see....for us ordinary human beengs...nobody gives a crap :( ther are many many who wanna help....but we cannot do nothing whidout money.... :|
Thank you very much for your comment!!!! Should I have encouraged some positive action from the other side of the world by posting this? I was very touched when I saw this on the BBC news as I am studying Earth Sciences/Climate Change with the Open University here in Britain. Let me know how you are getting on, will you? 'cause, you are right, the people living on Tuvalu are incredible! It must be terrifying, to be honest...
Thank you for this post...Man, it's sobering and challenging...I'm going to google Greenpeace to see what I can do from New Zealand....I just saw the Tuvalu village and the strength of the people is phenomenal...
