  • Wonderful !!!

  • Don't you just hate pan&scan

  • The music of Irving Berlin, the sophistication of Fred Astaire, the beauty and grace of Ginger Rogers and a dance scene that is fluid in it's motion. Hollywood in the 30's and 40's will never be equaled for it's quality of motion pictures and stars.

  • Angels....they are angels....

  • he reminds me the movie green mile excellent song

  • We just saw the show backwards in high heels which was based on the life and career of Ginger Rodgers. It was just wonderful! I am a professional ballroom instructor ( also teach swing, latin and hustle) Fred Astaire is the Man! Such elegance. As per DWTS the show has helped create business for me but I disagree with how they choose a winner. There should be 2 divisions Fan favorite (audience vote) and Technically the best dancer to be voted by all the professionals!

  • I ain't nevah seen me no flicka show. Why theys angels! Angels up in Heaven, sho nuff!

John Cawffey. Electricity shall now be passed through yo body until you ah dayud. In accawdance with state law. May Gawd have muhcy awn yo sowl. Rowl on two!

  • my heart beats faster, looking at this....

  • 5 minutes into the song and I realize its in black and white haha. This is so adorable :)

  • The epitome of romance and class; an amazing song and one of the best choreographed and danced sequences ever committed to film. And when I was sixteen and had nothing else, made me happy. Still does, of course.

  • pause at 1:38

    lol

  • The real McCoy! TY.

  • Bet I'm the only 17 year old who really loves these films.

  • Fred Astaire is Fred Astaire. It's a new category of dancing. How else can anyone describe the utter and completey breathtaking elegance of this man? He sets the bar for dancing, no doubt. Anything other than Fred is just a frail copy.

    MsG

  • OK I just realized that I was born a bit too late. What would I give to live in this era of orchestra music, great dancing and true romance. And let's not forget great garbs...

  • Lovely and graceful. I wish they still made movies like this. Thank you for posting it.

  • Soo classy. This is the American Musical at its best, especially with these two beauties

  • beautiful and romantic.....just like our lost hopes and dreams.....

  • damn i got to analyze this song for music class....fuck

repeated it so many times i fell in love with it <3

  • Dear Jim, In relation to what you say i can only say: We are lucky to have tango in argentina... It has all the wonders you describe but i would say in a more deveoloped way than this dance. Perhaps you should try it. :)

  • @martineymartin

Yes, the Tango is a fine dance: very expressive, and I like the music as well. I wonder if Fred and Ginger danced the tango in their films?

  • @JimBeattie Not Argentine tango. Thats what i mean with tango. Instead of asking if fred and ginger would be able to dance it, why don´t you try it!

  • @martineymartin

I have tried the tango, but I can't dance it well. Perhaps I need a lady from Argentina to teach me?

  • @JimBeattie They danced a lovely tango scene in 'The story of Vernon and Irene Castle.'

  • @JimBeattie They danced a lovely tango scene in 'The story of Vernon and Irene Castle.' Not argentine tango i grant you but it's still lovely. I'm not sure if it's posted on youtube?

  • Beautiful. What a dancing couple, and sooo classy :)

  • I wonder how old actuary is.

As a gen Y I've heard this floating around when my parents play music, but it wasn't until Green Mile that I bothered to youtube it.

Of course, I must be a moron that doesn't appreciate the true beauty of it all despite having 14 years of classical performance experience.

  • o.O..that is some dress...sooooo much fringe! This dance is delightful, I would love to learn ballroom dancing.

  • @elfgurl06 I find it amazing how stupid Hollywood is. Because Dancing with the Stars, ballroom dance lessons have skyrocketed. Plus they are scraping for stars to dance on the show but even though there is little star power, the ratings are high. You would think that Hollywood would make musicals like this again. Julianna Hough from DWTS reminds me a little of Debbie Reynolds. She could pull it off. She dances and sings too.

  • @novusmundi

I agree. Hollywood and most media companies are run by bean counters with little imagination and little regard for the public's intelligence. The field is wide open for new companies to take over with real talent that will draw young and old alike.

  • @JimBeattie man fred astaire was so...smoooth...lov e THAT GUY...

  • love it.... ♥

  • Oh that dress.... I find it hard to dance in less than that. She looks beautiful. I read once that everything Fred did, she did backwards, and in heels. Extraordinary.

  • Well, looks like jealousy of Fred and Ginger reared its ugly head 26 times. Obviously no other reason for disliking.

  • Dear Ginger, hope you and Fred are having a swell time in heaven dancing for the angels! Hope to see you soon! (Well, not TOO soon LOL!) Just a fan of yours.

  • @cootercat486 good times...and im only 25...wish they were around...i wonder what they would say with the music of today.

