  • Do you happen to know of any instructors or schools that teach this type of weapon near Boston, MA?

  • @hacker4061 Sorry, I don't. Maybe do a google search using the term "kobudo", since this is a weapon within that art.

  • @hempev Alos, are there any other kama katas other than this one?

  • @hacker4061 This is the only one *I* know, but there may be others.

  • wwhhaat!?! my name is Kama!!!!!

  • @KaTeaPopstars That must explain "kama sutra".

  • I love all of these videos as a practicer of martial arts myself! However, I am very bad with weapons xD or haven't found a good one for myself yet. Even still, weapons are a side attraction and are only really applicable in a good scenario, barring cane and staff, canes being allowed most of everywhere and staffs so common in everyday life--a stick or pole. I am content with being able to defend just with my hands and feet =]

  • these videos are super old!! haha old memories coming home and practicing kata with these on my vhs player.

  • where may i find a pair of kamas at a low price?

  • @JK666JK666JK Hardware stores in Japan, but some in the states have these, too. Just look in big "old fashioned" hardware places, not box stores. Look for "Japanese sickles".

  • @hempev ok thx i found some on amazon just a minet ago but still thx ^_^

  • @JK666JK666JK amazon

  • in the third page you have a pair unsharpened kama for $2,299.00! what the fuck is so great about these kamas!??!?!?

  • @2blahornot2blah I have no idea why I would reply to a foul-mouthed ingrate, do you?

  • @hempev

I'd like to know what he's talking about. If you please sir.

  • @vdub2002 I had a wishlist from Amazon, but since I am in California, it has been inactivated. There were items on it I "wished for" or thought useful. I don't even remember what I put on there - you can get kama at hardware stores that have other kinds of sickles - $20-30 should be enough for a pair of them.

  • @hempev Yesterday I dropped by an asian market and was surprised to find kama. If I remember right they were around $6 each. So that's another place to look.

  • Is it possible to purchase a copy of this video please?

  • @burettou Go to CenturyMartialArts(.)com and search for Nishiuchi.

  • outstanding instruction "master", I've used the kama for years and have notice a signifcant trend away from the traditional toward the flashy. most kama's used in dojos today are not even sharp and are made for demo purposes only. I had to order a real pair online from okinawa

  • nasty looking weapon would want to get attacked by some one with those

  • No I am not a ninja nerd. I really hate it when people are. I love Japan and its history and I cant stand it when people say they are "ninja". If someone was ninja they would have taken some type or matial art at some point and even then you cant really call yourself NINJA.

  • What is the art of using the kama called? There is never any place that teaches this kind of stuff around me. If I could I would learn how to use the Naginata, Kama, Sai and Shurican. But the opertunity has never come up :(

  • @Kiwi2038 The kama is one of the weapons we learn in kobudo. Naginata is a weapon taught in high school in Japan, so I have no idea where you would learn it anywhere else.

  • @Kiwi2038 kamando lol

  • @Kiwi2038 Kama and Sai are taught in Kobudo...you sound like a ninja nerd wanting to be a ninja...shirukens and naginatas are ninjustsu or something like that

  • @BMunich16 There is no mention of ninjutsu; suriken are Chinese and were around centuries before the ninja, suruchin are Okinawan (can't tell which he meant), and naginata are traditional Japanese weapons. Nothing wielded by samurai or Okinawan peasant is designated as "ninja", only what people see in anime and movies, which are purely for entertainment. Those who take what they see media as historical reality are easily duped.

  • @hempev all I know is kobudo and shirukens and naginatas are not a part of it, I have no knowledge beyond that, I figured naginatas and shirukens were ninja weapons...lots of people obsessing over stupid japanese cartoons

  • @BMunich16 Yes, cartoon (and movie) influence on martial arts distort historical truth, but ninjutsu is a specific art - just not like the same as popular belief. Caltrops and blinding powders were common, but the one bladed weapon associated with ninja was a sword without the curve of a katana, since a straight thrust using the tip was more stealthy than a full swing.

  • Quick question, do you think these techniques could be applied to let's say a pair of axes?

  • @langying Probably not "as is" - the cutting surface is at a different angle, and you would have to modify the kata so much that you would have a different form entirely. It could be done, but it would take work.

  • @langying yes and no because you can blcok with axes and strike (obviously) like he does in the video (it may not turn out the same way but you still can) for thigns like the part wheres hes really low to the ground i believ is where he trips someone so unless you got an axe with a really protruding blade than i dont believ you can do that so in essense yes yes you can use this with axes

  • @thehitcher67 The lowest move is slicing through the Achilles tendon, which means the cutting edge is to the inside. Same holds true of the "medium low" move where he is cutting through the back of the knee - both maneuvers are much more "incapacitating" (rather permanently) than a simple trip.

  • cool

  • sweet thanks

    the kama finally makes sense

if only i could learn how to use the scythe

(in no way am i implying that i am now an expert; i am simply saying that the weapon that finally makes sense)

  • @jinnd319 Yeah, seeing it used correctly makes more sense in the logical part of your brain than something from a movie or anime!

