Made me cry! I grew up in Struthers playing in Yellow Creek Park and meeting my grandfather as he walked home from Youngstown Sheet & Tube. My father worked there as well until it closed down and then we were incredibly poor for awhile. My dad still works in a steel mill today.
Thanks friend for that touching comment. All of us from NE Ohio have suffered with the erosion of the steel industry. But none worse than the families directly effected. Peace -8th
@eighthavenue were also affected here in east chicago indiana bethlehem,us steel and inland teel are all slowly failing... sad to see a great giant wounded on its knees glad ive had the privilege to work in such a wonderful amazing place
I saw the author who inspired this song on DemocracyNow today so I searched YouTube for a video of the song. Thought Bruce would have a poignant video, but yours is so well done illustrating the essence of the song. Thanks for explaining "Sweet Jenny." We need more jobs in America! This is our 2nd Great Depression and Prez Obama and the Dems in Congress don't have the courage to do what FDR did.... Fight for the Poor and the Middle Class!
Thanks so much! And I couldntn agree more. The working class in this country continues to shoulder the burdens of our society. Greed, dirty politicians, congress, and unfair trade laws have destroyed our ability to manufacture and compete. Thus destroying the lives of hard working men and women across this country. And yes, we need a man like FDR to make the difficult decisions and get us back on track. We dont want hand outs we want jobs!
This song reminds me of a copper mine that shut down here in my town! Damn those big corporate sons a Bitches!! They are destroying our country. Heres a link of our future! /watch?v=HfvEK668Mz8&feature=related
@eighthavenue u welcome today i was talkin with my sister and she told me what do u see in the boss? and i told her he got the energy that no man got on... =)
I have to be honest, when I clicked on this I wasn't expecting much, but I was very surprised. Very well done, I am impressed. I was born in Youngstown and lived there for 24 years. My grandfather worked the furnaces for decades, and my father even worked there for a while, as well. I've had to move to go to school (no med schools in Youngstown), but even being gone, and even considering all the bad that Youngstown has, it'll always be my home. Thanks for reminding me (no sarcasm intended).
Well thank you. Glad you found my version intertaining. Youngstown was such a great place. Sad to see it silenced by greed and mis-management. But as you said it will always be home to many. Best of luck to you in med school. Thanks again. -Mike
Great song and a sad story that it tells. What the Capitalist have been able to do with the help of there politicians to hood wink all of us workers into believing them, the sad part is its still going on. Workers of the World Unite its almost to late .
Sept. 19, 1977 Black Monday. Youngstown's Katrina. Where's the bail out for all the lost children of Youngstown or those who have remained? Just like the steel our fathers made, we were born hotter than hell and over time have become cold rolled steel.
A toast to all my fellow rust belt refugees; May industry and livable wages return to Youngstown so we can finally come home. I've been gone for thirty years, I grew up in DC but never fell right calling it home.
Really sad. People have know idea how bad it's gotten in NE Ohio. I have been around long enough to see the tail end of the glory days and now the demise of a once great and proud city.
I can remember as a kid going across the Center st bridge and looking down and seeing all the sparks and huge caldrons of steel being poured and the Mahoning river.
Thanks so much! Youngstown is just to the East of me. It's a shame to see all these once great factories silenced here in the rust belt. Greedy bosses, crooked unions, dirty politicians, mis-used resources, no concern for the workers or the environment. Just a sad sad situation. When I think of all the families hurt by the auto and steel industry it just makes me sick. We as a country better learn from this!
