I think it's some combination of quick reflexes, knowledge of how the game maps music to the various different blocks, and practice on that individual song.

I mostly rely on the first two because I don't like replaying the same song over and over just for a momentary spot on the high score list.

It's like an old school arcade game where the point is simply to get as many points as possible.

Placing 3 or more blocks of the same color creates a match; colors have different point values, and larger matches are worth exponentially more.

There's an online scoreboard.

If you aren't interested in the game play at all then at least it's a pretty fucking awesome 3d visualizer for whatever music you normally listen to.

Yes, it automatically generates the level based on any given audio track (mp3 and a bunch of other formats work).
