there is music like this, just not on the radio. do some searching. and yes, not every artist is exactly the same so you can never compare one artist to be one solitary genre of music. So of course this carly simon isnt aired in popularity anymore, but theres more almost exactly like it im sure.

My girls - I have 4 - 13, 17, 21, 24 are unanimous - she's incredible.

Now I know my kids are smart; obviously, so why don't I recognise the negativity below.

As great as Carly is, there are definitely many great singer/songwriters today. They just don't get played on the radio like they did in her day. You have to care enough to go out and search for them. But they are there. Don't just live in the past and say stuff like "nobody writes like this anymore." That is such a lame, living in the past statement. I'm sure Carly has great favorites putting out quality material today. Don't just live in the past. Appreciate it, but stay current too.

What a performance. 3 of her absolute best songs and she sounds amazing. Not sure if I've ever heard her sound better despite the limitations of the recording. She's very animated here making her all the more attractive which just puts this over the top. One hell of a group of musicians as well.

Now that's the way to perform a classic song live -- don't mess around with it, don't change it, don't innovate, don't try TOO hard. Just sing it like you did when it became a monster hit. Drives me nuts when performers get up to perform their ouvre and end up transmogrifying their standards -- usually to their detriment. If they can't hit the high notes anymore, prob. better not to sing it. Otherwise, leave it alone and perform it!

The point to spending the time,effort, money and emotion to be at a live musical performance is to hear an ORIGINAL rendition of the songs, NOT to listen to a recording. It's better to just stay home and put on an album if you want to listen to the exact copy of the songs. Then that way, you can go ahead and knock yourself out by lip-syncing along!

No, I'd assert it's better to listen to whatever version of a song one prefers -- which for me, usually is NOT the live version. (There are exceptions, of course - just about anything live I ever heard from Harry Chapin was superior to his studio stuff. The live covers on Bob Seager's "Live Bullit" are also better.) But since this stuff is ALL subjective, I always feel a little silly arguing about "what sounds better". Here, I am glad Ms Simon stuck close to the excellent original presentation.

sjplwc, Of course there are 2 schools of thought on this. Being a prof musician myself, I feel if it's their song, then they can perform it any way they want after it becomes a hit. Just because you are USED to hearing the record, just stay home and listen to the record. I'll go to the concert. Had Robert Plant done what you suggest, after Led Zep's 5th album they wouldn't have been able to perform ANY of their old songs live.

Yikes, the Led Zep example is particularly bad for me. If they ever did a serviceable live performance of Stairway, I haven't heard it. The one or two I've seen broadcast are virtually unlistenable (at least vocally). That song remains a favorite rock classic - but when I heard Zep execute it live, well, I guess "execute" is the proper word for more reasons than one. Clearly, a band has the "right" to do anything it wants with its music. I suppose that includes butchering it. Just my opinion.

My point was that Plant lost his falsetto, and that falsetto was as much a part of the Zep sound as anything else in the band.

What you like is what you like. I have no problem if a person likes something I don't prefer or visa versa.

The "losing of the falsetto" is a common and sometimes troubling occurrence. It seems to happen to an awful lot of rock singers. Can it be avoided, or is it the inevitable toll of passing years? Elton John might be the prime example for me -- his 1970's, early 80's pipes were like laser-beams. A truly remarkable vocalist. Those who only know him from late 80's onward can't imagine how his voice has deteriorated. I'm wondering if disciplined artists can dodge this with vocal exercises,etc?