  • Kama, Nunchaku,Bo,Sword are my favorite martial arts weapons

  • i like the way he uses the kama as an off hand

  • I'm not going to read all the comments to see if I'm repeating what someone said, but I will (maybe also) say this is a man to learn from. Purely traditional. Love it.

  • woaaah... is this guy like, a master at all the weapons?

  • i'm sorry but my dad is not at the house right now, he is teaching, but when he gets back ill will show him your comment.

  • It is reasonable that someone older than 20 could have taken the 5 or more years it takes Shihan's students to reach "beginning black belt" (as she calls it), but it is inappropriate for the child of a dohai to make the same claim. If it is the latter, I can only hope he instills some of the key points of the dojo kun into *your* moral values.

  • I am glad Shihan Nishiuchi put the true and correct way of learning weapons on video. I see too many people slinging around weapons at tournaments and they have not a clue as to what they are doing and why. I am Shodan under Shihan Nishiuchi and Shihan Bolz

  • I spoke with Shihan Bolz, and people who make up their own history she calls blowhards - specifically, she asked "Who is this little blowhard?" Because of the reputation of her training, people often claim to have learned from her or Shihan Nishiuchi because it inflates their egos.

  • @jgriz007 i agree...to much is put on having a good and flashy show now a days and not enough if being focused on real mastery of the given forms. i do not allow ANY of my students to compete with anything but traditional weapons, period. as i tell them daily...impress with YOUR best and let your skills and training do the rest. at the end of the day...fancy l.e.d. lighted weapons don't win matches. SKILL DOES...

  • Aq malı arkadan kafana yedinmi odunu gorursun ananın amını...

  • i have kamas, what should i think about when i am fighting sai ??

  • I am sorry but it is Kama even if it is plural it is kama , if it is 2 kama then it is Ni Cho Gama or Kama , 3 would be san cho gama

  • okey thank you for your advice :D

  • Thankyou at last some one has got it right and shows what kama can do and how they should be used instead of all these stupid fancy dance stuff

  • Kama's are devestating weapons- following the same principal of the Ghurka Kukri knife, the heavier end of the Kama generates momentum allowing it to pierce very sturdy material (leather armor for example)- being very sharp, simple short strikes generate deep lacerations. With that said, most fights are over in under 10 seconds, but what the constant Kobudo and Kata and Bunkai teach us is mind/body coordination. It also teaches us to improvise if need be in order to defend ourselves.

    Regards-

  • it a good weapon but a katana is better

  • Few people will walk in public with a katana in real life, but these are used by farmers, not just in Japan, and are not obviously weapons to the general public. Shihan teaches iaido and even he doesn't carry any form of sword outside of class.

  • These videos are great, thanks Hempev!!

  • I am trained in Kubaton and i carry one around. My mom wont let me sign up for this class tho

    Austin

    Goshin Karate and Judo Academy

    Orange Belt

  • knowing how to use a weapon is good for competitions and if you ever get in a fight where you have access to a weapon, but i have been studying kung-fu, jeet kune do, and many other japanese martial arts along with chinese martial arts for 16 years and in all my experience i find that most REAL fights are over in about 7 seconds. i am not trying to discredit this guy's beliefs but i have to say that knowing how to fight with nothing but your body is much more valuable than fighting with weapons

  • Considering you are 21 and state you have "studied" martial arts for 16 years, you obviously have not had the discipline it takes to actually *learn* any one art long enough to have a defensible opinion.

  • turth be told but i was just thinking Wow this guy can really mess some one up whit those bad boy(Girls) But what about some one that has a Bat or a gun or if they are just trying to kill you all together its good to know something like this,or how about some one whos useing Kama as well there is no way your leaving that battle whit out a Really good Wound. Martial Arts can only get you so far whit or whitout a Wepon So i think its a Plus to know this (not taking bad to anyone of Martial Arts)

  • If you worry about such things, get a concealed weapon license and buy a gun, because you will never be a budoka with such an attitude.

  • P.S. - Look at the above comment - a 21 yr old know-it-all. Sound familiar?

  • Iloved everything , i am Aikido student . Why did you chant names of kama ?

  • @Entaary It's most likely the name of the kata (form) that he is doing in the vid...

  • Just as an exercise, it might be interesting to do this kata with a couple of contemporary western weapons, like the Cold Steel Norse hawk. I've got one, and it's a fine little weapon/tool. I certainly wouldn't want anyone chasing me with one, much less two.

  • what type and brand of kama do you suggest?

and what exercises do you suggest for ambendexterity?

  • If you can peruse a Japanese hardware store and find a pair of kama that matches, that is all you need - these are farmers' implements used as weapons. Short of finding a Japanese store anywhere outside of Japan, you can find them at ShureidoUSA or CenturyMartialArts.