  • @mastermindxyz1 Fred was a fan of Michael Jackson but that is the only singer after his time that I know of that he publicly complimented that lasted til after 2000. Not sure if he would put his head in an oven with what is out there these days though. lol

  • @mastermindxyz1 Wow! to be 25 again! (and know what I know now!)....I'm pushing 60, will be 60 this coming Oct...and can you believe they were my DAD's favorites along with Gene Kelly. I'm an old Beatle freak, lol! Anyway, there's no telling what they'd think about the music today (might just like it!) But one thing for sure, they'd figure out a way to dance to it!

  • This clip was in the green mile right? Nevermind I answered my own question. Sorry 8-/

  • This clip was in the green mile right?

  • I wish I could dance like Ms. Rogers. To dance with Fred.........(sigh)

Their movies are some of my favorites to watch. Bless both of them:)

  • ginger rogers lleva una joya de vestido..

  • So what if people saw this on the Green Mile? The point is we are watching it now which shows that it did have an impact on us which is much better than no impact at all, and this is a beautiful number.

  • Undoubtedly Fred & Ginger's Greatest Number Together.

  • I saw this on The Green Mile, and loved. So I watched the movie and I liked so much. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were fascinating. *-*

  • I always used to look forward to the time of year when my drama teacher would show this. My first - and favorite - Astaire/Rogers flick :D

  • Times change but not the impact to the heart that this music brings.

  • Breathtaking! *o*

  • That's a truly party , elegance and beautiful dance moves cheek to cheek love it"!

  • Hi #UN#,

I liked your video and I'm watching all the videos about dance so I can to learn to dance like the pros.

    Thanks for yours,

    JP

  • Fred couldn't sing but the song is beautiful

  • Awesome dancing and music.Ty Candy and Jim Beattie for posting.

  • For all you people who don't know what the green mile is i really think you should see it , it a great film i always cry in the end and this movie clip is in it

  • John Coffee :'(

  • zac efron and that gabriela don´t come near them!

  • This was before my time, and place, but their performance that relates words you can understand, and melody that you will never forget, not to mention the dancing. They will live forever in our hearts. How much more can we say.

  • This is "tenderness" at his highest and purest terms... <3

  • Thank God for Youtube. Where else you gonna see this material?

  • i've seen this movie clip from the note book :D not in green mile :D

  • Actually the film was called "Bowler Hat" and the music was by Mervyn Berlin, you may also like to check out "Swing Tune", "Roberto" and "Flying up to Peru" all fantastic vehicles for Fred and Gingers magic, their like will never come again

  • @andyguitar99 I saw "Flying up to Peru" just recently on Turner Classics. The aerial scenes over Machu Picchu are quite amazing.

  • Would anyone happen to know the name of the black and white movie thats shown in Reign Over Me? Ive been looking and looking and cant find it. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thanks

  • omg, i want to dance like them! their dancing is so light and beautiful!

  • Now-a-days people think dancing like this is outdated..not used anymore.. I would love to be born in the time period of this and do as these people do,dance gracefully.

  • I have to say - that dress is pretty distracting - in a good way, of course.

  • I first heard this song on the Muppet Show between Miss Piggy and Danny Kaye. I must say, this version is much better!

  • @actuary33

I'm sure that many people really do appreciate the music and the dancers.

It's impolite to call people morons - perhaps you may wish to withdraw that remark.

  • @actuary33 What the hell is Green Mile?

  • @actuary33 I've never seen Green Mile LOL

  • @locon623 its a great tom hanks movie, most of these clowns see it on that movie but never watch it in context. This movie is called ToP Hat

  • @actuary33 Maybe your one of those clowns since your the one who,s mention it ??? Maybe your mad at yourself of never seen it BEFORE green mile ;-) mirror mirror on the wall;-)

  • @actuary33 It,s also possible people who never seen it get curious(right word?) and go search for it and become fans, happens all the time with older songs too

  • @8501069255 you can get the movie on netflix or any video store. Its called Top Hat and I love old movies with him in it. check it out

  • Comment removed

  • @8501069255 I'm my early 20s too...

Yeah its definatey on dvd and netflix.com. Also, it comes on pretty frequently on the Turner Classic Movie channel c:

  • @actuary33 Whats the green mile?

  • @JunkTheGreat a movie based on the stephen king novels with the lead actor tom hanks. its a classic film

  • @actuary33 surely the important thing is that people find this, no matter the source!? Even if it comes from a (very well made and moving) film, the important thing is people are discovering the wonder and beauty of the time. That is the way to keep it alive forever. Who cares where they first heard it, as long as they heard it and were interested enough to look for it on youtube?!

  • @actuary33

isn't it impossible that people saw it on the green mile (i didn't) and still appreciate the music ?

i mean you don't have to be a dick about it

  • @actuary33

does it matter how people learned of its existence?

the fact still remains that people enjoy and appreciate it.

who are you to tell me what someone else is thinking?

