  • Yeah that is a Barred Owl, nice bird! You can tell by the "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?"

Great Horned would sound like "Who's awake, me tooo!" Nice video though!

  • It's a Barred Owl. The call you heard is sometimes referred to as the "who cooks for you?" call. It could be a call from the male asking for a status report from his mate in the nest. There are other, Barred Owl calls as well, and they vary greatly from each other.

The only call of the Great Horned Owl I've seen discussed is something like, "Hoo. Hoo hoo hoo", pronounced in a monotone. That's how I hear it from my house, as well.

    Thanks for the clip.

  • really? Hmm... I'll have to look into that. On an owl page of collected hoots it sounded just like the Great Horned. But that means I'll just have to locate it and visually identify it. Thanks!

  • I hope that I'm not a bad example, playing hookie and taking walks in the woods....lol.

But I am stopping and watching the birds now because of you, cause I don't know what they are...lol.

Those woods look beautiful though, much taller and fuller than the ones I go to. One day I will get out there to see the ancient forests of the west coast.

    Spring is teasing us, yes?