As for ambidexterity, I've been told to practice 3 times as much with the non-dominant hand!

  • so about ow long till someone masters a weapon? im on my ninth year of bo staff seventh year of katana and eighth month of nunchuks right now im starting to get good or no?

  • If you don't call nunchaku by their correct name, you will never get anywhere - it is only respectful. I have very little experience with weapons, since I am just the editor and poster of these clips, but the title Shihan means master, and tends to be bestowed on those who have honor, respect, and knowledge beyond others - I have seen experienced sensei who are decades from that level of ability.

  • i call them chux for shorti mean no disrespect whatsoever i will call them by their proper name occasionally but sometimes i just feel like calling them chux.

  • It doesn't matter how long you study - if you don't intend to think like a budoka, you will never become one. I'd consider it sad if learning a martial art without also the needed mental discipline was *my* intention...

  • thank you sensei ,

    i will get kama's soon .

wich should i learn in full :

    3 section staff

    sai

    nunchakau

or kama when i buy them ?

thank you for all your videos

  • These are of my sensei - I am a student.

We start with bo before going on to nunchaku, then sai. Don't get a kama until you have learned the more basic (less sharp-edged) weapons.

  • can i purchase his vids? if so where?

  • To actnmjr (comment below): you have blocked any comments from me, so you must not want me to answer.

  • I would suggest you learn any and all of them or at least a few different kata per weapon. I practise 2 nunchuku, 3 sai, 1 tonfa, 1 kama and 4 bo- that being said, there are still weapons I have yet to touch and more kata to learn. Why learn them? Because soon, they begin to mesh and merge and you will see the constant flow between the kata develop and that flow is what will energizes us.

    Stay Bushido-

  • FO-SHIZZLE yo vids r kwuel, eye cant wait til

    yo put mo on

  • Thank you for all the Kama videos. I study Shaolin Kempo (I'm currently Blue Belt) and I just started using Kama as my main weapon for my Demo Team, so these are very helpful with Kata ideas.

  • kamas definetely make you watch yourself closely hehe

  • Normally I am not a fan of Karate styles, but this Master shows some great controlled, but flowing movements. Looks very practical to me and since I also love Kama and actually use something similar in my garden, I am impressed enough to purchase his video. 5+ stars!

  • Thanks - I doubt my own coordination, so I use practice kama, which have a flat piece of metal instead of a sharp blade, but if you are use to a sharp implement, you're more experience than most!

  • lol, good point. Even without the curved blade we have to be especially careful with "umbrella" type moves circling around the head. I know I have whacked my own with rattan and even a machete be4, luckily it was not with the sharp part! Careful everyone and good training!

  • hey hempev what is this sensi called ive been wachin his vids theyre all pretty good but i cant find his name?

  • Nishiuchi Mikio Saiko-Shihan would be his full name, but most Westerners would know him as Shihan Nishiuchi. Search the Century Fitness site for his videos.

  • thx u doo good vids and u answer forms i like u hhe he

  • i love how you call americans westerners. funny to me. great job anyways, it looks deadly!

  • The instructor is Shihan Nishiuchi, and he is referring to all who use Western philosophies, not just those in the U.S.

  • okay i dont know much about it, im new so correct me if im wrong like you have. thank you =)

  • thanks for video i am looking for defence not show man ship great thanks again for the video i am going to practice using some of the forms

  • cool Kusarigama

  • These are kama (gama), sickles used by common farmers - you're talking about a *weapon* that has a chained weight (like half a suruchin) attached at the handle, not meant for farming.

  • oh thats neat(:

  • Wow. Not XMA fluff. This is great to see!

  • Thank you a lot for the upload, very nice kata and none of the useless flash that people so desire to put into the martial arts today

  • cant you spin them?

  • What's the purpose spinning a kama? If a move is not offensive or defensive, it's not done, and anything that involves letting go of your grip is avoided.

  • I agree. The only real purpose of spinning a Kama is to impress judges at a tournament.

  • very good techniques...

  • Yes, but when you are as uncoordinated as me, you get cheap unsharpened practice kama to save injury to self and tatami!

  • Nice! It is good to see masters perform.

While others might jsut strike with their kamas, this guy actually makes a slicing movement after connecting with their potential target.

  • Yes - "ashi-kubi giri" specifically aims for the achilles tendon and involves a slight upward move as you pull towards yourself...not life-threatening, just crippling!

  • You're welcome - his form comes directly from Okinawa, no Western influences (TV, movies, etc) to add useless flash.

  • he came to US by way of Hawaii from Okinawa. His instructor is Kaicho Kinjo head of Zen Kobudo Renmei in Okinawa. I am one of Shihan Nishiuchi's students

  • I asked and Shihan has never lived in Hawaii, and has only been there long enough for a seminar or conference in the past. You must be learning this from someplace other than in class - please do not spread misinformation.

  • Tight. A Kamas demonstration that isn't all flashy spins. Good technique. Thanks for the upload!