  • Those who press the dislike button are promoting hell since this song has the word heaven

  • 24 people need their eyes checked..

  • coffey :D

  • there like angels!!

  • I wish I were Ginger Rogers i this scene....

  • @dianaberry9393 Same here. his scene, night and day, and the finale in swingtime are my other favorites I wish I was/could be her in! She was so so pretty and plus, I've always had a little crush on Fred Astaire...

  • Thank you for posting this clip It makes me want to dance with Fred. Oh so romantic. A true classic with eligant dancing

  • La classe!

  • loving it when music was music

  • I wish people actually still danced like this. I'm a teenager, and I hate what we call "dancing" now.

  • @SavageGenius135 I agree with you.

  • This is classic, nostalgic and an immortal scene...and dancers... this is what made entertainment. I agree with zsra187, how can anyone dislike this, and if so why even click, just stop...everyone just wants to be a part I guess. "Dancing cheek to cheek" is still a line used today...not in film so much but when anyone dances. It's romance. Too bad people have crappy opinions.

  • Nice!!! I really Like Broadway Songs!!! =^_^=

  • 5:35 thru 5:55.... Oh oh my gosh!!!

  • love it!!!!!

  • I would give anything to get to go back in time, get all dolled up and dance in those parties!

  • Her dress looks soft. I want to wear one like that.

  • *sigh* i was born about 70 years too late! frankly, being 15 in 2010 is just LOUSY!! this, let alone the thousands of other classic movie moments, makes me yearn for another day and age when class and simplicity were actually relevant! plus, ya' gotta LOVE fred & ginger ;)

  • @KrystaK88 I know how you feel. I'm 56 and I wish that this music was current. Thankfully, it will never go out of style.

  • ginger glides just like a swan....! gosh if only people still danced like this instead of rubbing up on each other like dogs....this was true dancing.! i wish i was born back then...

  • i love the elegance and class of the 30's and 40's. my brother luaghs at me cuz' i don't like nowdays music. i like 40's-80's music. especially frank sinatra, sami davis jr,stevie wonder, michael jackson, the beatles an queen. i like every kind of really great music and great-talented people.

  • i watched this film for the first time in the early 2000s in a college film appreciation class-and i was swept away.

    fred, gene, ginger.

    never another trio like them.

i prefer gene kelley personally, but fred is magnificent. :)

  • This video brings me to the conclusion that more guys should be able to dance like this.

    Seriously.

It would be so refreshing to be taken by the hand and not the derriere, like in some crummy music video of today.

  • @lippy88lizzy I know. I wish they would not only be able to dance, but obtain manners.

  • Interesting how, when times for most people were so hard, the films and music were so elegant and beautiful. Now, when so many people have so much, it is all about violence and sex. What a pity we can't seem to get that beauty back.

  • @hawkmoon03111951You made a great point. Ingmar Bergman once said -- "Never blame the fate for the time in which you live because you were born to make it better." Well it seems that while 30's and 40's were probably some of the most terrible decades in history for the entire world, there were so many people who did everything to make their time better and thanks to them we forever will feel nostalgic for it. Indeed Art can have a great impact on history!

  • That dance scene could not be replicated today. Stars today don't have the talent and charisma of yesteryear.

    Wylie Kyote

  • wow its made me cry

  • God Fred Astaire is amazing. Hard to believe when he went to an acting agent they told him "You can't sing, you can't act, and you can dance alright." Later did they know his legs were insured for one million dollars.

  • Modern ballroom dancing competitions just look boring after this. Plus, for some reason, the guys are now wearing these extra long tails and look stupid. Ladies' dresses are also pretty silly too. Fred Astaire's tails were of the best design, as well as Ginger's dresses. Just copy them and you'll look wonderful!

  • @turetskygambit ...You make an interesting comment here. I think that modern ballroom...as opposed to the often vulgar TV competitions...looks stilted, stiff, and very, very formal. They look like automatons on the dance floor. If you watch Fred and Ginger in this dance, they seem so natural and continuously flowing. Dare I say graceful? Fred's choreography is never ideological. In fact, at one point, they even break into a short tap routine. And always, they dance, and look, so well TOGETHER.

  • wow. speechless, just speechless.

  • "They's angels... just like in Heav'n."

  • As far as grace an beauty is concerned, this is one of their greatest.... "Let's Face the Music and Dance" is also over the top elegant, and emotionally even more powerful...."The Waltz in Swing Time" is a joyful expression of young love, full of mutual support and generosity, and great choreography....and, "Never Gonna Dance", is their great poignant dance of parting, perhaps the high point of their art. These dances are ALL at a very highest levels of artistry and expression. Timeless really.

  • @followthefleet1 You are totally right, and quite eloquent at making a very informed comment. If I had to select one number from their movies together as a favorite it would either be "Never Gonna Dance" or "Pick Yourself Up". Art is good, but when Fred trips over his own two feet, he becomes one of us.

  • @errolfan ..I bet Fred had to work hard to look clumsy! Roger Ebert once wrote that F&G's dancing is a victory for the entire human race over clumsiness and mis-coordination.

  • @followthefleet1 to join the conversation about favorite dances... I love "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" as the epitome of simple elegance. Fred said in his book that it was one of his favorites...maybe because Ginger's dress was so simple and unencumbering too! ;)

  • @apple2dance04 yes, "smoke gets in your eyes" is sooo wonderfully elegant. solid gold. i heard from somewhere (can't remember where. eep) that fred was very annoyed about the dress ginger wore in this "cheek to cheek" scene. apparently, the feathers got in the way all the time, and also made a mess of fred's tails. at any rate, only this dress would have been right for this scene *lol*

  • The Greatest Dance Duo of All Time~ They just don't make them like that anymore...

  • music reminds me of the film GREEN MILE

  • Just love this artistic piece full of elegancy

  • dont remember what class it was that i saw this in, but i LOVE this, and ginger rogers is SO darling and adorable.

  • I love the color! If I had this in Final Cut, I would darken the blacks and push the highlights just a little.

  • Fred and Ginger never looked more elegant and relaxed. Even though Ginger's outfit was waiting to be a...sorry... I have to... clear my sinuses... aah... that's better. Anyways, her outfit was waiting to be a scene stealer. Achoo!

  • 5:55 A man laments over a fatally wounded fur coat.

  • Beautiful simply does not do this classic justice. It is the living embodiment of classical eloquence and shakespearian love. Timeless, simply timless.

  • wow..quality is so good..

  • just the best ---- thanks for posting

  • This music is heaven.....

  • ....."John Coffey, Señora; como la bebida.......pero no se escribe igual".....

  • good voice by fred astaire, but not as good as mr. sinatra's...

anyway, it is kind of a sad song because of its appearance in the green mile...

  • i am only 14 and i love Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire. Also i love Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor,Sammy Davis Jr, and Frank Sinatra

  • I love this!! its so beautiful! =)

  • If I could choose my favorite way of dancing, it would be doing it cheek to cheek. That's how old fashioned I am.

  • Absolute Heaven! Completely magical and the music plus the dancing make an experience never to be forgotten. Dear Fred and Ginger (and Irving) a million thanks for all your artistry and hours of hard work!

  • This was the real golden age of cinema. I would give everything to dance one of this songs in a party night instead of the horrible music of now a days (with the exception of a very few)

I'm just fifteen years old, yet I found this one of the most romantic things I have ever seen.

Yes, I like movies that involve a lot of action scenes or going to concerts of bands like AC/DC or Muse, but there will never be something more inspiring than the old fashioned movies =)

  • I'm in heaven watching this.

  • Sb4Sb

  • thank you for uploading this!! <3

  • "I ain't never seen me a flicker show."

  • This song is so romantic.

  • Oh my god... Astounding, I'm just crying here.

  • my gran sings this and dances along to it....

  • I just had to memorize the song after watching this. Very well worth it. The scene overwhelms me with positive emotion.

  • Who comes on to this video and presses the dislike button? Really?! I mean.....REALLY?!!?!?!?!?!

  • @zsra187

I think they have clicked on the 'dislike' icon by mistake, easily done.

Ask Youtube to make the choice clearer, by placing the icons further apart.

  • @zsra187 Those that do not realize great old time music :) Music my grandparents listened to :)

  • @zsra187 I pressed "I like it" and, seeing 24 dislikes, I thought exactly the same!!!! WHO?!?!?! WHY?!?!?! O.o!!!

  • john coffe saw this movie (:

  • Suave, charming, elegant and magnificent. The unequaled effervescence of Fred and Ginger is immortal.

  • I just love this movie and the song and dance! Both are timeless classics!!!

  • "Why, they's angels. Angels, just like up in heaven."

  • Comment removed

  • Fantastic in every way. What chemistry and what a connection! Best male dancer ever.

  • Why can't it really be like that?

  • This is one of the classics! Love ya Ginger Rogers!

  • My name is John Coffee! :'-(

  • @D13m3R from the green mile ...... greets from germany.....

  • @Sauerland39 Greetz zurück! Ich bin Deutscher, komme aus Byaern! :)

  • @D13m3R like the drink, just not spelt the same.

  • @D13m3R Why they's Angels. Angels just like in Heaven.

  • @D13m3R

like the drink only not spelled the same.

  • @D13m3R john coffey!! xD

  • not only do I like this clip, but I like the description. You couldn't have said it any better. What the world is now is a shame, a sad, passionless shame.

  • @CLCxProductions

I was about to write the same thing. Couldn't agree more.

  • so wunderschön...

  • I wish that Fred Astaire still lived

  • 4'37" so magic..
